Title: Best driving route from Los Angeles to Speedweek
Post by: metermatch on August 07, 2013, 01:02:58 AM
What is the best driving route from Los Angeles to Speedweek?  My computer is showing a number of paths, and one is on a road that goes through Ely, NV, which is in the middle of nowhere.

The other goes through Las Vegas, but longer.

Any preferences?

Thanks,

Jeff

Follow the advice given to you by something wiser.
Just get gas well ahead of time, or carry a back-up jug.
It is a good 2 lane road wit an occasional passing lane on uphill stretches.
Obey the posted limits, or stay within no more than 5 over.
Plenty of good spots for "Johnny" to fall out of a tree.

With the price of gas, I'll take the shortest route, every trip of the train.

Do you use gasbuddy. (http://gasbuddy.)com?

stay safe,
Jim

Our route is from Las Vegas to SLC then heading back we're going via Ely.  It's middle of nowhere, but we do get to drive the ET Highway which has been something on my bucket list for years now.  Gas stations seem sparse so Ill be topping up at every opportunity.

When I lived down there, my preferred drive was up the Sierra Highway to Bishop, Tonopah, Ely and Wendover. Wayno

Are looking for the quickest route? or looking for a cruse with very little traffic and a hint of uncertainty?

Quickest= 15N to 93n to 318n to 6n (ELY) to 93n to wendover. this route can save you about a hour if traffic thru vegas is light(late at night)

My prefered route.
15n to 127n (BAKER) turns into 373, 95n to 6n (TONOPAH) to 93n (ELY). 120+ miles of no service between TONOPAH and ELY. Little to know traffic with this route. Just make sure you gas up in Tonopah have some extra water and slow down on the mountain passes. alot of big truck take this route and take up both lanes sometimes.

What ever you do don't take 395 north.

The 93 - 318 is the shortest.  And if you want to stay in Ely overnight, the Hotel Nevada is cheap and fun.  Two hours from there to the salt.  And going back, maybe take a different route.  I do, often thru Tonopah or even the Bristlecone Pine forest.  Or even thru Death Valley.  I've done them both in my un-air conditioned 28 Mercury and towing -- and don't regret it.  I see you're from out of the country, so why not take a little extra time to see ours.

My friend from Ely tells me that it is most definitely NOT in the middle of nowhere.  I believe it's actually a couple of miles down the road from Ely.

If you take NV-318, you can practice for next month's Silver State Classic Challenge open road race.  I think you'd be going in the wrong direction, though. So, try it on the way home, instead.  The record for fastest speed ever recorded on a public highway (215+) was set there.   That event runs at the same time as the Shootout, so if you're coming back for that, you'll  have to take US-93, as NV-318 will be closed for the race.

The record for fastest speed ever recorded on a public highway (215+) was set there.

Trimmers, fastest Speed ever recorded on a public highway was Rudolf Caracciola's 269mph in 1938 on the German Autobahn in a Mercedes Benz. And yes, he is a member of the 200mph Club.

Hey, you're right!!!!  I forgot about that.  Apparently, the Guiness Book of World Records folks did, too.  Their certificate as issued to the Silver State Classic Challenge is shown on the SSCC website.  I went back and  read it again, and found it says "...during a legal racing event...".  But I certainly think that would have been the case with Caracciola's run, too.

In either case, it sounds like a fun event.  I looked at the rules, and (if parachutes are removed, and appropriate tires installed), any Bonneville-legal car should pass their their tech.

I always take the 15 north through Las Vegas to the 93 towards Ely Nv. to the 318 to  Ely Nv. I also sdend the night in Ely (Hotel Nv. is $50) take the 93a to Wendover and then to the salt. Fill up with Gas in Las Vegas and then in Ely. Make sure to watch you speed in the towns you go through. Also remember that you have to move your watch ahead one hour before you get to Wendover

Thanks for the info.  I used "1leg"'s route, and it was fine.

This was my first landracing event (set a record), and when I tried to use Mapquest, it was all wrong, putting me somewhere perhaps 100 miles away.

Thanks again,
