Does anyone have recommendations for an expert supplier in the world of CV joints? For my Rampage project, I need to put together a couple of driveshafts that are not "off the shelf" items.
In the "old days", it was somewhat common to buy CV rebuild kits, consisting of new crosses, cages, balls, tripod innards, clamps, boots, ets. If I could do that, I think I could have the ability to switch the drive flanges as needed.
These days, everything seems to be "Autozone" quality rebuilt shafts, which are dubious at best.
I'd like to find someone who really knows their stuff, who can help with supplying the correct parts so that I can assemble a pair of shafts that will work for my application.

Steve,
Try a racing supplier like Pegasus. They won't be cheap, but should be the better quality material. Forget the oriental cheese metal ones, hold out for some made in germany or france. You might ask Swift where they source the CV's they use. If all else fails a VW dealer should be able to supply good OEM german ones. The euros know about good Cv's. If you need the bigger sizes, try an Audi dealer. Indy cars use the large "Lobro" joints. There are probably a couple of specialty CV joint & axle manufacturers around Indianapolis. I've been out of it too long, but Tony may know someone you can contact.
Hope this helps,

Hi Steve,
For my projects I go to cvaxle express here in SLC utah, for my Geo, its not exactly off the shelf application (Powered by a snowmobile engine, still utilizing a Geo trans).
Also, many years ago, I had a pontiac grand prix with a 5 spd manual transmission. Because of limited production, I could not get the complete CV axle, but they had all the parts to make one, and they did rebuild mine
I have since taken many cv axle items to them with great success, and they are reasonable on turn around time and cost.
Here is the info:
cvaxleexpress.com
Ph # 800-999-axle Or 801-466-5777
Hope this helps

Steve, I am not a dealer for them but second Pegasus in Wisconsin. In fact their catalog is at my side as I type this. I think the Midget turned me onto them?

I buy from Pegasus only when I have to, prices are very high. Off road VW based stuff uses German CV joints, like Porsche 930 turbo. The long side Rabbit, etc. drive axles are hollow and easy to shorten or modify.

Thanks, guys - now we are cooking. I'll make contact with Pegasus and CVaxle express.
The shafts I need will have early Dodge Omni inner CV's, which fit the hybrid VW/Dodge transaxle. This is basically a VW transaxle with a different ring and pinion, and a different bolt pattern for the inner CV. The outer CV will match up with a '91 Plymouth Acclaim, which is a very common "K-Car" spline and diameter.
I have a modest collection of shafts and joints from 3 different junkyard cars, which I attempted to assemble into a working model last night. What a greasy job. If there is anything more greasy than the inside of a CV joint, I hope I never encounter it.
I was actually able to make up a shaft with the correct inners and outers last night, but I didn't have an actual shaft which was long enough to make up the space between the trans and wheel hubs. I could make a spacer to get the correct length, but would prefer one continuous piece of steel shafting if possible.
Thanks again,
Steve.
I know it's possible, just need someone with the right knowledge and parts to put it all together.

Steve;
What is the length of the axles that you need? I have a pair of Summers Brothers 4340 axles that were spares for a Porsche 962 that ran at Sebring. They are unused and fit a 930 CV joint (I think).

Neil:
I'll have to work backwards to get the raw shaft length. Since I don't have the inner and outer CV's handy, I'll have to check when I get home tonight.
Thanks,
Steve.

Steve,
I think that Mark Williams just north of Denver also makes custom axles and CVs. Bring dollars.

have you heard of these guys?
www.raxles.com
us dsm/colt guys used to use them back in the day for custom stronger axles as well. then we learned about wheel hop and havent had much issues since..

Target550 used Mark Williams.
Some small glitches and E X P E N S I V E.
They also missed their delivery time and didn't return calls.
Other than that they did OK.
At least they did finally deliver.

I have had some (used) MW stuff, very nice! I looked into becomming a dealer but the buy in was as much as I had in my last hotrod. :-(

I have heard of Raxles, and I checked out their site as well. Nice to know that they sponsor a Rear Engine Modified Roadster.
As far as the Mark Williams stuff - I'm sure it's very nice stuff.
I'm not looking for something to handle 1800 hp (at this point) :-D, I just need something that will fit on both ends and take up the right amount of space in between.
I'm waiting to hear back from CV Axle Express in Utah. Something about dealing with a vendor in Utah just seems "right".

Steve,
If you end up at Mark Williams, I could 'bug' them easily for you- they're about an hour away from me. It's a nice ride over there on the Harley, so unreturned phone calls could be easily remedied!
-
Ya-but . . . we shouldn't have to waste time and money to encourage people to take our money and do their job.
-
Stan, you're absolutely correct-but when you need what you need, sometimes 'prodding' is the easiest solution!

As I remember the two suppliers for those CV shafts were Citroen and GKN. Perhaps someone still has a catalog for these folks.

Based on the records I've seen, you are correct about Citroen and GKN. I've ordered a set of Ebay reman units for a '79 Horizon, mainly to get my hands on what should be the correct length shafts.

On our RMR we will be using Lobro CV joints, same style as the 935. Tony
