I have read about a lot of you doing teardowns and rebuilds during the winter, new carbs, turbos, dyno time and even wind tunnell time and I hope all of you are ready because the time is almost here. Some of you have set some lofty goals and some participating in the Hotrod Top Speed Challenge and I wish safety and success for everyone. On a smaller scale my truck went into a LSX performance and tuneup shop three weeks ago for 1:8to1 full roller tip rockers, behive valve springs and for dependability heavy wall pushrods, cnc ported throttle body and a dyno hp tuneup for an additional 62 hp. Because of my Parkinson's desease and Rheumatoid Arthritis and the related pain on such a long trip this might be my last event, might be, I have some personal goals I have set for myself also as part of my continueing recovery from a heart attack and three strokes that I was supposed to have never recovered from. So for myself and all competitors, crews, volunteers I hope the rain holds off and the wind is good for all of us.
Looking forward to seeing all of my LSR friends in three weeks.

Hang in there Garrell. Many people support you.
I hope you have results that deeply satisfy you.

Best of luck to everyone. Our ZX-6rr is back together and looking strong after Texas. The ZX-10R will get its initial runs of the year in Ohio. It isn't complete, but a couple of parts and a few days away from it. The rider on the other hand suffered a riding injury (neck/upper back) and if it was baseball would be on the 15 day DL (disabled list). We'll just call it DTD (day to day). I expect to be there and just fine. See you all then.
-
You are supposed to save your riding for the track ... What bike did you hurt?
Joe
-
Pardon me for going a bit off track -- but Max just sent a note saying he probably won't be at the first Wilmington event after all. His son will be getting videotaped by the local tv station as the boy's room gets one heck of a makeover - and Max is to be there to provide support and therefore - can't go to Ohio.
Dang - he's got the audio equipment ready to go, too. next time for sure!
Back to our regularly scheduled topic.
-
Max, sorry you can't make it but sounds like you have a big event coming up at home, consider this extra healing time. Did you lay a bike over at Texas or on the street?
Garrell
-
Let me clear it up. I didn't go down, but took a solid hit on a bike with no front suspension. That transfered to the shoulder and upper back/neck area. Needing some recovery time. We'll be there, maybe a little stiff, but who knows, maybe a bettertuck from it. :-o
As far as Texas I didn't have any issues at all with the racing surface. I only raced the 600 there and was in the 180's. I was well under control and slowed before the questionable area in shutdown.

Different Max, missed Texas.
I'm seriously thinking about dusting off my non-official landracing.com jacket & running away from the event here to the event there. Especially iffn' I can wiggle a spot near the starting line for the audio & computer gear. What do they broadcast the speed after a run on, CB or FM? What do people listening online want for background music, blues, bluegrass, nifty fifties, classical, honky tonk or Western Sahara neo-Mali desert pop?
Not sure, but I'd love to anger the little woman with a major faux pax that would get me exiled to a half year meandering route on the LSR circuit for the season, eating out of dumpsters behind supermarkets, working cross-country freeway off ramps with my cup & sign, stopping at various BofA cash machines to see if she closed my account, etc.
I just suggested I be webcast out of town AND "the little general" didn't give me the usual deadly stink eye.
We'll see.

Our Lakester is pretty much ready to go. Still running the old motor from last season which went threw a huge tuning curve burned pistons damaged valves and related damage. The old flathead Ford V-8 block is now freshend up its ready for some more abuse. Were looking forward to running on a smooth surface and hopefully the speeds will be similar to the October Maxton runs.

Took Amy's Camaro to the drag strip this afternoon for a final shake down to check out the c-clip elems and the new manual valve body in the tran. Dang if the thing is still overheating. Flipped the fan to pull thru, water pump, thermostat and everything working.will Idle all day with no problems, only over heats under load. too lean?? timing?? Oh well at least everthing else is good. the car pulls hard and a 1/4 mile aint long enough to get it into 3rd gear. We'll get it figured out.

Is the bottom radiator hose holding it's shape under revs?

We're ready to go. Chassis dyno tomorrow. Martin US 131 drag strip on Saturday. Need to stop by Meijer's Thrifty Acres and get some E85. Really looking forward to seeing everyone in Ohio. Come by the Wilmington Inn or by our pit.

For what it is worth the Wilmington long range forcast is :
Sat.- partly cloudy w/10% chance of rain. winds sse@ 7 mph, high 67
Sun.-cloudy 10% chance of rain, winds ene@10mph, high 71
A little safety factor 10% chance of rain and high temp same range on Fri. and Mon. so if any front is faster or slower moving.
*From national weather service
-
Even with a 10% chance of it. Never mention the "R" word

Everything in the local paper says 0% of precipitation, Thursday thru Saturday, High's in the low 60's and lows in the low 40's (Saturday 38!).

This mornings Wilmington long range forcast has been revised, I won't mention the change.
For us'ns that live near by, we all know that long range forecast for this area of the country is a joke. And never, ever depend on the weekend forecast. I believe the folks at NOAA in this area are off work on the weekends, so the Sunday forecast was made at Noon on Friday. Heck, most of the time looking out the window is more acurate than the "Today" forecast.
-
RansomT knows his weather! Nobody comes to Ohio for the weather, there are 3 months of summer and April is not one of them, come to think of it neither is May. The long range weather forcast will change dramaticaly every day, the short range every hour. This is why the popular advise is to dress in layers because it may be 32 in the morning and 72 at 5:00 p.m. In case you were wondering summer is June, July and August, June just does makes the cut with a 59 deg. minthly average.

I will be there... You can't run if'n you ain't at the track.
drive safe everybody,,, see ya there.

Charles,
Are you running the "C" or "E" what record(s) are you going to run on? DO you know the HP of your new notor?
Bill

Does all this talk of weather really ever stop anyone from going to the track. If you are a racer you show up. The weather is the same for everyone. If you don't go because of some "prediction" you certaintly are not committed.
Witness the entry at last years World Finals.

Geezers - Baker has it right. If the motor is gonna scatter you want it to go on the dyno. It's safer and there's still a chance to do something about it. The new power sounds great!
As far as the "R" word - 'tain't gonna happen. We simply won't allow it.

Believe it or not, other than the temp. thing, the weather down here in southeast NC is much the same, if you don't like it wait a couple of hours.Case in point, the last race at maxton!

Oddly, the temperatures have been rouughly the same down here this week. Someone confused our February for April. Call Bill Murphy and check The Farmer's Almanac - always more accurate.

We leave this afternoon and will be driving through the severe weather forecast area. It was the same way when we went to Texas last month. We drove through driving rain, wind, tornadoes and hail. Makes for an interesting trip.
The weekend forecast isn't making me smile though. 60% storms on Sat and 30% on Sunday. Hope the cross groved surface dries quickly.
See you all there.
-
Made it to Wilmington.....Yeah. 8 3/4 hours door to door. I already miss my 2 hour treck to MAxton (LOL).
This was enduring 3 1/2 hours of torrential downpours and fog from Mt. Airy, NC to Beckley, WVA and this was through the mountains.....not fun.
Talked with some of the Geezers Racing team (staying at the same motel) a little and really nice guys. I hope that Firebird really puts down some numbers this weekend.
Saw Lawson Billhardt towing a really nice looking SN95 Mustang but didn't get a chance to talk with him.
Scoped out Wilmington a little and it is a very nice town. Rode out to the Air Park and man what a facility. I did not get to the runway we will be using.....will get to see that tomorrow.
I'm here just spectating and volunteering this weekend so racers: GO FAST, HAVE FUN and STAY SAFE.

When last I checked there were 67 motorcycle entries and 108 car entries. Rain delayed racing 3 times today. A late start, then a gulley washer at 1230 then just a sprinkle at 4. Course dried right off with some help from spectators and support vehicles. Steve Van Blarcom went 212 on his second pass. Good spectator crowd with the usual ECTA great fellowship. Cold / wet still beats a day at work.

Glad to hear they got to race. Hopefully it clears out tonight.

We're all waiting to hear the drivers' / riders' perspectives on the new track! :-D :-D 8-)

-
In addition to what Joe posted, Bob Merickle in the yellow and white 689 Metropolitian was the 1st car driver over 200 @213. Then came Van Blarcom about 20 minutes later with the 212 pass. About 45 minutes later Dave Marcus, in a NASCAR Chevrolet, came out with a very impressive pass that I heard was 215. Many cars were making pretty impressive passes but the crosswind really kept many of the bikes restricted to slower speeds.
About 04:30 PM I saw Max (Moxnix) setting up so hopefully there will be audio tomorrow.
Tomorrow is looking promising so hopefully both bike and cars can hit their best.
Sorry, no pics from today as it was just to cold and windy for me to deal with.

Pete
Pete,
I cannot speak for the drivers / riders about the track but from my perspective it was really cool. With this track (runway) being only about 4 years old, it is grooved for water runoff. When standing anywhere from about 1/4 mile on, and a bike / car is making a pass, the tires just start to sing.....really cool to hear and got my attention every time. It was really more noticible with cars but the bikes would sing a little too.
I was at the timing trailer when Joe Timney came out to congratulate Bob Merickle (689 Metropolitian) on his 213 pass. Joe did ask him if he felt the grooves and Bob came back with he really did not notice it. He said the crosswinds were more noticible and they did push him around a little.
Gregg
-
John,
I saw Hooley make 2 passes, 1 from the starting line and one from about the 3/4 mile. Sorry, but I did not get times on either of thoes runs. It was really cool to see the 974 in person and making passes as I remember the build from several years ago.....REALLY COOL CAR!!!!
-
This place is awesome.. The starting line paint is a bit slick,, I planned to let the push truck get me past the paint before I launched,,, but I got impaitient and nailed it to soon,, as usual I spun pretty good in 1st gear,,, but the new tires (even in damp 40 dergee temps) hooked and booked better from 2nd on,,, got up to 187 before the 3/4 mile marker.. rolled back to maintain speed then had to let off and pull the chute 3oo feet before the traps to keep from exceeding the 175mph tech limit on first runs.. I went thru at 184.96xx...
I never felt the grooves,,, but the crossing tail wind had me tugging the wheel left into the wind,,, all good ,, the Stude had good manners,,, the shorter shutdown posed no problem,,, I had to let off the brakes and get back in the gas to clear the track at the end,,,
I am sure at 200+ I will need to apply the brakes sooner and more,,,
I will post a video later tonight.

Wow what a place. The grooved surface had folks thinking everyone was running a blower (roots). Amy got to #4 in line at the start then the bottom fellout. That was one PO'ed teacher/redhead!! :-o. once the rain stopped the track dried quickly with a little help. then Amy got her first run in the new camaro, her first "real"race car. wooohooo. Met all of our goals for the weekend in 1 pass. Get Her her "D" license  go over 125mph - 136.4006 if you please didn't blow nuthen up  Also met alot of local folk who are reaal nice and friendly and saw some old friends as well. On to tomorrow. We will make our first run about 8:30 and Amy says that she is going to "air the car out. She feels it will do 140'ish. She should know :-D Thanks to all that made this happen
-
Frank and Amy,
Good on you guys for getting what you came here to do and sorry I missed "THE RUN".
When the bottom dropped out I went into Wilmington and did the Chinese Buffet thing for lunch. When I got back I saw cars drying the track, so I went out and joined them. By the time I did that, then get parked and cars started to run again, Amy was in that group and I did not realize it.
I look forward to seeing her runs tomorrow.
Again, congratulations

Critique of the racing surface;
Pre-stage is double line - same as Maxton - located on the taxiway for the runway, excellent concrete.
Starting line staging area is located on the runoff apron. It is big and in excellent condition. 200 x 150'.
The first 20 feet from the starting line has white painted panels that are smooth and dont have the traction that the runway has.
Racing surface (runway) 9000 x 150 feet. It is crowned in the center and has 1/8" grooves 2" apart that run from side to side entire width and carry the rain away from the center. The condition of the concrete is pristine. There is sufficient shutdown if you dont run long. Because it is concrete it is not perfectly smooth but it is close to it. You dont feel the surface irregularities on a rigid frame motorcycle. From the start to about the 1/2 mile it appears to be level or slightly inclined and than it drops off and descends slightly to the far end. Towns people are nice and appreciative for our presence. Good racing surface and nice venue.
-
Wow, this is a great venue. And an easy 6.5 hour drive from home. Neither of my aircards would connect, so I ran down to a phone store and got a mobile hotspot for tomorrow, after I watched the afternoon runs. I'm not sure when the gates open Sunday morning, but I brought 4 laptops with mixing software and will probably just broadcast CB Channel 1 from the timing tower. I'll make a note here and on the ECTA facebook page when it's going.
Meridix is the webcast site, search Landracing, or whatever, link will be Wilmington Opener.
I really like that "best looking Metropolitan in the world."

Got fiebird there and first license run yesterday at 146 + it's the white B/GC. Had some water in oil with no damage; second license runs in June. (funny how you get smarter with age). Got yelled at by Keith for blowing the tires off in low gear and then some advice on rolling the car out. (thanks Keith!) Got oriented to the track real well making 15 laps or so drying it. we will be ready for June . Great time had by all and so cool to see the people and cars that we read about all the time. congrats to Hooley on his 222 pass1

Yeah, Hooley through the lights at full tilt was a site to see.
I'm done. I was getting output, per the webcast manager, but nix on the other end, even though the other computer told me I was live. Still, what a great time and folks. Post pictures tomorrow.
Pretty good reception by the local community.
Ohio Jim stopped by, he crews on the 803 car (I think that's right) out of Shasta that runs on the salt.
Met some folks from the Sportster List that was pretty active out at Bonneville +/- 10 years ago. More later.

-
Hooley went 223 ... Steve Van Blarcom went 212 ... Nephew Joe went 145 on the GSXR 600 naked bike shake down run ... thinks he is running too tall gears ... sun came out once we got on the road - 40 degrees - cold/ rain off and on all weekend and 70 with sunshine for the ride home ... staging was 2 lanes wide for 1/4 mile - at least 4 hours, no way we could get another run ... late start today for rain delay plus one hold for rain ... yesterday there was a late start for rain plus 2 long stops for rain ... tough weather for a weekend event but have to say that the race course is excellent and responded to the drying process of being driven on by street vehicles quite quickly. The demand on the volunteers is extraordinary. Had to be 500 spectators each day.

Borrowed from roddingroundtable.com:
enjenjo: The run today was 223+, and he slid into the grass at the end of the shutdown. No damage to the car or Hooley. It sounded so sweet on this run, like George said, nothing beats an alcohol motor. It pulled strong right into the traps, Chutes came out, I turned away, and George was the one who saw him slide into the grass. Fortunately he missed all the lights.
Friday I attended the rookie orientation. We sterted out at the starting line, then went down the mile to the traps. I was riding with the chief steward, and he told them several times if they had a problem, go to the left, as going to the right would tear up the lights, and piss everyone off.
So as we are driving to the end of shutdown, the timer came over the radio, and said one of the rookies cut through the grass to the right, on a minibike, and caught the wires, tearing them up, and dragging the lights into the grass. He was fit to be tied, and if he could have identified the culprit, they would have been ejected from the course.
GPster: As near as I can relate what Hooley said. Both cutes deployed but one of the got tangled up and wasn't working. The car was pretty well slowed down and Hooley couldn't remember if he should turn left or right if he had trouble. So he just split the decission and wet to the grass because he wasn't going tha fast. I don't think he felt the shut-down area was to sort because he was thinking about coming back with the Bonneville gears in the rear end. Over 8,000 RPM on the motor through the traps. Watching from the stating line there wasn't another car there that looked as good vanishing out of sight. GPster

We just got home, left Wilmington at 1:30p. 10 and a half hours in a tin can,God theres got to be a better way..... Actually not bad but for those big bumpy things we had to cross. more tomorrow. must sleep. :-D
-
When Hooley went through the traps he pulled the chutes right at the line. One chute didnt blossom and he went long. He went just off the end. They rolled CFR only because he chose the left side which wasnt a bad choice given that there is structural mounted lights in the middle which would be the wrong choice. No harm to either the vehicle or driver. "Any landing you walk away from is a good landing."

I'd rather be racing than working - ANYDAY.
Curiously it was dajavu for sunday, Amy about #4 in line and the rain let loose for about an hour or so. We particapated in the track drying cruz at witch point Amy was going through her full course routine on each pass so she woukdn't miss any thing. She made her second pass with a slight stumble at the start - my fault, still don't have the carb set up right - car pulled strong and straight. I asked Keith T. at the timing trailer what her speed was and he said 147.XXX. I bout fell over, then we got to the timing tent and got the slip and it was 137.8xx. Old guys hearing I think. Anyway bumped it 1 mph is good. All of the "guys" kept telling us the camaro is a 150 car. I believe them. Now to work on the Areo's and tuneup. Thanks to all that helped make this a special weekend for Amy and me and thank to the town of Wilmington for the great hospitality.
Frank. Video to come....???

Could someone please post the actual link to the FB page? For some reason I can't find it (I'm not a heavy FB user, lol)
It was a fun event, a bit cooler and wetter than desired, but fun all the same. Congratulations and thanks to everyone who worked so hard to get this event organized.

We got back from Wilmington about 11pm last night. With the exception of the temp and the intermittent rain, the event
was very successful. We got 4 runs in (2 each day) and was able to run our 56 Corvette 186.51115.
The car worked great and we were happy with the results. Maybe a gear change will be in order for next event!
I don't think that ECTA could have picked a better location to have the event. The Wilmington community welcomed us with open arms.
Thanks to the organizers and all of the volunteers that made this a great event.

Best one mile speed ever for our Karmann Ghia. 142.72mph running in F/CPRO with our G motor. Had a good weekend and really like the new location.

Health was well during entire trip to and from and entire time in Wilmington other than no sleep but I am very used to that. One hour after reaching home on Sunday night had an episode where I could not talk for around fifteen minutes then was okay. My goal was to improve my speed to over 130 mph with track and modifications since last Oct. in a 5400 lb. truck. Ran 132.27 in C/PP and 133.824 in B/PP so I was very thankfull for being at the event and exceeding goal. Met lots of friends I made in Maxton and on the forum and other than a little rain and bone chilling wind the entire weekend was a blessing for me.
Oh, also had the honor of being the first participate down the track and thanks to all that tapped on the window or opened the door to wish me luck and offer congrats. can't repeat here what Al told me not to do!

Garrell, It was good to meet you at the Ohio Mile. It is always fun to put a face to a name.
I am glad that your truck met it's expectations and your health was good during the meet.
We sere able to get a run of 186 mph in on Sunday afternoon and would have liked to try another
run, but time ran out.
I hope to see you at the next Ohio event.

Congratulations Dave, wish you could have made another run. Do you think you can run 200 mph with better wind conditions and tweaking after the runs you got in last weekend.
You know Forrest ran I think in the 160's in his 56 Corvette at Bonnevile with a 265 ci. engine and Chevy intake, carbs and cam. I have got his results hanging on my wall of shame in my shop, I will look tommorow and check his speeds over five years in the Corvette and 56 Belair. I can't remember what he ran in the Belair at Maxton.
It was great to meet you as well and I always am interested in how a Corvette runs.

Ohio mile is way nicer than Maxton in my mind. Just a bit further for me from S Jersey but worth it in spades.
I felt they could up the entries to perhaps 200, add a gate for spectators, and do something to keep the fans in on what is going on, maybe a local radio station or the like?
I'll be back! Curious as to the input of other fans.

We (the formal we of this site's owner and his faithless amateur audio wonk, me) are in communication about a low power FM transmitter and directional antenna aiming up and down the course from the timing tower, broadcasting the car number and speed from ECTA's CB channel with us adding background music or other stuff to anyone with an FM radio in their vehicle or a portable FM receiver. We'll see.
