I wish I could have seen it run - I was preoccupied with the Midget, and didn't get a chance to peek under the hood, but I did see it in impound.
You know - I miss Plymouths . . .
-
And, it's a very good looking car. Especially sitting in impound!
-
I agree, it did look really sweet sitting in impound twice.
Sid.
-
Talked to him in impound, its a 170 slant 6
-
132.850 in an flying fish with a leaning sixer.
Somewhere, there is an engine builder I want to have a long conversation with.
-
I'm thinking the passengers foot well in a racing Midget is expendable and might allow room for a slant six. :-D
-
I saw it run a couple of times.
It just ran and ran.
Real nice car, real nice people.
-
Slant 6's are a tough old hunk of iron & hard to kill, I still one in one of my Challenger's. :-)
Sid.

Yeah, the slant sixes are known to be "tough", but where did he find all that power in an F-class 170? 132.85 MPH- I remember those sort of numbers in B and C Classis Production just a few years ago.

Is there any chance we could see the power plant? Nice car by the way!!!

Not a pic but here is the engine information BobDcuda posted in the Aero Section - How much rake on a door slammer? thread:
Sid, I've got the 170 ci slant bored out to a whopping 174 ci. Got the usual cam, carb, headers, valves, etc., and some extensive head work. Combustion chambers were welded in to get 30cc chambers, milling and porting, 13:1 compression. Engine dyno made 252 hp @ 6,800. Final bit is to get the nose down and aligned. I hope to go fast, but do want the wheels to stay on the ground. :-D

Extensive head work. Yep, sounds like the magic is in the head.

He was running by me a few times over on the short course. I'm not sure what upset me more, not getting a record, or that an old Cuda with a 6, went faster than my v-twin, push-rod, 650 turbo! I always loved those early Cudas, just great styling, kind of an updated Studebaker look.
-
Some time ago there was a slant six made to stand up straight, in a Stude running in F/FC as I remember. What I liked about it besides the car and engine, was the exhaust pipe injection. No throttles. Pedal just controlled the metering block. He told me it ran fine except when it caught fire.
-
Must have been left over from the Team Fercockta F(?)/Fuel Roadster that ran at El Mirage in the 70s. Held the record for quite a few years, I believe. No butterflies, either.
-
Here's another photo that didn't make it thru . . .
-
I remember the name. May have been 70s or early 80s. Ran good.
-
ratpatrol66 - here's a pic of my 'leaning tower of power'. Sorry it took me so long, I've been trying to figure out how to shrink my photo enough for it to post here.
It's all pretty simple in there. Note the old school 'cool can' mounted on the RH fender well.
Yes, the magic to this build does seem to be in the head. Unfortunately, that's what broke and sent us home early. (Excessive porting found the water jacket.) A new head, an exact duplicate, is already under construction; hope it runs as well as the original.
Back at it next Speed Week. Thanks all for your interest in my little 'cuda - it's been a lot of fun!

Boy I like nice, clean, simple cars and this one exemplifies what I like.

Clean, clean, clean. Doesn't suprise me after looking at the rest of the car. Very well done Bob!
-
Nah... unblown 170 c.i. can't possibly push it that fast. Must be some sort of forced-induction device hidden in that monstrous intake air ducting...
-
When I looked at it isn't that a Holley type 2 barrel on there too ? Looks like something yould run in a limited Nascar 2 barrel class. { a high CFM type}Sorry if I made anyone feel worse
-
I saw it at SW in the lanes and it sure was a clean looking car. Shouldve went back to the pits to check it out now that ive seen the pic with the hood open. Looks ready for a Saturday night car show. Very nice :-)
-
Nice looking engine, heck the whole cars looks great.
