Title: electric (or whatever works) fuel shut-off for motorcycles
Post by: 2stroke on January 21, 2012, 12:35:30 PM
Having never gone land speed racing, I'd like to be able to run my modified bike (Yamaha RD400) in both gasoline and fuel classes.  As it uses a standard gasoline tank with gravity feed to the carburetors, how do I go about putting together a handlebar mounted fuel shut-off system?  Thanks to any and all for your assistance.

The pingel fuel shut off switch is simple and works ... they are not shy about the price ... Joe

Hi 2stroke. Welcome aboard. RD400 is a perfect bike, where are you located?

The 1/4" orafice seems kinda small for fuel...

Saltwheels,
Attaching with a nipple shouldn't be a problem as long as there is a bung in the tank for it.
Vibration could be an issue if the nipple is too long.

Ol38y,
1/4" is larger than the factory valve [350cc] and I was considering using two of them.

 Thanks for the input, Don

I hope the web elf dosn't nail me for using nipple and bung in the same sentence. :-D

Nah, the words are fine in this context -- but your spelling did catch my eye.

Am I missing something humorous or are we intentionally delaying the response...you only need the ignition cut-off on the handlebar but you need to be able to cut off the gravity feed while seated on the bike?

In SCTA at least, on a fuel bike you must be able to shut off the fuel from the bars...

I think you are confusing gas class rules with fuel class rules ...

OK...Missed that but I still believe that the bikes I looked at only had a remote kill for the nitrous and not the main tank which was still only via the petcock.  I didn't look at it that close but I just don't remember seeing a remote mechanical for any gravity feed tanks.

You may not have seen them but they were there in fuel class.

If you are currently using a Pingel Guzzler you can send it in to be converted to a shut off handle bar style and save a substantial amount, I was told yesterday that turn around time is only a few days.

This is the Pingel petcock I have mounted to my RD400 tank. The release lever is mounted to the left side handle bar.

How does this Pingle operate?

To set on open, turn the butterfly on the valve body and push the handle bar thumb switch closed. The cable has a brass ferrule that drops into a recess on the valve body. This holds the spring loaded valve in the open position. When you thumb the switch it pulls and withdraws the cable and the valve springs to closed positon.

I think it is the Yamaha that is causing confusion for Vinsky. This should help:
