Title: Ohio Mile - Post your Pics, Videos and Stories Here
Post by: Cajun Kid on April 30, 2012, 10:38:26 AM
Great location,, great pits,, AWESOME track...

I heard over 1200 Spectators showed up,,, good turnout for the painfully cold and wet weather,,
It is amazing how fast that track dried with no sun on it !!!

As bad as the weather was the ECTA did a great job getting so many vehicles down course over the 2 days.

JUNE  here we come.

wow....did i say wow! what an awsome exsperience!

being i rookie / rookie , and having been out of racing for close to 7 years, my return was great. the ECTA staff is the best i have ever had the pleasure of meeting in all of motorsports, the volunteers are top notch, the balance of the organization, between the rules, the do's and dont's and the support from the staff is a great blend. there was never a question not answered, never a reason not given.  my hats off to everyone.

then there is the racers and the crews. from the minute we got there we were welcomed as if we new them forever. within moments we were old friends. i have never seen the spirit of giving so plentiful. if all of the world could take a lesson from a bunch of mixed nuts that just want to go fast, the world would be a better place!

special mention to ransom, the Jesel crew, the crew from NJ that had the turbo BSA,  brew dude and his flathead, everyone of the bike guys and gals that humored me and my stock Buell. oh just make that everyone. thank you all [including the nutty starter with the bomber hat]

well going to get a home cooked meal and relax while i make my plans to return in september.

and if anyones in the NJ area there is a AHDRA drag race the end of the month, come check out some 200mph nitro harleys, and my slow buell.

RUNT ''2662'' P/PP-1350/4

LSR racing has been a dream of mine since i was 12 years old, and 200mph is my goal I am finaly on my way.

This is the run from my little Orange bike. It is a Ninja 250 with a bored out engine and a fairing for a Harley Davidson 250 RR. It is running in the MPS/G/350-4. I got 109.5 109.3 and a 109 . something. . Not to bad for the first run with that set up. It was a little lean. I can get some more out of it.

Probably one of the moments I wont forget soon!  Fighting that 25 mph crosswind Saturday morning.  Man did I need that pass on Sunday to cheer me up as I thought I might still be having the pulling right issue from last October despite all the fixes.

I, too, WAS a rookie at this event. As Charles and Runt already said the staff and volunteers did an excellent job.  The facility is outstanding. The racers were friendly and welcoming.  And the weekend was a blast!

I made three passes in Elwood with the second being my best time 133.71MPH.  I was on target for 140 on my last pass and the dash went all Christmas tree on me and the motor went into limp mode at the half mile mark.  Turns out I blew the fuse on the injector circuit for 1/3/5/7 cylinders.  Replaced the fuse and all was good for the 400 mile trip home.

The weather, unfortunately, ruined my fun.  I don't like being cold and I hate being cold and wet. My car is also extremely temperamental when rained upon (probably why the fuse blew). I think I may try to come back in July with a racing seat and harness to try to tech at 150.  That at least will make it a little more interesting.

Don't have any pictures yet but I had to say what a well oiled machine the ECTA was and is. Can't believe with the number of entries and the weather trying to spoil the show how well things went. My best speed at Maxton was 127 mph, my best at Ohio after work on my truck which produced an extra 62 hp and a totaly different track was 133.84 which met and exceded my goal of running over 130 mph.
Hats off to the volunteers at the entrance gate, directing traffic along the pit and return road, the guys at the starting line and those ladies in the registration trailer. I thought it unbearable standing at the registration trailer for ten minutes, these tough people stood out in the elements the entire weekend.
Did anyone else have to really drive their car on Saturday am, my truck skated around on the first run like it was on ice? It was great seeing friends I made last year at Maxton and seeing the ones I made since here on the forum.

I had the same issue with the bike.  The track has a lot of oscillation and with a stiff front suspension it gets very interesting, very quick.  On the fast end everytime I would open it up with the nitrous going, I "oscillated" the front end off the ground resulting in the crosswind blowing me off line with visions of cones incoming. When I backed off to get the line back, I would get head shake.  Open it up to get rid of the shakes and the process would start all over again.  Finally just gave up about 300 yards from the timing traps.  Working on a new front end setup for June ..........

The course is concrete poured in sections. It is flat but each section dips slightly at the seams. On a rigid framed motorcycle it is definately noticiable.

My memory is not so great, some of you I met at Maxton a couple of times last year and the volunteers I got to know especially the starting line crew and I communicate with some of you. Some names that are used on the forum I cannot place with a car. What cars and owner/drivers won the Top Speed Challenge and approximate speeds. Did the 59 Jag break the 200 mph mark he has chased so long. I had read the article in Hot Rod a year or two ago and I know how close he has come and about the mechanical failures he has had and I visited with him on Friday as well as the Geezer crew and had communicated with Mr. Turner during the winter but I don't know what kind of speed they ran. I visited with Mr. Venable and know he fell a little short of completing the first leg of his trifecta but I bet he gets it in June. Met and talked with lots of others, the guys from Cape Cod with the super nice 79 Camaro, the gentleman with the fast red Mazda that had chute problems on his first run and Dave Grey with th 56 Corvette, he and I belong to a Corvette forum, but others I can't put cars with names and did not hear how fast anyone ran because I sat in the truck all day Saturday.
One other thing, someone suggested I bring a camera and take lots of pictures in a thread over the winter. I have lots of Maxton pictures but my Wife got me a pretty good little digital camera and I had a 4gb card in it. I took a lot of shots on Friday and some cars I would take two of at just a little different angle, then on Saturday my Guys had the camera all day and took pictures of me and everyone else. A couple of days ago my Sister took the card to a drug store in town and I told her to make double prints. I didn't purge the pictures so now I have between 500 and 600 pictures, some of your cars twenty times!

Hello Garrell,
The Jag went 204- well deserved. We went 188,202 and 213 - Mike "The Man" Riken pulled it all together and went 215 for the win in super street. I believe that the Waddel Brothers added to their jacket collection with a win in real street. I know the KT came and grabbed them for the awards presentation. There was a fast Gremlin lurking around, as well.
We're working now to get the rear end of the Geezer 2 planted much more firmly to the pavement to take full advantage of our Baker Engineering 555 - Riken will have to work a a hell of a lot harder next year...
Congratulations to you  and your family for making your record in Ohio happen - stay strong.

Best to you,

Geo Turner

Hey Garrell - just going to give you the low-down on what happened on Sat and Sun with the Jag and the problems that surfaced that tried to keep us out of the 2-club.
Changes to the Jag this year included removing the torque converter from the turbo 400 to improve efficiency and a #6 nitrous line to replace the #4 to improve flow to the solinoids. With the converter removed you must be pushed off the line in neutral and then shift into 1st when you hit 10-12 MPH. We found out early on the golf cart had just enough nads to push the Jag up to speed for a push start. Well that was fine till the golf cart shredded the drive belt. A ph call to NAPA and 79$ later we were back in business. Then on Sat morning as we were on our way to line up the engine kicked back and broke the starter! It took us all morning to find a starter and was fortunate enough to find a fellow racer in the pits that had an extra mini starter. So we were lucky to get our 175 pass in on Sat. I was suprised how slow the car accelerated in 3rd but with the converter removed you gain 21 MPH which dramaticly changed the gearing. I was hoping for 200 on the motor but was geared to tall. I run a 2.56 in the 12 bolt and should of changed to a 2.73 when I took the converter out. That left Sun to make a nitrous pass. Knowing that the lines were long and the chance of rain off in the distance I decided to change the nitrous setting from 150 hit to 180 hit knowing that I would have only one chance to break 200. We pushed off the line and car accelerated fine through first but when I went to 2nd it just free reved to the rev limiter - I shifted from 3rd - 2nd-3rd-2nd then realizing there was no 2nd shifted it in 3rd, turned on the nitrous at 2900RPM and let it eat for the rest of the mile! The tach said 5900 when I went through the traps and knew that I was probably shy of 200. Then my Dad met me at shut down with the news of 204.9 - man was I happy!!!
I really thought the time wasted going back and forth with the shifting cost me any chance of exceeding 200! So finally after several years and broken and melted parts we achived our goal!!

Hey JAG59, the article in Hotrod about all the broken engines, transmission, etc. was heart breaking enough and you had tried for three years I think right up through the Oct. meet at Maxton. I was telling my guys your story on the 12 hr. trip to the track. Enjoyed meeting and talking with you.
Sure hope the prize money pays for all those parts?

Hooley most of us budget guys have been to hell and back trying to break the 2.  I was ecstatic to see the Jag to go through over 2.  Imagine how fast it would have gone with 3 gears working.  Congrats.  Hooley, your car is awesome.  I was trying to explain it to my engine builder, and it took a picture for him to get it.  Do you run a radiator in a box?  I felt bad every time you got the line there was some ridiculous wait, it just sat there and chugged away, then ran like stink.  Any damage to the car?  Glad you're ok.
Title: Re: Ohio Mile - Post your Pics, Videos and Stories Here
Post by: Hooley on May 11, 2012, 10:53:09 PM
David,
There wasn't any damage to the car. We changed to alky last fall and lost an engine. We now have a good handle on it .
I know adding weight doesn't seem right but it does when you spin the tires. There was an extra 800# put in after last fall.  At Ohio 1st gear would still break them loose.  You know we didn't always have this blown engine. For the build and yearly progress you can check out Sumner's web site   http://purplesagetradingpost.com/  There is a lot of land racing on there to look at, too.

We don't run a radiator, instead there is an 18 gal. water tank in the passenger area. We did this to keep the front end closed up. We are thinking about putting one for the mile runs. It will be easier to cool the engine faster between rounds. With the alky it isn't building much heat like gas did.

Setting at the line wasn't hurting anything but I was afraid it would run out of fuel. I think they were getting the catch nets up for me.  hehe

                               Hooley

David, thank you for the kind comments about the car. The Studes have been my favorites since before I could drive.

Thanks Hooley for the hospitality in the staging lanes - my dad ( Chuck) and I had a lot of fun talking to you - your a genuine nice Oklahoma racer! As always the people you meet at land speed racing events are the coolest people in all of motorsports and look forward to every event we attend! Can not say enough for the staff and there hard work to pull off the first Ohio event - went very smooth despite the weather. Everyone has been very supportive on the effort to break 200 and really appreciate the encouragement and help from friends and family along the way to keep me motivated! To do this alone is not possible and with the nice people you meet along the way has fostered new friendships that last a life-time! One more item checked from the bucket list but will always continue land speed racing as long as there are records to break! Thanks again Kris.
