Title: budget busa build
Post by: hawkwind on July 25, 2006, 06:38:27 AM
Follow the sad tales of a wannabe bike builder ,as he attempts to chase the' big boys toys'
the author /builder practices the time honored  minimalist approach ,minimum ,money, time ,talent, tools  and everything ,so sit back and have a good laugh at ,project "no bling on this thing"
see ya on the salt sometime

The author attempts for the first time to rake a hitech jap frame ,why cause the pro frame builders want my first born as part payment , so armed with gross ignorance ,a hacksaw ,gas axe and some hinges ,presto 10* raked busa frame

jump forward a couple of months , very busy ,mostly scrounging up those elusive  $$, but fortunatly ,project no bling on this thing is slowly taking shape ,the plan is to have it ready for Gairdner in 07 and then if all goes well ,join the Aussie asalt to. Bonneville 08.
a snippet on the project ,1350 APS/BF  ,turbo /nitrous with a twist of somethins a little different ,my main thrust has been to minimise the frontal area ,which needed a rethink on the whole layout , I have successeded in lowering aprox 100mm  ( 4 ") by changing the frame ,and sub frame geometry ,raking and altering the suspension ,as well as increasing the wheel base ,now at 78" ,at the rear I have fabricated a lengthened chrome molly underbraced swingarm ,attached to the swingarm are the mounts for the lead ballast and fitted inbetween the swingarm the coolant for the air/water intercooler , altered the subframe to accept a new fuel tank (holds 16ltrs alky) and room for the 5lb nitrous bottle ,both of which fit under the tail section

Great work Gary.  I like the way you have re-worked the swing arm.

I keep thinking I don't have much room on my car.  After looking at how you guys have to package everything on your bikes I'll have to quit my whining 8) .

Sure hope you can make it over here in '08 and hopefully I might be over there next year or the following if I can figure out how to make that happen :D .

on the rear subframe, how far back did you bring the seat with those brackets? are you fabbing a long aluminum seat to fill the gap to the fuel tank? what are you running in the two tanks? how much balast do you think you can support on the 4 mouting points total?

great fab by the way. looks excellent. forward thinking....we ll, actually rearward thinking. :D

Thanks for the feed back blokes  :D as the title suggests ,my main aim is to try and encourage other "backyard builders" on low budgets to get out there and have a go ,Im using this build to show that it can be achieved ,on very little compaired to the big budget boys ,
Sum ,yes working out where and how ,to best locate everything is a real challenge
bbb, can add up to 100kg  lead ballast .top  tank (methanol),my design allows fuel from the bottom  via 1/2 " line  and return fron the regs at the top ,hopefully the narrow section will act as a type of surge tank in the  top section, the bottom tank (between the swing arm ) will hold chilled water for the air/water intercooler  holds aprox 10 ltrs  and another 5 in the lines and intercooler ,uses a bilge pump inside the tank

the nitrous system , is self contained with its own fuel tank , pump and regulator ,it will run C16 or similar  ,has two purposes ,firstly I have 2 turbo's (great buys on ebay  )  a t61 and a t70 its there to spool up the big one  and secondly for a little extra top end mumbo, nice and compact

Great looking work. Just curious, isnt that small cooler going to get packed with salt pretty quickly hanging down that low with it coming off the front tire?

Hawkwind, some might be interested in what you have spent doing it as you say

the author /builder practices the time honored minimalist approach ,minimum ,money, time ,talent, tools and everything

also how did the lower bearing machined recess end up after the welding around it??? ie did you check for distortion? outa round

The typical year for Australia, doesn't pick up any salt that will pack...

Their salt is very hard and almost like running on pavement...

Unless you are an American contigent that goes over with like, lets say 4 motorcycles, then it will rain and get salt pack...

Thanks, I thought it was like Bville salt and it looked to me like it would just pack solid with salt off the front wheel by the time it was to the timing traps

The last 3-4 years the salt at b'ville even off course has been really hard even off course.  I remember when if you got off any of the roads you could fill up your whole fender in a very short distance.

Gazza ,bearing race /cone went in no probs , and it turns smoothly without any resistance , I did not measure before or after ,as for the cost , its all relative ,which ever way you look at it speed costs , and anything that one can do to  keep that cost to a minimum is a bonus , infact thats the only way some can do it,anyone who has some basic skills and a good hobbyist tool kit and is prepaired to have a go can save a motza and get a heap of satisifaction to boot
, I base this against those ,fortunate enough who only need to "write big cheques " for billet and bling everything ,or the lucky ppl who have a sponser or two to sholder the burden ,as to what it has cost to date ,way to much but many 1000's  less than having someone else do it all

Well I have been very busy since the last post , turned my hand to designing and making a complete new set of bodywork , the pics below show it all loosley fitted so I can mark out the final paint designs and finish the paint , it all fits reasonably well ,most of the parts are fiberglass ,each one made as a one off ,I have added the base colour (metalflake silver ) and its rubbed back ready for the final colours , the tank is a dummy and covers the inlectors and plenum and other stuff , It would be interesting to see how aerodynamic or not it is ,anyway back to the shed as I have lots more to make before its complete and March is just around the corner

Very Nice Gary. I hereby knight you into the royal order of OBRT. (Owner, builder, rider, tuner). Very few do it all. Big numbers are sure to follow. Hopefully a sponsor will appreciate your dedication. After 30 years I am still looking for someone to sponsor the tail wind.    Best of luck this March.  Larry

I was fortunate enough to see a liner get a tail wind both ways in time for
 a 2 hour turn around.
Sadly he was not up to record speed yet but it was great planning.
Finally they did it with no wind, no spare parts, or enough fuel for
 another run.
When he did set a record it stood for 16 years.

Thanks all for your kind words ,most appreciated  :-D

Im a happy chappy ,I have just secured my first sponser , Thunder composites racing, Glen the owner and member of the Australian hayabusa club ,kindly donated some fantastic decals for the budget busa build , the pics below dont do justice to the details of his work which is world class ,I sent him some designs and ideas of what I wanted and he matched it all up to the finished paint job (metalflake silver /candy apple red )

Seasons greetings, and a prosperous new year.
I have a little question. Do you need to get the mag wheels Tested before you race?
and what tyres are you running.

ECU is in and after some fighting with  great and small gremlins IT fired up and ran sort of , I have a date with the dyno next W/E  ,yes cutting it very close , if all goes well, load it on the trailer and go and see what it can do DLRA speed week in 14 days and counting

Inexpensive to get the marriage started but then the costs go up the same as everyone elses.
Then it rains on the lakebed.

just a small update , dyno tuned just before DLRA speed week , some major issues with the ECU ,it was not a happy chappy ,would only run up to 8K rpm then crap out ,these runs were only at the 12pound spring on the wastegate ,some progress has been made with the ECU and hopefully it will be ok for next March , budget and motec m800 do not compute so I will persist with the microtec .

What ever happened with the ignition magnet strength problem ?
Title: Re: budget busa build
Post by: hawkwind on June 02, 2007, 07:42:13 PM
Jack , magnet was fine ,problem is with the ECU ,I have supplied the designer of the unit with firing events both crank trigger degrees and cam trigger degrees I used a degree wheel and timed events off # 4 pot ,they are different to what is programmed into the ECU ,as I write this the ecu is being reprogrammed and hopefully ,I can do some more dyno runs to see if the problem is corrected , I have installed an upgraded stator (greater output ) and modified rect/reg unit  as the OEM could not hack the amount of extra current devices I have installed and the front forks are being modified to my specs .I want to have this bike sorted before world of speed 08 planing on attending God willing ,oh and another suprise bike .
