Hoo Boy, listen to A.J.'s Offy!  I sure miss that sound and Sid Campbells voice doing the Radio Coverage.
I listened to every race from about 1957 up until Television took over in the sixties.  Hero's were Eddie Sach's, Billy Vukovich, Salt Walther (go figure), Art Pollard (Oregon boy), and many, many more...................    Bob

My dad should have known better.  He took me to the 1961 Indy 500 - me, a thirteen year old kid at the time.  I'd never been to any kind of a race - nothin'!  We had seats just past the brick line on the main straight, on the outside, about five rows up from the fence.  The pace car pulled off after the parade and warm up laps and thirty-three Offy's on methanol roared past, blanketing us with rubber dust and exhaust smell.  More than fifty years later I can still remember the thrill, the excitement, and smell.

And from that I've ended up spending way more money than is reasonable, just to go land speed racing so I can live the dream.  Thanks, Dad.

Sid COLLINS was the voice of the 500 on radio and I would listen to him and Luke Walton, Donald Davidson and the others each year without moving until my bladder DEMANDED attention.  Then I learned to have a radio in the facilities so as not to miss a word!  My dad started taking me to time trials in 1958.  I was not only lucky enough to hear the growl of the Offys but also the Banshee scream of the Novis too.  It is a sound that I will treasure all the rest of my life.  Sid Collins voice was pure magic to a kid (and later a supposed grown up) listening to the radio, but nothing ever matched being at the track and hearing Tom Carnegie boom out those incredible words, "IT'S A NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEW TRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK RECOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORD!"   Still send chills up my spine even as a genuine gray beard now!

My dad also took me to the Speedway in 1958. After observing AJ Foyt for a couple of days he said to me "Watch that kid, he may be something"

Glen and all, thought the end sucked. If no yellow could have been a great finish, probably 3 wide. Happy for TK but INDY needs to follow NASCAR for the finishes.........J.D.

JD,

I agree with Robin Miller - they run 200 laps in ID, it is not the Indy 205, 215, etc.

Most lead changes, fastest, etc. EVER. Green flag finish could have ranked this race as best ever.

It was a great race! It is the Indy 500 and no more even though a green flag checker would have beem nice
