There is a lot of old Bville on Youtube, how about we put it on the forum?

Private time after SW 1989 with the two wheeler. This was one of the first two runs when it still had the dorsal fin on it. He crashed the next day near 300mph without the fin on. We were at the 2 when he came past us with the ski's still down, the right one dug into the salt & the car/bike went vertical then slid for about 1/2 a mile. We were the second truck on the scene, Art was a bit wobbly but ok. A moment in time I will never forget.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0JiFd-efcY
The next year he was back with the three wheel version but had after-burner problems they couldn't solve. To my knowledge, he never ran the salt again.

If you notice, on the second youtube video Sid posted, the dorsal fin was rotating completely around as he started his run. I noticed it at the time and have video of it somewhere. It was controlled by some sort of autopilot device which was malfunctioning, and was removed for following runs.
His "Art Arfons" personalized speedometer was calibrated and numbered to 700 MPH. Cool operation, even his starting unit was turbine powered.

-
Ron, do you have any video of the crash? One of the guys I was with in the truck that day has it on camera but I've lost contact with him.
Sid.

Sid
I don't think so. IIRC I taped several runs or attempts from the start line and some of the starting prep. Don't think I stayed with it long enough to get the crash. My boy has some of my tapes and seems to have misplaced them. :? :? I'll see what I can dig up and look. Been a long time ago.

Thanks in advance.

Wow! That exceeds my most optimistic expectations. Thank you Dick.
But "repaired with toothpaste"?? What's that about?
Veering further off-topic, I wish I could obtain similar information about Nolan White, Al Teague and Don Vesco when they were breaking 400 mph in the 1990-2002 timeframe...
-
The toothpaste was used as a lapping compound to repair a leaking gas pressure regulator. Somehow, a valve in the regulator was scratched and wouldn't seal. Goodyear's public relations rep, Dick Ralstin, had his shaving kit in his car so we borrowed the Colgate tube to fix the problem. That was hot rodding 101.

Al is working on putting history details together, we spent a bunch of time going over this stuff recently when he came up for the USFRA banquet. At the time we didn't keep track of that stuff, we were just too busy with our eyes on the goal & making evolution changes in Betsy. I believe it was SW 1990 when Al & Nolan made their first 400 runs, Nolan in the morning & Al in the afternoon on the same day from what I remember.
Sid.

Thanks Sid. From the information available to me it is really difficult to work out what was going on in 1990.
My limited research suggests it was World of Speed where their first 400 mph runs were made. Al set top time at Speed Week at "only" 393.741 mph. Then Nolan and Al both went over 400 at the end of September and both set FIA records. There were others setting FIA records at the same meet: Rick White, Fred Larsen and John Baechtel. At the end of October Rick White also went over 400 mph. Quite a year!
Can anyone who was there confirm the above and/or fill in further details?
-
Let me interject, if I may:
It's reading topics like this -- talking about drivers cars running in the 4s -- is talking about some of the fastest speeds in history. And you folks were there.
Now - when it comes time for me to decide whether I want to go to a meet where some of those "historical" speeds have the potential to be run -- I dare not miss out. It's already cool for me to be able to think about some of the runs I've seen - fast and not-quite-so-fast -- so to turn down a chance to see more -- ain't likely to happen.
Anybody understand? :-D

It was really great to catch a glimpse of the old Wendover in the first minutes. Lots of memories at the Western Hotel and Café. Also, I forgot that Phil Hill had set those records. Pro drivers were much more versatile then, driving all sorts of venues. The salt surface looked awesome. That's pretty much how it still looked in 1970. I hope that the old Bonneville can come back again.

I happened to find this 16mm film of the Kiwis and their Vincent several years ago. It was in fair shape so I had a company restore it and put it on a dvd.
In 2005, I located this same Vincent in my neighborhood, almost 50 years from the world record setting date.
The owner graciously arranged for Russel Wright and wife to attend a very special 50th anniversary reunion of the rider and his machine. Russel in turn, presented the owner with the trophy given him for setting the land speed record. About 300 friends and fans came to celebrate the event.(http://)

Veering slightly: FS1 & NASCAR present:
"The first short film documentary, Bonneville 71, is set to premiere on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. ET during NASCAR Race Hub on FS1.
"Bonneville 71 details how NASCAR Hall of Fame driver Bobby Isaac set 28 land speed records with a banned Dodge Charger Daytona on the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1971, accompanied only by his crew members, a USAC official and a Chrysler engineer. Using the authentic No. 71 K&K Charger and featuring interviews with original crew members Buddy Parrott and Ken Troutt, the documentary pays homage to Isaac’s historical runs by revisiting the Salt Flats to shoot all-new footage down a 10-mile straightaway. A remarkable story of innovation, the short film depicts Isaac’s desire and dedication to always test the limits of speed, no matter the barriers."

TIC I wonder how many truckloads of salt they had to haul in to have enough salt to blade with a road grader like they did????
IIRC The state of Utah used to do that for us with their graders. T

Al's 400.6 mph run was at World of Speed, I think? Top Time at Speed Week was 393.xxx.
What happened on the return run? As far I can tell Al did set a couple of records at World of Speed that year, but not using the 400.6 mph run.
And for a bonus point: who else ran over 400 mph in 1990 (wheel-driven)? :-)

Don't know about videos, run was in 1991.
In 1990, Al's 389 run was the only one over 300 for the meet. No 400 passes at speedweek. Don't know about WOS.

OK, I was being a bit obtuse, hoping to tease out memories from people who were there.
My understanding of the somewhat sparse historical record is that there were three 400+ runs in 1990: Nolan White, Al Teague and one other. And Nolan's was only over a km so surprised that counts from a US perspective. :-o
It seems there was lots happening in 1990-91, leading up to Al just beating the Goldenrod speed (different classes, I know), but apart from the final 409.986/409.978 records it's very poorly documented.

Well, having missed that Nolan White did make one pass at 330.204 ( my apologies) I am going to say no. The meet was shortened by a wet track at the beginning of the week and wind at the end. AT made a 353.662( record at the time was 354.330) run on Tuesday, 8/21 and then on Friday a record at 389.372. That was a combination of 393.741 a presumed down run and whatever return (haven't done the math and it is not in the results) it takes for the above mentioned record. ( It is possible those times were reversed, the results don't show) So unless I missed something again  3 passes over 300, one record. It is interesting that in the results there is a note that says if a streamliner has shown that it can run over 350, it doesn't have to qualify for record runs. This of course was back when you had to qualify (beat existing record) and then the next AM make two passes, opposite directions, the average of which needed to be above the record to set a new one.
The Herbert-Herbert-Steen streamliner was entered in A/FS but made no runs.

Ugo Fadini, who is normally very reliable, states two records (see http://www.ugofadini.com/teaguestory.html). 389.372 (A/FS) and 387.084 mph (B/FS) which, given the information about no qualifier required, would presumably have required four passes over 300.
Thanks for looking Jack. I'm hungry for any information about the really fast streamliners in the 1990-2002 timeframe.
-
I think the 387 record in B/FS must have been at WOS. It is in the rule book from 1992 as a '90 record but I have the results from 1990 speedweek and it shows A/FS only and the data I presented. As before I might have missed something so apologies in advance. Happy to copy and share the results with you if you want. I don't have WOS data and didn't go to Speedweek in 1991 and don't have the results in my file.
-
It's hard to remember what happened & when it happened back then, we were all beating ourselves into history on & off the salt, it's like a big blur. It was tough & costly when you had to pre-qualify a blown fuel car for an SCTA record run. One speed week we made eleven passes over 350 with the B engine on 55% without even pulling the heads then me & Anthony changed to the A engine Thursday night, you just couldn't afford to run them hard!
I can't think of anybody else that was 400 capable in 90-91 than Al & Nolan. I think Vesco's still had the twin Chevy's then & Herbert Steen had carbs & solid wheels in 90, was injected on Mickeys in 91 but didn't make it to S/W, ran WOS but never went 400 at any time.
Nolan was a big piece of the history back then but I can't find any video on him to post here.
If anybody has anything........?
I think it was 90 when Nolan first ran the twin engine setup. He never had a pit area, he was like a phantom, always working out of the trailer where ever he stopped. You never knew if he was ready to run or had gone home, he would just pop up on the line.
Sid.

The third name I was looking for was Rick White, so not a third vehicle.
I think he made a pass at 402.476 mph during the first World Finals at the end of October. However if you google something like "White Bonneville 402.476" it throws up an LA Times article which credits it to Nolan. So I am quite prepared to be corrected. Anyone got the official results of 1990 World Finals??

Ab Jenkins 1933.
The 1930s were a fascinating time for long distance record breaking.
The Voisin set the 24 hour record at 113.5 mph in 1932. Ab Jenkins, John Cobb and George Eyston then raised it almost every year (sometimes several times a year) to 117.8 mph in 1933, 127 mph in 1934, 140 mph in 1935 and 157 mph in 1937. Eventually Jenkins (with a co-driver) reached 161.18 mph in 1940.
Amazingly, 161.18 mph remains a class record for 24 hours, although it is no longer the outright record.
