BJ Burkdoll just called and told me that WoS has been cancelled for 2013.
Check the USFRA website for further details.
-
USFRA website doesn't say anything about a cancellation.

Confirmed

It may take 'em a while to get the website updated to show the cancellation.

The word is getting out. It's a real bummer after all of the prep to make the event happen,
-
I think Rob gets the "long tow" disappointment award.
Treit's car just rolled out of the trailer back into the shop.
Steve M, Rampage, get's the travel time trophy.
Sure hurts when Mother Nature takes over.
I hope the Shoot Out survives.
I know we won't be there.

Anybody have picture of the conditions?

I just talked with Mike Cook - about WoS and his event. He says he had just talked with USFRA and they told him about the decision to cancel. He offered them some of the days he's got the salt - if they wanted to just postpone for a day or two, but no - the event is cancelled.
Mike leaves SoCal this coming Sunday early early -- heading for Wendover. He'll check out the situation and will make his decision based on what he sees then. but until that -- the Top Speed Shootout is still "on". Stay tuned for updates.
-
USFRA web page has been updated as of 10:22 to confirm the cancellation as does their face book page.
-
USFRA is doing a bang-up job of notifying people of the unfortunate fact of their cancellation. I got an email a few minutes ago, it's on their site and their FB page, Mike Cook got a call, etc.
It's sad -- but the USFRA folks are doing their level best to let us all know asap.
-
Man that is tough.
It makes Freud's reference more important than ever, that you only have so many Speedweeks, WOS and World Finals in one life...so attend them all.
I hope to be in a position to attend them all for how many I have left in me.
Safe travels home to all that are turning around and heading home.

Real bummer for those headed that way. If any body needs a cold beer, hot meal, or would like to swing by and check out Hank, pm me.
Hope the weather holds out for World Finals.

Mother Nature always has her way. Water in particular always wins.
Growing up a mile or so from the Mississippi River in St Louis taught me that a long time ago.

The USFRA as a well run organization, I very sorry for their loss on this race, I know it takes a lot of hrs of manpower to organize and conduct a race of this type, I want to thank them for all their hard work and dedication. Dave

Are the Corvina biting?
Hey! For those of you that are ancient enough, (ahem, Freud.) how long will this take to dry out, given the weather forecast?
-
Remeber folks we only have 3 shots at the salt per year, our four if you can do the Cook Shootout, if you can only participate in one a year you just lost that year :-(
If your lucky enough to live near Southern Cal ELMO is a great option and increases your chances to go fast by leaps and bounds. :-)
-
Dean......Mike will tell us on Monday.

Looks like wendover is getting a bit more rain right now 9/4/13 17:31, they also have a thunderstorm warning up for the area south of the highway and storms are tracking north north east.

Sorry for all the people not being able to run or go.

Well we are home. We left at 7 this morning, got 300 miles and Texican got hold of me to tell me the meet was cancelled. Thanks Jim We will try for World Finals.

Here I sit in Jackson Hole, WY and just read the news about WoS.
I should be very pissed off but I can say I am only disappointed.....We cannot control Mother Nature.
Lynda and I have traveled about 2500 miles so far and have seen many wondrous sights in this beautiful country!
We will be leaving for NC in the morning and I expect that we will see many more sights on the way home!
The webcast we had planned will definitely happen next year!
Chris,
If it's OK, I'll take the equipment home with me and bring it to Wilmington next April!
I'll also get a tower computer and get it all hooked up.
Gregg
Currently in Jackson Hole, WY on our way back to NC!

Well, ya'll sure know how to "Fly low" on those hwys where the speed limit is just a joke for the locals.
Glad you folks are OK.
Hope to see you at WF.
Maybe a cool one at Carmen's?
Jim

Thanks for double checking when we had to cancel. Gary and I will be at the end of the road having a rain sale on tshirts and hats and stuff. I have a real good supply, groan! Come out and visit. Ellen
-
What a bummer. I have to agree with all the comments about how many events we each may have left. When we were about ready to leave Wendover after having issues at SpeedWeek, a fella said, "Hey, there's always next year!" I looked around at all the grey hair and remembered all the rained out events and thought, well, no... maybe there isn't always next year. Grab while the grabbin is good!
Best wishes to everyone who was all prepared to run and hopefully you can make the next event even more prepared (and hungry!)
-
... We will try for World Finals....
Fred there will be a couple people here at the house Friday/Saturday and we plan on driving up on Sunday for World Finals. Come by it you get a chance,

Hey save me an event T-shirt (or four) okay? I was REALLY hoping to do a major wardrobe adjustment at WOS (different color hat... first time my car on an event poster/T-shirt, etc.), but.......
Oh well let's hope there is still a Shoe Tout. The pics on the USFRA home page don't look too encouraging though. But I got fingers, toes and eyes crossed... hoping.
Freud, would it be too much to ask for you to head on out to the salt and wander up and down the course for a few days talking to yourself? Might help speed the drying process along some ya' know. I'll even promise to buy your beer if you promise to return it only to the Porta Potties.
-
Bloody English weather!!
-
honda_jim......I probably walk too slow.
I'd be there if I had any influence.
This time Target 550 is hurting also.
We need to get that piece out on her own.
The loss of events is critical to us.
So long in the headlines and now it sits and waits like everyone else.
It's tough to keep ones chin up.

I was in Colorado when I get the call. Had to drop off a machine and then the plan was to head to Wendover. Cut out that part of my trip and headed to So. Cal. to drop off a car. Then back home to TN.
I was looking forward to being on the Salt, but I'll have to wait until next year now.
-
Freud, do you think it can be at world finals?
-
Bloody English weather!!
Actually, if we were in Great Britain this week, we'd be more concerned about the tides -

Arrived back home yesterday afternoon. It was a bitter disappointment for us to make the call to cancel the
race. Sunday the 1st the salt was drying well and I had planned on starting to drag early Monday morning.
The plan was to drag new lanes adjacent to track 1 but on the pit side. The salt there was void of the ruts
that were in the current track. A storm came through Sunday night and flooded the lake bed. By Tuesday it was drying nicely but then another storm hit midday. Then to top things off another one came through Tuesday night about 9:30 pm. It was just too much water and we did not feel we would have sufficent time
to provide a safe and fast track.
We will be looking at the expenses already incurred and let those pre entered know how much we can refund or the option of rolling over the amount toward next years entry.
Monte.

I'll have to attend the board meeting before I can comment on World Finals.

Spectators won't appreciate the decision to cancel but anyone who wants to drive on a safe track will be pleased. The final decision on a go-no go is the quality of the course. The decision to cancel is like telling racers there won't be a Christmas this year. It takes serious evaluation and I commend Jim and Monte for the guts to call it off. This is a slap in the face because Utah has had the hottest summer on record and one of the driest so a rain out was one of the last things we thought would happen. Now we get to worry about snowpack and water next summer.
-
Wes the integrity of USFRA does not waver.
Racers should respect your decisions because their safety is the basis of your decisions.
No one wants to cancel the event. Weather has dealt USFRA costly situations more than once
and you always come back swinging.
Thanks for being there.
After missing Speed Week the Target 550 team was ready to do our initial runs at your meet.
No hesitation.

We all know it was a tough choice. I respect you for your thoughts on safety AND quality of racing.

Wow, that sucks. Obviously the right call...I just feel bad for the folks who've been waiting and preparing and driving... :-(
