Title: Fundraising idea for Land Racing . Com
Post by: wheelrdealer on May 30, 2013, 08:12:48 AM
I had fun reading the Milwaukee Midget posts and donating based on Chris's dyno pulls. Jon I owe you for the bump, Chris pulled out a few more ponies after my donation. It was a great idea but considering most of you run "monster  big HP motors" a duplication Chris's idea could be outside my pay grade. At least at $1 per HP.

With that in mind, I thought about a contest where we keep the donations in small dollars and work on a volume of people making the smaller contributions. This apporach accomplishes a few goals, a) helps to keep this site up, b) if the contribution is a few bucks, seems more people can support the site without impacting their racing budgets c) My sons and I want you guys to know we support landracing.com. d) maybe you guys will keep us in mind if you need a fire sysyem or AN fittings.

Here is the big idea, Parkland Autosport will donate a product that has some universal appeal to both cars and bikes. We will run a contest for a specific amount of time. During that time, for a small landracing.com contribution, say $5.00 you get an entry. Jon will keep a numbered list with the contributor's name. At the end of the contest time. Parkland Autopsort will run a random number generator for the range of the contributor total and send it to Jon, the person's name that appears next to the number is the winner of the product. Parkland Autosport will ship the product at no expense to the winner.

We think this will work if a good number of members participate.

Please comment or PM if you think this will work. Jon's in the loop on this so feel free to let him know your thoughts.

Thanks,

Bill

Thanks, Bill.  I'll be honest -- Bill offered this suggestion to me a few days (weeks?) ago -- and I've been busier than a one-armed paperhanger in a rocking chair factory (or something) and haven't acted on it.  So - thanks for getting things off dead center and getting the idea out here for all to see.  I think it's a fine idea - 'specially since it doesn't require much in the way of big bucks from anyone.  That'll make it easier for things to be successful.  And maybe - just maybe -- others that are in a position to offer similar enticements will choose to offer similar goods or services so there will be that much more incentive to join the fun.

Thanks for your support, Bill.

Here is our idea for the first product. Most car and bikes have some or a lot of AN fittings. Our AN wrench sets are CNC'd T-6 6061, -03 to -20. In addition, -04 to -16 have both nut and socket combinations. This helps with hose assembly becuase the we typically use a cresent wrench on the socket becuase it is slighly larger than the nut.

Let's help prove this concept and give Jon and Nancy another tool to keep LR.COM alive and well.

Our goal is to keep the donation dollar increments low, I'll let Jon determine the $ number and the contest length, but get a lot of people to participate.

Thanks

Hey -- I guess I'd best put aside the gardening and lawn mowing and get this contest thingie started.  We'll use Bill's (Wheelrdealer) idea -- $5 gets you an entry.  Use Paypal if you can, and mark it a "gift" so they don't take out their pound of flesh - please.

When you make your entry you'll get assigned a number -- nothing fancy, just 1 or 3 or 17 - that is, I'll number the entries using numbers starting from 1.  Let's try it for two weeks so I don't get worn fingers from trying over and over to remind you that there's a contest running.  Once we end the contest Bill gets to generate the "winning" number, and said number gets the AN wrench set.

I don't want to limit the entries to Paypal users, but that'll be a really easy way to keep track of what's what.  You're welcome to PM me your entry, or just fill out the comments form in the PP form with your name and a note that you're entering the contest.  Eventually I'll need an address for Bill to ship the stuff to you.

$5 -- five bucks -- that's what it'll cost you to get a chance to win a nice set of tools that'll make you the envy of the rest of the guys on your block at home - or next to your pit at the races.  It'll be cool if we can have at least 20 entries -- it'd make a hundred (or so) bucks for the site and take only five from you.  And best of all it'll give Bill's products some extra visibility.

One last note:  If you make or sell something that you'd like to generate additional publicity for -- get in touch with me and we'll try to use your stuff for a coming contest.  Let's see if we can make this work as a long-term source of "crowd funding", hey?

I just PayPaled for two entries on the wrenches.
the PayPal page seems different. I'm pretty sure it went through as a donation.

boy, is the homepage different also. hope the history book stays up there for a while.
first I knew of it.

So Cpt. Thund. is #1, Franey is #2 and #3.  That'll be how it goes -- simple numbers stuff.  No complex formulas, and I - and everyone that visits www.landracing.com - - thank you very much.  The "contest" will be closed at the end of the day on Friday, the 14th of June.  That's our wedding anniversary - so easy to remember.  Yes, I might be preoccupied that evening, but the winning number will be selected Saturday morning as soon as Bill gets to it.

Thanks to all.  G'night -- bedtime in Skandia, Michigan.

Well, we're up to five entries so far.  Thanks -- it looks like it'll be a bit of a contest.  Let's see -- how can I make it easier for those of you that are way the heck away from easy (read: cheap) shipping?  Howsabout if you're interested in the wrench set and are figuring that the cost of shipping would be excessive - we'll deliver the wrench set, assuming you're the winner, at SpeedWeek or any of the other events at which someone from your neck of the planet is in attendance -- and have said traveler take the set back to his/your home nation where shipping it to you won't be all that much extra.  The site will pay for the "local" shipping, you'll get the set, and we'll have offered more opportunities for you to help the site and win some swag.  Okey-dokey?

No worries Jon. We will ship it to the winner at no cost. I know if our friends down under win the shipping will be more than the wrench set but let's keep it simple and fun. Besides, some winner will need these wrenches before Speedweek.

I've counted seven entries so far -- including at least one fellow that doubled his chances by donating $10 'stead of 5.  That's allowed, I guess, since it is now a done thing.

Thanks to those of you that have sent in your $$.  If you don't Paypal you're welcome to PM me with your purchase and then we'll figure out how you can get the money to landracing.com HQ.  But do that in a PM or an email, please, so I don't have to go through the hullaballew out in the public arena (a/k/a the Forum).

Keep 'em coming, boys and girls.  We've still got 13 or so days for additional entries.  And Bill wants those wrenches to go to a good home.  Heck, he stepped forward and offered them to help not only this site -- but also to help your toolbox.  Whatta guy, hey?
Title: Re: Fundraising idea for Land Racing . Com

Moving along now - it being Monday after supper and we've got ten entries.  Bill's out of town/computer reach for a couple of days - and he's worried that the current "contest" isn't doing as well as it should (in his opinion).  He's the one that thought up the idea of a small size donation to the site to get a chance to win the wrench set, hoping that the relatively small entry price would allow more folks to buy in and give a little bit to the site.

If you'd care to prove to him that his idea is/was sound -- go ahead and send the Paypal account a fiver.  Remember too that he said he'll pay the shipping no matter where -- even if the winner is in a distant land such as Nebraska or New  Zealand or - well, wherever.

Well, well -- a nice bit of news that'll help, I hope, in getting some more "contestants" for the drawing for the AN-series wrenches.  bob, our web elf, has offered to donate some time to put notice of the drawing on the home page of the forum - and maybe the home page of the site, too.  We're hoping to help Bill get some more eyeballs to see his stuff, and hoping to get more folks to pony up their $5 to have a chance to win the wrenches.  Thanks, Bob.  We've got at least 13 entries so far - - thirteen and counting ever higher. :-D

It would be great to let more people know. We guarantee the winner won't be disappointed with the wrenches.

We love landracing.com and are happy to do what we can to help.

I've been stuck here engraving coffee cups for a couple of days -- and haven't had a chancve to acknowledge the recent entries to the wrench contest.  There've been at least a half-dozen, and when things slow down tonight (I hope) I'll get notes off to all of you that your Paypal entry thingie has arrived.  Except you, Hooley -- your note has shown up and I'll send a note back to you later on.  As for the rest of you that did enter - thanks. For those of you that didn't -- why not?

There -- that's about it for now.  Oh, yeah -- we didn't spend 100% of yesterday engraving.  The local Blues Society held a gathering to announce the bands that'll be here for the Labor Day weekend Blues Festival and we just had to go to that, and then one band we've heard before - that'll be at the Festival - was playing at a local watering joint.  I could've gone home without hearing them, but Nancy insisted.  Local guys -- Travis Swanson and the Nightriders.  Decent -- and better yet, free.  But tonight it'll be thank you, thank you, and thank YOU.

Hey - I'm here.  Nancy fed us a nice supper grilled out in the back porch, and now I've got time to let you know that I've sent thank you notes to all of the entrants (I think I've got 'em all), and the count is now - - 30.  Wow.  Thanks, thank you, a ten queue, a ten queue (as Lawrence Welk might have said).

There, Bill -- I hope you're pleased to see that your early hoped-for number of entrants has been attained.  Now - how you gonna keep 'em entering?  There's still plenty of time -- one more week.  The rules are still the same - you send the site $5/chance you want to get the nice set of AN wrenches that Bill/Wheelrdealer is offering as a prize.  He sells AN fittings and these wrenches and this is his way of letting you folks out there in internetland see some of his product online - and one of you will see it in person.  He's donating the wrenches and the shipping costs.

Final note:  If you'd like to promote something you make or do - that is worth enough to make paying $5 a chance to try to get one awarded to you - - get in touch with me and maybe we'll do your thermothrackles next.  Thanks to one and all.

No - you've just fallen for my attempt to find out which names I've missed.  Now I'll call Western Onion and ask them to check with JP Morgan (that's John Peapot Morgan) where we're keeping the list -- and find said names.

Having said all of that -- both Jon and Stainless are on the list I'm keeping, so I guess I'm remiss in sending acknowledgements.  Thanks for speaking up.  Yup -- you're both on the list.  Stainless way back there, kinda near the beginning, and Jon B and Jon B. a day or so later than SS.  Thanks, gentlemen.

Well, well, well.  Another bunch of entries arrived today.  I'll get around to sending acknowledgements to those that sent $$ (or said they're going to do so - I trust you), but right now I'm going out to brave the marauding mosquitoes and work in the garden.  Suffice it to say that as of right now I've heard from 34 of youse guys.  And I will also send notice that more than one or two of you have sent in more than the basic five bucks for a single entry.  Thanks to all.

Speaking of fundraising for the site:  I received a note this morning from one of the folks that is a regular here - mentioning that I am very remiss in acknowledging a donation of stuff that he sent quite a while back for me to use to raise funds and spread the fun of land speed racing.  I am very sorry, sir, and will be in touch with you personally soon.  In the meantime -- please take this as a note to all -- if you've sent things to me to use for the good of the site AND HAVEN'T SEEN IT SINCE IT SINCE THEN - please get in touch with me and ask why.  I don't have what you'd call a personal collection so haven't kept your good intentions private for the sake of our walls, but rather have probably just got busy or lost track or plain-a** forgot about it.  I'll dig and find and respond.  I don't want you to think that I'm hoarding things here rather than using them to further the goals of landracing.com.  And those goals remain to keep the site entertaining and informative and self-sufficient.

Thanks,

And a special thank you to all that support this site.

Here is the link to the final decision maker.  Price-Waterhouse not needed here. We improvise for budgetary purposes in the LSR world. It's free and its random! http://www.random.org/ (http://www.random.org/)

Jon, I will wait in a non-descript building on the east coast for the secret signal to start the RNG. I will then send the number to Jon via a special encrypted email known only to the NSA, FBI, IRS, Al-Qaida and others that monitor our email traffic. Hopefully they won't spill the beans on Fox news or CNN before Jon has a chance to announce the winner on this thread.

Good luck to all.

Bill, you missed a couple of the secret agencies that monitor traffic.  Those would include BFE, PDQ, and WTF.  Maybe there are others, but I'm not aware of them.  That's how it is supposed to be.  But -- I do be a lot more careful than I used to be when talking on the phone, for instance, and don't joke about things that might possible be misinterpreted.  It's a heck of a note -- keeps me from cracking what i think are funny jokes. :?

Okay, ladies and gentlemen -- it's about bedtime here in Skandia, Michigan, and therefore time to end the contest to see who gets the set of AN wrenches that was donated by Bill Reilly of Parkland Autosport.

I received 73 paid entries.  That'll be the number Bill puts into his random number fluxometer, and it'll then spit out not only a winning number but also it's two front teeth.  In the morning (or soon thereafter, depending on when Bill gets the # to me -- I'll decode the code and let you all know who won.

Thank you very much, one and all, for participating.  Sure enough -- this little bit of stuff and fun has generated some decent income for the site.  We'll have another little "contest" coming up in a week or two.  This time, though, it'll be for a service, not a physical object (tool).  I expect that you'll be interested in the new one.  Stay tuned.

Contest is over.

Jon a/k/a SSS, going to bed now.  After all -- it is our wedding anniversary.  Gotta get a good night's sleep.

From the secret bunker operating on generator power using a secure data pipe the random number has been generated and sent to Jon via a high tech currier pigeon. It may take a while as the trip is all up hill to the great white north. Jon will announce the winner. I will ship the wrenches out on Monday.

Thanks to everyone for supporting Landracing.com

Oh, no -- I never thought of this happening, but maybe it's my fault.  As a security measure to keep the contest from being "played" by nefarious skullbrains -- I set it up so numbers that are divisible by eleven would be disallowed. But I must have forgot to tell Bill - 'cause the winning number is 22.  Twenty two.

Now what am I going to do? :| :|

I know -- I'll have a cup of tea, eat my cereal, and then come back and tell you the name of the winner.  Yeah, that's what I'll do. :-D  I'se just kidding about the divisible number stuff. . .  :-)

There is a mob starting to form around this thread. They are all carrying digital torches chanting show us your winner. Please do not mispronounce winner! Not to be confused with a former Congressman not running for Govnr. of New York.

Okay, okay.  I'm done in the bathroom and am ready to announce the winner.  No, I didn't spend six hours on the throne -- just shaving, and that's a five minute job.

Anyway, -- # 22 is/was Jim Larramendy.  Funny -- I don't recognise his name and can't figure out who he sings as when he posts.  And without knowing the signature -- I can't find out stuff like - like who's that?  Come forward and identify yourself, young man, and give me (or Bill Reilly, the very kind and generous sponsor of this contest) an email or PM with your address so we can get the wrench set shipped to you.

Thanks to all that sent in the entry amount(s).  Some of you stepped up and attempted to increase the likelihood that you'd win -- by buying more than one entry.  That was very kind of you.  The site and I appreciate it.  The site?  It's an inanimate object.  How can it appreciate stuff?

The site is happy because the site is all of you, and the site is stronger than ever thanks to your showing here.

Jim Larramendy, whoever you are, time to come forward and tell us.  Please.

I don't think it's JimL the bike guy.  The Jim Larramendy that won has a different email address (according to the Paypal report that I got to confirm his payment).  JimL's email address, according to his profile, isn't the same.

Jim Larramendy, Jim Larramendy, come out, come out, wherever you are.

Well, since I didn't make that statement as one of the rules -- I think it's best to wait a little while.  I sure wish I could figure out who he is according to the member list - 'cause then I could see if he's one of the regulars but using his real name (on Paypal).  No big deal, I guess, but after a while I will probably say he's had plenty of time to get in touch.  His Paypal payment was registered at a couple of minutes before 4PM EDT on Thursday, the 6th of June.  That's a bit more than a week ago.  So - do I wait a week to hear from him?

This is turning out to be quite an involved deal.  Maybe Mr. Larramendy is really from the NSA (No Such Agency) or CIA (City Insurance Agency) and is trying to get intelligence on us on the Forum.  Good luck on that! :-P

I suspect he will surface.

Here is what we are going to do. I am sending Jon a second number from the random number generator. He can match that number up to a second place set of wrenches. These are our single sided wrenches. We sold two dozen sets of these last month. The only rule is you cannot win twice so if Jim's number comes up again I will draw again to get a new winner.

How is that?

Ah, boyoboy, is this internet stuff cool or what?  Bob Clancy did some sluethifying (new word) and discovered that there IS a Jim Larramendy.  We know that he rode an '84 Kawasaki at Bub's in '11 and went 118.713 mph.  And in 2012 his best speed was a 114.601.  More to come.

Bill, that's a fine thing to do, and I'm sure that Tman is very glad that you've added a second set of wrenches to the contest.  Thanks again.  And in the meantime, we'll wait to see if this guy named "Tman" ever surfaces - while we wait for Mr. Larramendy to arrive on the scene.

There you have it -- the missing James Larramendy is a/k/a (or b/k/a) Cereal KLR.  Yay-hoo, we've finally found him.

Corngratulations, sir.  I see Bill has already acknowledged you -- so send him or me the shipping address and we'll call the first prize done.

I'll introduce the next "contest" in a day or three, but probably won't start it running 'til another week or two.  I don't want to wear out you folks - even though it's a dandy prize coming up. :-D

Well -- Bill Reilly is going to ship the package from his place, so I guess he needs the addy more than do I.  He's "wheelrdealer" here on the Forum.  PM it to him, please.

As for Cereal KLR -- I've got his someplace at the house, Bill, and will send it to you tonight.  Sorry I didn't get it sent this morning before leaving for work.

But it was a good day at the laser engraving shop - - I engraved 18 large (27 oz) beer steins with no mistakes, and a plaque for a dog's tombstone, and some trail plaques for one of the local cross country ski trails and made some plaques that a local builder places on houses he's built.  Whew - time to hit the road for home.

Well, all good things must come to an end -- and one of 'em is the silence that has reigned in the fund raising section of landracing.com.  It's been a while since I've asked for donations/sought income, and that, in general, has been a good thing.  Not only did a few of the attempts yield enough $$ that I haven't had to ask, but also I didn't want to have continuous assaults on your wallet on the site.  But with the end of the year drawing near - it's time to make sure I've got enough in the kitty to keep things on the straight and narrow, financial wise.

Among other things -- I've got a few donated copies of the World's Fastest Motorcycle - by Richard Lague.  I can either see if you'd like one of them as a "premium" for a nice (read:  good size, no $2.75 donations, please :-P) donation, or I can work up a bit of a contest for youse guys where I'll come up with a trivia question and let the prize for being the first with the best answer - be a copy of the DVD.  Since postage is most likely going to be four or five bucks -- I'd sure like the amount for the site to be a heck of a bunch more than 6 dollars, please.  If you want one and can't get the right answer or make your donation quickly enough -- he's got more of them available for sale, and copies of the new Ack Attack book to sell, too (he gets a mention for his stuff because he was kind enough to donate swag to the site).  By the also way, I'd send you to his website -- but when I checked it just now I get a message telling me that there's apparently a hacker living there instead -- just waiting to infect your computer with some nefarious disease.  Be careful.  That one was www.ignition3.tv.  I'm not sure if his email to that site works, but beware, okay?

And I've got other stuff that's been donated -- like a stack of books and other documents that Land Speed Louise donated for the Salt Talks giveaway last summer.  Some went then -- some are still with us.  And I've got other goodies, too.  I'll start digging into the lr.com inventory archive to see what there is that you can "acquire" - maybe for your personal collection, maybe so you can give it to someone as a holiday gift.

Whatever - let me know about your suggested way to turn these DVDs into money for the site.  And don't forget -- you're always welcome to send a donation to lr.com via any of the Paypal buttons on the site.  Thanks.

Well, well -- thanks, Jim and Fred.  You two sure do win the prize for the quickest response to my plea for a few bucks.  Thank you, thank you.  And now that I'm leaving the shop and heading into town for a few errands -- i won't be at a computer for an hour or two so can't let you know whom else sends in some $$ right away quick.  I'll at least send an acknowledgement back to you directly if I don't here on the Forum.

Thanks, fellas.  Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to the both of you.
