OK
For real now;

After my last track day in May 2013 I came to realise that those days are over. Old age, slow reactions, poor eyesight, etc., etc. I sucked at it anyhow. Sold the 2nd to last Ducati (they will bury me with my beautiful 1996 Ducati 900 SS/SP) and, since we had already planned a road trip to Speed Week anyhow, decided to jump in with both feet. (see my motto at the bottom of each post)

I started with this 1993 Honda RS125 factory GP bike. Tip: never buy a fully functional motorcycle with the intent of building an APS bike because half of it won't be there when you're done. BTW, If you know anyone searching for a whole bunch of used RS125 parts please let me know.

All true.

I guess you might get away with eroded reactions in a race car but on a bike not so much.

I have the biggest respect for bike racers no matter what level they compete at.

You've done a fine job on your project and I hope you have a great time with it.

Mike.

Pete

I've had Microsoft XP for years and I've been going to Bonneville for years.  Never got any support from Microsoft.  So I don't think it will be missed.

My apologies for all these links but they are all from the "Dropbox" app.  Pretty cool but I understand that there's no actual picture stored somewhere - just some links floating around in the "cloud"

So I started with this.......

https://www.dropbox.com/sc/vaokisjrf6bj1d6/YYIRFui9pJ

Added 7" to the swingarm (wish I'd added more).........

https://www.dropbox.com/sc/2ou5dykl11tul0u/VPYhL8jOdg

Replaced the seat subframe to make it lower and narrower so I could get my knees together. Added the adjustable front fairing stay tube. It can slide forward and back. Since the fairing nose slants back I was able to adjust the finished nose height by sliding that tube in and out.

Glassed up a front fender but eventually decided against using it.

The first of about 60 tapered, thin plywood sticks over ribs. Using strips 1" wide at one end and 1/4" wide at the other allowed more bending at the front end and I got a naturally aerodynamic shape. I didn't use enough ribs, though (which I paid for later)

Strips on and being covered with masking tape. The start of a very steep leaning curve!

View from the storage loft. I used a 1:7 width to length ratio. Full length it would have been well over 10". Chopped off at 9 1/2" behind the tire, it's 95".

Glassing begins. Another big learning experience. I've a done lot of fiberglass boat repairs but making a body from scatch around a motorcycle was a whole different deal!!

https://www.dropbox.com/sc/m3fe6mfvkyeu67i/yXVwCgZndC

It looked great until I color sanded.  UGH!. The start of 2 months of pain! Seatback is in and chestbed (I just made that word up) is laid over the gastank.

After rough cutting the tail from the rest of the body, I began fitting it to me.

Looking over the gas tank I made from a length of 2x6 alum. square tube at the APS tail.

View of the front end. I overworked a lot of brain cells thinking this up!
I rented a bunch of those big carpet drying fans and jerry-rigged a wind tunnel. I was really pleased with the results. All my little tufts of yarn attached to the body went straight back. Only the salt will really confirm the slipperyness.

That T shaped bar on the ground is my best invention ever. The handlebars are way down inside at mid thigh height so it's near impossible to push the bike around. That T bar slips down into the triple tree tube making an extra set of easily removable handle bars at chest height. Plus I can attach straps to it without them touching the body.  Me likey!

Let the discussion about the tail section begin! (I'll explain my theory later)

At present, we are working on the motor. Have I mentioned this is the 100cc class? Using a modified Kawasaki KX100 dirtbike motor. I had a 2stroke "guru" sit on my motor and blow smoke up my a** for 6 months and never even started on it! I've run out of bad words for this guy. Now I've found a reputable builder with an in-house dyno who's closer to me but we're getting a late start.

I'll second that!

The only question I have is have you tried the fit wearing a helmet and leathers. They tend to restrict how tight you can tuck yourself.

That bike's MY size. :-D

Pete, if he's too bulky he could always get "Freudian". :-o

I must commend you on the work you've done.

That is just awesome.
What you went through on the glass work is enough.

Yes but I don't have pics. I took these pics with my tablet taped to a piece of plywood leaning against the wall. It's only got a 10 second timer. With my leathers on, I cant click the shutter and jump on and get into position that fast.   :-D

Trying to help with photos.

Can You guys see these? Bike is really cool.

Now that's some magic right there!
Thank you.
I'm OK with a wrench but this tech stuff is beyond me.
How did you do it?

Don't throw that fender away. I can see where once you've run and found how fast you can go without it you may decide to explore the further limits with it. It looks smoooooth.  :-D :-D :-D

Too late. I tripped over it for the last time about a month ago. I am toying with another fender idea, though.

The bike looks awesome. Tell us a little more about the body building process. I see you laid a lot of lengthwise strips but what did you fill them in with to get to the point of laying fiberglass? I hand built my own body too using foam sheets but it was a looooong process and I know there have to be easier ways.

Hey Sofa
I was going to say that you have the wrong engine in the bike--- I read a little more and realised it is the Kawasaki.
Fabulous job on the body-- pity you had to cut it to suite the class regs.
Why don't you use the Honda engine, or is that the next step.
I ran my rs125 a couple of years back and went 125. I'm 6'1" and can't tuck very well on such a small bike.
This year my son went 105 on his APS-100 bike-- yz80 engine ( on our gps track in Aus and 99.7 for the record)
Will you be racing this year?   I'll be at BUB and WoS   maybe with my A frame bussa
cheers    Bones

Been a while.
Thanks for posting those pics, MTA.

Lots of progress has been made. Cooling tank plumbing is done. Electrical done. Brakes done (I've got a front master cylinder from an '09 GSXR750 hooked to the original RS125 rear disc - can we say "overkill"?). I'm in the process of re-doing the APS tail. I never did like it and it was too heavy.  Made up some nice, adjustable steering stops. Remounted the motor. Lots of little things taken care of.

And, I've finally come up with a simple mechanism to start the bike with the fairing on!

My ported cylinder has been sent for Nikasil and I should have the motor in about 2 weeks. Then a custom pipe build and dyno testing.

The goal is 120+.

I've been too busy to keep up with this - 50 different reasons why.
I'd like to thank those who offered help with the pics. I hope I can thank you all in person in a few weeks.

Well, the bike's been in Gresham, Oregon for three weeks. Arlen Lehman at LED Performance has been doing all the 2stroke mods (you know, dipping parts in toad blood, swinging chickens around, stirring cauldrons, incantations and all that other voodo/ black magic crap that 2stroke guys do) and the results sound pretty good. After multiple heat cycles and a problem with the fuel supply he called and said it ran past 120mph no problem. I know that only the salt will tell and there will be lot's more tuning and jet changing yet to come, but after hundreds of nights in the garage, it's sure encouraging. At least my gear ratios are about right. If not, I've managed to track down a whole stack of sprockets.

I'm planning to run at one of the "test & tune" sessions at the local drag strip at the end of the month. I've owned a lot of bikes but this is the first one that I've felt I need to learn to ride. The power band is high and the CCs are low so launching is going to take some experimenting.

Only a few hundred things left to do.

Good to hear you're getting there.
You're right about the voodoo on 2 strokes but you have to love them. I do.
It's premature but I wish you all the luck for the upcoming events.
Have a good one. I love the bike.
