The only thing I can see that you have forgot is a really big depression in the area that your "attachements" will be located as to ride this they must be BIG!!!
Neat build, good luck!
Rex

Wow! that's the most condensed build thread I've ever seen!
Love the bike-looks like a real fun project, and it appears you are doing a great job!
How much boost are you planning on running?
Keep up the great work!
-
Go Big or Stay Home! Good to start with a 4-pack; make it a true 8-pack later. Your info says you are a "Newbie." Methinks not.
Tom

Nice job. I'm looking forward to seeing the results.   :-D

18 pounds is the plan for now. We will see how it works after it gets some salt on it.

Tom
The 8pack idea was a little over optimistic.. I agree, I better stick with 4 until I upgrade from Newbie :-D
-
Great Build Project 8-) 8-) 8-)
Properly Speed-Rated tires may be a problem
-
Holy $HIT!! That is cool! Hope that turbo is big enough! Like Koncrete said, Go big or go home! Looking forward to seeing this thing roar down the salt! Good Job, Keep it up!!
-
Damb son this thing is getting serious, hang on sloopy when you get a hand full of that twist grip
Like Rex says you must bring your Attachment's in a wheelbarrow!!!
Wow what a great build as i'am locked in to your thread
Dare i ask is it a fueler or gas burner?
Don
-
I was thinking its going to sound awesome until the turbos showed up. Still Bad A$$. What is your target speed?
-
It reminds me of double engine drag bikes from years ago. A nice build.
-
photos are huge ... there is way to reduce them ... check with Slim.
Joe

Another awesome build, this forum is a gearheads dream.
My buddy built a twin engine Honda, but hacked off the back of the front motor to get away from two transmissions. Interested to see how you work out the details. Those look to be the big Yamahas, 1300 or 1854cc each?
Please tell me you will be riding it at BUB event...
-
Dare i ask is it a fueler or gas burner?
Don
I guess I should have gave a little more info at the beginning of my thread  I plan to start out in the Gas class and then maybe move over to fuel later. The engines are not very big (1670s) so that puts it a 3340cc, 8.3 to 1 compression, 4 valve heads, 1000cc injectors, a single GT4088r turbo and start out around 18 pounds of boost.
I was thinking its going to sound awesome until the turbos showed up. Still Bad A$$. What is your target speed?
Well the short version is. My wife wanted to go to SpeedWeek so she told me to build something fast that would not embarrass her (whatever that means?). It is setup for just north of 230 (wheel speed) so if everything goes right just over 200. I would really like to get a HAT to cover my little bald spot  but that is going to be easier said than done as we all know... The downfall is the minimum is 210. I am not sure if it can get there.
-
I know I must have done something wrong... I was able to rig my custom double throttle cables from Motion Pro in less than 5 mins.
I hope this is better Joe. I use tinypic to resize.

I appreciate the consideration. Nice job. I am enjoying your build.

Thanks Scott,
Well the good news is, I figured out how I want to run my fuel lines. The bad new is I have to get out my CC and order a bunch of firesleeve.

Those tubes upside the cylinders...are there pushrods in there?
-
Those tubes upside the cylinders...are there pushrods in there?
Yes, both pushrods run in a large single tube on the right side of the engines.
-
I had a pretty productive day building brackets for the LCD displays, installing firesleeve, boost gauge and water pump. I started laying out the wires and I can see it is going to be a total pain is the XXX. Trying to find any extra room is getting very difficult but with less than 100 days. The show must go on!!!

I finished the outer bearing support to control any vertical movement.

Also got the water pump mounted, coils brackets, coils and rear engine MAP sensors mounted.

Hoping that you cut the right wires ... I just finished troubleshooting a turbo single engine EFI harness problem and it is not something I recommend for peace of mind.

I spent a lot of time making sure everything was marked but anytime you have to join two harnesses. There is a chance for error. Needless to say I will not be sleeping very well at night till I get it started again.
-
It is official!! The left side is full and about 95% complete now  I still need to finish welding and painting the shifter linkage and find somebody to make me a 10 foot long brake hose. I am going to try to see if it will make any boost and make sure the 3 bar map is working by next weekend.

Hi 8 Pack
Wow you need a serious ' Roadmap ' to see where you have been and where you are going when working on that baby, what a bunch of stuff packed in between the 2 wheels.
Should be looking pretty good for not much wheel spin with all that weight even on the salt, do you have any idea of how much it weighs?
Neat job you have done.
Don
-
Don, I am not sure but I know it is getting pretty fat. I also know my motorcycle lift hates me. I am guessing it will be close to 1200#s
And your right. If I have to take it apart it's going to take a lot of post-it notes to get it back together...
-
That bike is amazing. I don't know how you do it. This highly complicated Triumph has kept me puzzled all weekend. Something like that double Warrior is beyond comprehension.
-
Hi Wobbly
With my years of crankshafts etc i always thought about how one could make power with out all those rotating parts, well it looks like you have figured it out with just a intake & exhaust system
Good Going !!!

I think we should trade projects for the next 2 months
I been busy working on my art project but I have not had very much free time to post. I have been building heat shields and working on my punch-list. The smell of burning chicken legs does not turn me no :-D My goal is to get it on the dyno next week Friday. It is unbelievable how time consuming everything is now that it is getting close to the end :?

Holy   :roll:Batman :-o I'm tying to imagine the body work :|
No body work this year. The combination of running out of time and my wife reminding me that I destroyed my budget. We'll be runnin naked...
The good news is provided the machine shop finishes my part tomorrow. I should be ready for the dyno next week
-
Not a very good video but more like a teaser for next Monday. "The joys of being my neighbor" is what I like to call the video :-D (it was fathers day so I did not think it would be very nice bouncing the engines off the rev limiter)
I am on the books for next Monday at the dyno:D I get back into the states in a couple days. I still need to close up some loose ends Friday and Saturday. Then spend most of Sunday trying to get the hanger queen out of the shop and onto my trailer. This should be interesting :-o
The biggest thing I need to address is my heat shield. It's better but still needs more. The none wrapped exhaust is 540*f, single wrap is just over 380*, triple 250* and my shield is 150-180*. I order 1/4" Armor Exhaust Heat Shield and I will cover both sides of the heat shield. Start it up and hope it gets down to a reasonable level.
On the good side... I should have better videos soon. I am ordering a gopro today

Engine interconnect is reinstalled with bracing and the correct washers... I found that the washers that were tack welded to the nuts bottomed out on the spline. Doh!!!

I learned a couple things today...
1) My new heat shield material works awesome (only 91* after my little stunt)
2) It makes boost
3) My rear brake HATES me
4) and the rear brake will not hold 8 pounds of boost  can't wait to see what 18 pounds looks like on the dyno Monday.
That is all in on the rear brake and I quit when it hit 550*f (ouch glad I don't need that)
Not to mention smoking myself out of the garage....

Looks like everything is dyno ready  I will be leaving the fuel pressure gauge on just to make sure the rising rate fuel regulator is working as advertised.
Last week while I was building my heat shield. I was thinking I have test fit everything 10 times expect for myself with full gear for a while. I am glad I ate a salad last week :-o(I was starting to think my suit shrunk). Everything feels good but I wish I was able to tuck my right leg in better. The heat shield causes my leg to stick out a little (still better than the smell of burning HAIR )

I bought a couple last week. I just have not had a chance to do anything with them yet.

240.9 HP
294.2 torque @ 4298 rpm
This was as the boost was rocking through 10#s on its way to 20#s.
It may have been spinning on the dyno when the boost came on and destroyed my a rear tire :-o All and all I am very happy with only a couple loose ends to fix.
Second video is at 75% and as you can tell the BOV works :-D

If it does that to the tire strapped to the dyno you may want to make sure that your turbo doesn't come on to hard. I have seen more that one car an bike spin leaving the line when the turbo came on to fast and the tires just spun..
You really look ready! Looking forward to seeing you at the salt!
Rex

Looks great and this is the first time I have seen the build images  one thing I would like to see on a double with all that weight is a functional front brake added..in the event you have a failure, oil fire, lose a chain that takes out the rear brake you will have a hard time waiting for a nearly 1,500lb bike and rider to come to a stop.
Again very cool double!
-

The front brake is more than likely a very good idea however it looks like it will have to be added next year. The good news is that my brake line does not cross the chain (hand control rear brake). I just don't think I have enough build days left to make that happen (bigger fish to fry).

Nice application of Hayabusa parts on the bike...is the engine a four valve dual overhead cam?
John
-

John
Everybody knows if you want your bike to go fast. You have to use some Busa parts?! Right :-D No, they are 1700 Yamaha pushrod engines (4 valve 2 plug heads)
-
Looks like gray is out and orange is in!? My wife said orange and a black sharpie work better on the salt. I replied roger BOSS  Looks like I will be riding the Orange Peeler :-D

Orange is fast, and always in stock on the auto parts shelves!

And I thought that Bob George's twin Harley was big...........
but I think Dave Campos went over 230 on it, many tears ago.
Rex or Kent was it high gear only?
FREUD
-
Maybe not, IIRC it snapped a chain in '71 on that year's hard salt. I know they came back with many changes for '72. I'd also like any more details on that build if anyone has them. It impressed me at the time as does this one now. All the best for a safe, fun, and FAST meet 8pack!

With only 19 days left before Bonneville. I decided it was safe to pull the secret weapon from storage :-o I would tell you but Customs already called me 4 times and not sure if I want to talk to the NSA  I got the fuel tank back on but I still have to do a couple things to finish the install. I also included a picture of the kickstand in stealth mode :-D

I am pretty sure my turbo will not make up for having a fairing. Maybe next year I will get my permission slip signed by my wife to add one
I may be wrong but I don't think there has ever been a naked pushrod bike record over 200?
-
Dave Matsons Vincent, 2000 M/F 210.357, 08/88
-
Dave Matsons Vincent, 2000 M/F 210.357, 08/88
Why was he in the M-F class not the M-PF class? Are the pushrods to short to qualify, cam position or???
-
I'm not sure -- but maybe back in '88 there wasn't a separate class for pushrods. . .? But then -- I ride metric bikes with OHC so how would I know? :?
I do know Dave Matson and his bike and enjoy seeing him on the salt every year. And it's cool -- because not all that many Vincents run on nitro.
-
Do remember that SCTA/BNI will change the classes without telling anybody......at least they did in the "old days"..............so who knows what class Dave was running in......they changed our class 3 times back in the 1980/1990's without telling us......New M/C chairman, new classes and new interpretation of Tech. rules...... Lost 3 records.............Oh, well no problem retired now...............But still BS.
-
I looked through the records and every record with a Vincent engine is in the non-pushrod class. I do not have my rule book with me but I remember a statement about pushrod length or cam position. I guess they had a pushrod class in 1985 because there is a record.
-
Yes, funny how Vincents are not in the pushrod class, a shame really. Also, don't let the 2000cc class for Matson's old records fool you like some have been, it was done with a single motor, he did it before there was a 1650 class, although his actual displacement back then was less than 1650. It has only been the last few years that Dave has had a really big motor and moved into the 2000cc class proper.
-
"Also, don't let the 2000cc class for Matson's old records fool you like some have been, it was done with a single motor, he did it before there was a 1650 class, although his actual displacement back then was less than 1650."
If that's the case, then SCTA should be notified that they belong in the 1650 class, if applicable. SCTA has done this before when new categories or engine sizes have been added.
-
Looking at the record book. The 1650 and 2000cc classes look to be the sweat spot for motorcycles. When you step up to the 3000 and Unlimited classes most of the speeds are slower. I am sure there are a bundle of reasons. I look at my build and I can come up with a handfull of reasons it may not run as fast as the smaller bikes. However my dream was to build a double engine turbo bike that was big enough to be in the unlimited class. We are all going to find out how it works in about 18 days
-
That's one cool Bike hope all goes to plan
I digress, aren't Vincents in Vintage Classes VG or VF as they were pre 1956 Bikes?
Pete
-
Now that months turned into weeks and weeks turned into days. I decided I need to kick it into high gear and finish up. That being said today started off on the wrong foot :x I could not get the rear engine started because I did not get a chance to flush out the race gas after the tank cracked. After a string of words I can't repeat :-o and 2 hours of jacking around I finally got both of them started
With the time I had left today. I got the last of the gauges and data loggers mounted today. I also decided now that I don't live in a village anymore. I should at least install matching wheels  and check for rear wheel alignment.
I also got a chance to look at the rulebook on the requirements of the pushrod class. "Shall have pushrod operated valves with a camshaft located at least one crankshaft stroke below the OEM cylinder deck position or utilize OEM pushrod length at least twice the crankshaft stroke"
-
The Vincent pushrods are long enough for the pushrod class and the only engine I can think of that isn't, are the last BMW's with the high cam and very short pushrods. In the 60's and 70's there were very few large OHC engines, so pushrod motors still ruled the 1350 and above classes and didn't really need a separate pushrod class. It would be kind of fun if they could do a few classes where everything was factored by engine type with 600 multis, 500 2-strokes, 750 twins, 1600 pushrod v-twins, etc. It might make for some interesting racing instead of one or two bikes dominating a lot of classes.
-
That's what we need -- more motorcycle classes. What about the ones with the green seats? Reminds me of the guy who told me his '55 Chevy shouldn't compete with the Monzas 'cause the Tri-Five were what the people came to see. After all, this is basically a spectator sport, right?
-
Momentary hijack, if you don't mind. Maybe it's 'cause I race bikes and not cars -- but just what, exactly, is a "Tri-Five" -- other than a Chevy something. What are the three fives involved? Thanks.
-
Tri-Five....55, 56 & 57.
Bill

Everything I need (or at least I think I need) from the garage is in the pile ready to go. WOW I hope I dont need all of it... 2 days of flying, come home, pack it up and then we are going to blow this popsicle stand:D

Now its time to put this baby to bed and go racing

There are some other guys who land their planes at the Salt Flats. No reason you shouldn't do the same.
Tom
-
Well, really, there is a reason not to land your plane opn the salt this year. Really, although maybe if that's his personal plane he could buy his way out of it. But - BLM has stated unequivocally that no planes will be allowed to land on the salt this year.
-
They baby would be up for sale if I owned it. But then I would have to figure out what to do with the money
-
So how did it go ??
i hear your bike details called out once but no speeds,
-
I see on the run logs that bike #6661B made runs of 164mph and 154mph on an open record. No turn-outs or false starts. 8pack you are to be congratulated for successfully completing these fantastic runs. Must be making some glorious music.
Tom

Hi 8
I agree with Tom and keep that beauty running and a bit faster with each ride

We hit a soft spot on the way to 200 and had a rear bearing fail.

Good, waiting to go into surgery. They are coing to pin a couple of my broken ribs and bleed off some fluid off my left lung. I was able to get slowed to around 100 before I can off.

It's a good sign when you're back to posting. I hope the surgeries go well.
I hope when you get the time to check the bike out it isn't too bad. You did a really good looking job on that project.
All the best in your recovery.

Glad to hear you are doing well, that getting off moving vehicles will give you religion fast.

Hi 8
That surfing stuff on the salt at 100 is a tough gig, sure glad you are doing pretty good and wishing you a speedy heal up !!!

Man-o-man, Mr.8Pack, sir - you have our best wishes for a quick and speedy and complete recovery. We were to your right on the line when you made that last run Friday - and I didn't realise that it was you that was stretched out over the bike watching the data as you warmed it. I sure as heck would have walked over for a howdy. About the get-off -- my sincere sympathies. The bike looked tasty from where Nancy and I were waiting, and sounded great, too. But since I was preparing for a run, too, I didn't take the time to let my mind wander into the land where I would have recognised you.
Best wishes, and stay in touch on the Forum so we can help monitor your recovery from the crash and surgery.

Hey Mr. 8,
Hope all the surgeries and recovery goes as smoothly as it can! Our bike did ride by your pits and someone from your group pointed and said something... Wish I would've asked the driver to stop.
Bike looked great out on the salt and you did have some impressive speeds!
Be well, & I'll definitely drop by next year!

Sounds like they are going to releases me from the hospital tomorrow  They pulled the drain tube from my lung, no more O2 needed and I am walking without a walker today. Thank you for the prayers and wishes. Looking forward to getting home. My understanding is that the bike is still in very good condition.

That's great! Good to hear you are doing better!

Good to hear your up and moving around. It all gets better from here on.
I heard them announce that you went down and then shortly afterwards, they unplugged and that's how the broad cast ended for speed week.

I hope the healing is rapid and continues to go well.

Excellent news, being home is always preferable to a hospital stay no matter how brief. 8-)

Stoney, that's great news! See my post elsewhere for being a lucky, unlucky guy. I wish you a speedy and full recovery and may you be able to have the courage and support to continue with your dreams. It was sure great to talk with you during Speed Week and long may that continue. Cheers. Jim
