Title: Bill Warner crashes
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on October 21, 2011, 12:51:34 PM
We just heard that Bill crashed at the Texas Mile a little while ago.  Past the finish, running 238 with 20 MPH wind blowing.  Put it down on the left side, and appears not hurt bad but riding the ambulance to hospital to be checked out.  I hear further that it's windy there.

Fill in details as you get them -- and send good thoughts Bill's way.

I edited this to remove the "20#" and modify it using later information.  Thanks.

Slim the way I read it, there was a 20mph wind. From what I can tell from Face Book it looks like he will be ok. He's got some rash and is being taken to the hospital as a precaution. Don't qoute me on any of this though. This is just the bits and peices I can put together.

Running in the wind/cross wind etc. is never a good idea on two or 4 wheels. Anything over 6-8 mph can be felt and on two wheels even more so. Hope Bill is OK, get offs at any speed can hurt.

20lbs of boost on that machine is a tremendous hp capable of much more than 238....likely that the
238 was after slowing down....hoping for more details...ie we dont know if wind was a factor or not....

earlier the shake down run a note was made about a dip in track etc...

also...wind doesnt effect all vehicles equally...many two wheel machines have run very successfully
in 6-8 side winds.......others may have trouble with 6  mph headwind etc.........

additionally if running in wind is "never" a good idea....officials  let folks run at double the 6-8
if thats what they choose....ie sw return runs that very windy morning...

So glad the news is good. I was scared of what I might find after seeing the brief note on the Ohio Mile site.  Get well Bill!

Glad he is 'OK', $%*! scary.  Walt posted that the bike looks OK too, slid on left side only.

The latest is; four broken ribs, lightly punctured lung, some tendon damage on left ankle, couple af broken bones in his left hand, lots of road rash but not real deep. Monday they willo operate to repair the tendon and broken bones. The bike is not hurt bad.

Bill said " no F--- way that was only 236. I saw the run, it was accelerating at an incredible rate once in third gear. We will see when they read the data.

very interesting regarding the clocks.....

a very small mis-adjustment in timing eyes for a 132 ft
exit trap to make a big difference in measured speeds....

not sure how often their clocks are checked....

Glen etal......how often are the scta timing equip. checked and what exactly is
checked for calibration.....?.....

Joe, the SCTA / BNI clocks are certified each year. The timers go to a standards lab and run for 24 hours to assure accuracy to 7 dec.points. The lakes clock is certified at the beginning of the season and has a back up clock in case there is a problem/question.

A certificate comes with each unit and is on file at the lakes/salt as well as well as FIA/FIM/AMA during their events.

The timing traps on the salt are surveyed by Bingham Engineering out of SLC. The lakes 132 ft. trap is measured by tape for length, width, and diagonal two ways. If the wind is blowing they are re measured to assure as the tapes can move and this is done in the early AM when it's calm.

The Rice Bros. have their own laser surveying equipment but for the salt it is contracted out as I mentioned above. Hope this makes sense. The battery voltage is also checked for each sensor @ 12.4 VDC If they drop to around 12.0 they are replaced and charged.

It seems Texas had clocks and a lighted speed display at the 1/2 mile and this is where Bill's 238 mph showed. There was no time for the mile but the timer thinks it can be retrieved. 238 is about right for a 270+ mile run so we will see. This is second hand information but from reliable people. I talked to Bill today and he is really beat up but still up beat. Already plotting and planning.    larry

thanks for tidbits Larry.....

guess im wondering why when a record setting guy like Bill...runs the whole mile...there was
no mile time given..?...  wasnt the mishap after the lights...?

TFA photog was at the mile, saw bill wheelie a bit maybe 500' from traps, recover and come boiling thru the end on throttle.  Photog got seq of 6 pix of the traps one with Bill right at the 1 mi marker no issues.

The displays show 1/2mi results, then 1 mi results.  only one number was apparently shown.
Spectator told me it was 1/2 mile.

Anyone who watches those cop/law TV shows knows witness reports are all over the map.

How fast was Bill going?
maybe we'll find out, maybe we won't

Bill has an onboard video of the run. It did wheely before the traps but it settled down and he completed the run. The bike flopped over on its' side as he was slowing. The video will show what happened and end all speculation; we all have to wait until Bill recovers. I know my thoughts about the accident were wrong. Now on to the timing mystery.     Larry

Just so relieved to hear Bill is OK. That had to be one heck of a get off.
Best wishes to Bill and his support crew.

Those who know Bill know him as... a humble and proud guy who would do anything for you, eager to help, yet reluctant to ask for help. What started as a few of us close to Bill helping out a friend in need has expanded as word leaked out of the huge financial burden his injuries have caused. There is a paypal account set up through Trillium Muir- trilliummuir@hotmail.com for anyone that wishes to contribute. I thank you in advance for your kindness.  Written by Scott Horner
