Title: Salt Talks 2013 t-shirts
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on March 19, 2013, 09:11:35 AM
Well, well -- it's time to start thinking about whose vehicles will be on the shirt for this year.  We'll be having Salt Talks, the picnic, on 11 August.  Mark your racing calendars, please.  I haven't heard from Mike Crawford yet - but will assume that we'll hold the event at the new parking area across the street from his store - Carquest, at the east end of Wendover, Utah.  It was just dandy there last year -- and no problems with mud in case it rains.

To the shirts:  Landracing.com will put three or maybe four vehicles on the front of the shirt, and those vehicles will be chosen based on the total amount of $$ that's donated by those who care to "enter" the auction for the spots.  Nancy and I have done it this way for a couple of years, and for us it works just dandy.  If we do it this way we get enough to pay for the shirts and artwork in advance.  In the past we'd spend our kilobuck and more to get the shirts done -- and then hope that we'd sell enough to not only get our money back but also to make a profit for the website.  It almost never worked out.  In fact - when I get home tonight I'm goinng to post some information about old shirts that are for sale.  I've even got photos of 'em.

Don't start the bidding for the front of the 2013 shirt yet -- unless you're absolutely positive that you want to be on the shirt.  Tell me the amount you'll bid (when the time comes) by PM - so your buddies don't know how much you spent to get your photo on the shirt.  Ah, yes -- we'd really appreciate it if you'd nominate race vehicles instead of naked people.  Yeah, I understand -- but I'd rather not take a chance on diminishing sales because of a somewhat off-color appearing bit of art.

Thanks.  I'll get started soon -- and you folks start thinking about if yo're going to try to get on the shirt.

The bidding is open as of right now.  If you'd like to both help landracing.com continue to provide all of the stuff it down for you -- including the Forum and live audio streaming and a place to hang out with other racers -- and if you'd like to have YOUR vehicle (or any other, for that matter) on the 2013 Salt Talks t-shirt - all you've got to do is be on of the three or four high bidders for that opportunity.  Send your bids/offers to me via PM (assuming you don't want others to see your $$ amount) and I'll keep track of 'em.  It'll take a week or so for enough folks to show interest and send me bids, and then I'll tell you who were the winners of the prized location on the shirts.  We print the photos on the front of the shirts -- not the back like some lame-o places do.  We put 'em where others can see them while talking to you, not after you've walked on past.

The shirts are high-quality polyester - so we can put full-color photographs on them.  No silk screening for us -- it's too limiting and too lacking in colors.  I'll have you send your chosen photo to me and Nancy and I will make the shirts for all of us.  They'll be available at SpeedWeek - and at Salt Talks 2013 on Sunday, 11 August, too.

Let the mad rush begin! :-o

Well -- so far the t-shirt auction has gone over like a fart in church.  Do any of you want Salt Talks 2013 t-shirts?

Part of the raison d'ete for the shirts is to commemorate the event, and part of it is to generate some revenue for the website.  And, in the latter subject -- we've always had a bunch of leftovers -- to the point that the "profit" is still sitting on the shelves in our basement, not residing in the drawers of your spare bedroom.

To counter that unfortunate situation we turned to auctioning off spots on the shirt.  That's worked well up to now, with three or even four of youse guys sending in enough money, in advance, to make sure that we'll at least come out of the shirt debacle ahead of the game.  And that's why I'm hoping that this reminder will cause a few of you (at least a few) to get busy and figure out ho much you feel will make a winning bid for space on the shirt.  That way, of course, lots of folks will end up with a picture of your car or bike on their shirt(s).  Please do what you can.

Let me know your bid for the space - and I'll let you know where the bidding is now and then (and if you ask when you're sending me a bid).

See you on the salt.

Well, Okay!  That's better.  I've got two bids now, so I guess the shirts will not be forgone this season after all.  There's plenty of room left for one - maybe two more on the shirt.  I'm at the store and don't have all of the photos here with me to remind you of what the '12 shirts looked like, but tonight (assuming I get home in time) I'll try to remember to post one or to.

The photos on the shirts will be just that -- full-color photos, not just an artist's rendering of your vehicle which is then silk screened onto the fabric.  Therefore -- when you send a photo for us to use we'd like the best one you've got -- good focus, good color, nice contrast - all of that stuff.  Remember GI, GO!

Good question.  I've been busy making all of 250 medals for a track meet and such things as them -- so haven't reported for a day or two.  The status right now is that there are three bids, and the total amount offered for being on the t-shirt is enough that we can do without further bids.  I will give it one more day, but that'll be it -- so I can tell the "winners" to get cracking on finding and sending some really good photos to Nancy (she's the artistic one in this club) so she can fashion them into the art for the shirt.

Thanks to those that have already stood up and offered some $$ to the site (via being on the shirt for 2013), and to those that were thinking about it -- well, you'll need to beat $200 to make it into the top three.  Thanks again, ladies and gentlemen.

Well, we do need to keep some standards, you know.  The winners of the auction for the space on the 2013 Salt Talks t-shirts are Rouse, Stainless, and Fred Vance.

Gentlemen, I'll be in touch with you, but in the meantime you're welcome to dig up your chosen photo for this year.  We'll be doing the shirts in-house using photo/sublimation techniques -- so the shirt will show the details of a photo.  The shirts are polyester and we'll tell you later what color.  White is standard, but we do look for a light grey - to sorta hide the grease stains.

Thanks to the bunch of you that offered help and those that even offered bids.  Remember that this website is for all of us - and that I appreciate all of youse guys out there.  Thanks again.

Thanks.

So would I, Fred.  It matches my hair.  Better than all white, of course.  And yes, I'm sure the bald guys will chip in with their 2 cents' worth -- saying no color (transparent) is better still.  And you know that they'll follow that request with the request for a photo of Nancy modeling the transparent shirt.  I wonder if I can convince her to give it a try. . .

This will stand as acknowledgement that I've got the photos/art for all three of the winning bidders for the 2013 Salt Talks t-shirt as well as for one sponsor.  And I'm nearly done developing the extra art/stuff for the special edition shirts.  What "special edition", you ask?  MM/Chris and I have decided that the award for those of you that supported the Dynothon will be a special Salt Talks shirt with some Grenade art on it.  They'll be really cool collector's edition items, you know -- so it isn't too late for you to stump up for the Dynothon's final (95.1 hp) and get on the short bus (did I say that?  I meant the short list  ) of LR.com folks that will sporting super-duper special shirts.

Slim is doing this in such a way that it will not detract from the folks who sponsored the shirt, but also in such a way that the fashion conscious, observant and "in-the-know" folks can be smug without fearing accusations of being hipsters.

Yah, well, dere you hab it.  The shirts will feature two bikes and a car and two sleeve logo/things as well as the landracing.com logo.  I've gotta get me hiney in gear to get 'em going, though.  I've got the three photos and the art for the logos -- gotta order the blank shirts.  Maybe I should ask you specifically -- and hope that others read this:

Has anybody got specific size needs other than the usual L, XL, 2XL, etc?  We normally don't do small shirts (as in for kids) nor have we made string top shirts for ladies.  It'll be harder than ever to do the string tops this year if we tried -- where would I put the sleeve logos?

Hey, hay, HAEY!  The art is done for the 2013 Salt Talks shirt.  As soon as I get the time I'll post the art for you all to enjoy and appreciate and drool over (wait a minute -- no, no nudies of Nancy this time).  Anyway, the shirt art is on the way, via the internet, to the place that makes the special heat transfer sheets for us, and by early next week we'll have the transfers here and start making shirts.  Woo-hoo, they'll be ready for SpeedWeek with time to spare.

And we're still thinking of having Salt Talks II at WoS, so if you're not going to be at SW - you'll have a further chance to get your 2013 Salt Talks shirt.  The shirt will be the same for both events.

Thanks to those of you that help support this site by participating in the auction and by buying shirts.

Reminder # 17 or so:  We're making the Salt Talks shirts even as I type.  We'll have something around 120 or them for sale at BOTH Salt Talks events, although (obviously) there won't be as good a selection at WoS Salt Talks.  We'll have them at our pit, too, but the SCTA rules don't allow selling anything but race team paraphernalia at the pit, so all you can do is look at 'em, maybe ask us to reserve one (or more) for you, and have us hand it to you off the salt.  I have no interest in trying to sneak around SCTA rules for the event, and if we sell 'em at the pit -- we intend to follow the rules and give SCTA their 17% (or whatever) cut of the revenue.  Since these shirts are sold as a fundraiser I'm loath to give up the percentage - so please don't make us do it.

Anyway, the shirts are being made.  I don't have a copy of the front art yet, but it includes a blue motorcycle, a yellow 'liner (it was a liner, wasn't it, Stainless?) and Johnnie Rouse's bike and crew.  One sleeve has the logo for Parkland Autosports (thank you, Bill Reilly/Wheelrdealer), and the other will have the MM/Dynothon notation (small, but still -- very special).  On the back there's the landracing.com logo and an "In Memoriam" note to help us remember Bill Warner each time we see or wear the shirt.

Also about Salt Talks:  I've still got time to make Salt Talks name badges for you.  They're 4" wide by 2" tall, have your preferred text (name, location, vehicle number, stuff like that - up to four lines) and also an outline of the mountains out at Bonneville.  They don't say Salt Talks -- so you can wear 'em anyplace that you want folks to know your name and that you're a Bville racer.  $5 each.  Get me the information you want on yours pronto -- I've got to make them next week, and what with packing and such -- I can't find lots of time right near our departure.

Also about Salt Talks:  Reminder number whatever it is that we'll have the usual raffle/drawing for donated items at the picnic.  Just yesterday a well-known salt flats historian called and offered some swag - old issues of magazines, posters, and so on.  Some of it will be raffled individually, some will probably be packaged with other stuff to reduce the sheer number of times I have to shout out the winning ticket number.  The raffle is a fundraiser for landracing.com - so buy lots of raffle tickets and help keep the site going.  We've also got one big gift item planned for each event (I think - still awaiting confirmation) - a gift that'll be worth hundreds of dollars.  Those tickets will sell for $10 each and there'll be a limited number of 'em available so your chances of winning will be way better than if you're only buying "regular" raffle tickets.

Deep enough for now.  See you on the salt.

I don't have the final version of the shirt available -- the transfer sheets won't be at Kudos for another day or two - - but we made up this one using an early draft/proof of the art and put it on a sleeveless shirt - just to get an idea of where we were.  The art is pretty close to the final.  One sleeve of the t-shirt will have a business logo on it and the back will have both the lr.com logo and a tribute to Bill Warner.  I've got the full-size art available online -- but the file size is just short of 8MB -- kinda big to cram into a 500kb slot.  You'll get to see it all soon, but at least now you've got an idea of what it'll look like.

Sure hope the transfer sheets get here soon.  One week from today we'll be motoring through North Dakota and much of Montana - so Nancy has 'til we leave home to make about 160 shirts.  We use a "clamshell" type heat press - grab the handle and pull forward and down, wait 55 seconds, lift and push the handle up  and then over to the left.  She's getting lots of upper body exercise and development which, as most of you know, she needs. :-D :-D

Right-- like Custer needed more Indians!

Last call for Salt T-shirts to be delivered at SpeedWeek.  I've got orders from Fred, Bill, Thomas Graf, and Justin.  Those are from the PM list.  I have to go through the emails at the house to find more, but if you're not positive that I'll find your order -- let me know again.  We need to make the shirts tomorrow (Wednesday) so get word to me poste haste.  Salt Talks regular shirts are $20 each.

As for Dynothon shirts -- Gregg, Jorge, Ron, Graham, and Luke have got their orders in via PM.  Are there others -- or email orders?  Again -- lemme know.  These are available if you donated at least $40 to the Dynothon -- no extra charge.  We won't have many "extras" at Bville - so if you want one you've gotta get to me soon and pledge at least that $40.

Finally -- I'll add Salt Talks name badges here.  I've got some already set up in the 'puter, and also Frankie and Larry and Justin, and Freud, John, Phil, Dean, Richard, and Graham.  Anybody else want one?  $5/each.

Be in touch, hey?

Are you bringing them all to Speedweek or just the orders?  I need probably 4 XLs, and a L or M.

Are you bringing any old leftovers from previous years?  I think those will sell to first timers.

Okey-dokey, Mr. Stainless, SIR!  We've got your request marked down for 4 ea XL and one ea. L (unless you insist you want an "M").  We ordered and made way more L size than we did M.

We'll have all of the shirts at SpeedWeek and whatever is left will be also at WoS.

As for old (out of date) shirts -- sure, we'll have room to pack 'em in the trailer this year, but in the past we've had one heck of a time getting them sold once they're out of date.  I'll be willing to sell them at drastic discount -- trying to recapture some of the money invested in them in the years gone past.  You know -- the old idea of "A five in hand is more valuable than a twenty sitting in the box".  I'll announce that the shirts are available at said deep discounts -- would be nice to turn 'em into ten dollar bills.

Payment at the salt - whether Salt Talks or in town or wherever - is cash or check, no credit cards.  Paypal will work but you might have a difficult time getting to your Paypal account.

C U ona salt.

I sent you a PM on the shirt count I wanted , it was a while back. I hope you got it. If not I'll have to remember the total count and sizes again and let you know.

I am now going to be there, so I need to know if I need to have someone pick them up there, or could you mail them to me?

Yup -- we got the message and today Nancy made all of 'em for you.  Did you typo when you say "I am NOW going to be there" -- meaning to have said "I am NOT going to be there"?  Either way -- We'll have the shirts with us at SpeedWeek and will be happy to have someone pick 'em up for you.  I'll PM you with further comments.  by the way  -- we'll be able to hold them 'til World of Speed if you'll be there, but you're welcome to them as soon as you want.  See your PM after I get home and put the pizza in the oven.

But -- your shirts are all done and separated and in a big box.

Good.  Geoff Green emailed about his (desired) shirt -- and now it's kinda too late, at least for a while.  We're in SLC tonight and headed for the salt by noontime tomorrow.  But when we get back to the world -- then we'll catch up on what orders there are awaiting us.

Nice weather for racing 90++ F and gentle breezes from the south.  I'll give you a real salt report soon after we hit the place on the morrow.

I forget if I had a separate thread for the quilt raffle so I'll use this one for now.

We have a great example of a quilt made from old t-shirts.  It's here with us -- come take a look.  I'm showing it off because we're going to raffle off chances to win one of these made just for you - with your old shirts.  It's a fine way to use a dozen or 20 old shirts that are otherwise gathering moths in those totes you've got stashed in the shop, and it's something that a bunch of you have thought of doing but never wanted to spend the $250 - 400 that it costs to have one made.

I know a lady in Mora, NM, that makes quilts.  She made this one for us - asking not just for shirts, but what color is a favorite so the binding between shirts would be the right stuff (Nancy likes green, so she used a bunch of shades of green in our quilt).  The lady cut a few little "patches" out of some of the shirts and sprinkled them, stitched nicely in place, to add some more pizzazz.  There is stitching that follows the letters in lots of the words on the shirts (you've gotta look closely to see it, but it makes for a high-quality bed spread.  Come see).

So we're going to sell up to 75 tickets at $10 each to get a quilt.  For ten bucks one of youse guys can win a custom-made quilt.  Put your favorite shirt smack in the middle (I used a SSS shirt, my 2 Club shirt, ones with Nancy and with me on 'em, etc) and other shirts you like around 'em.  It's your choice to put whatever you want where you want it.

The tickets will be available at Salt Talks Sunday evening (about 5.30-6.00 starting time, at the parking lot of the new Bonneville Museum) and from Nancy or me at our pit before then.  Come get one ( or a couple of 'em if that's what you'd like to do) and not only support landracing.com, but also get a good chance (no worse than 1 out of 75) to get your own race t-shirt quilt.  See you on the salt.
