Title: LTA Rule Change
Post by: blackslax on August 18, 2011, 01:17:05 PM
The LTA has decided to reinstate the requirement for the safety wiring of oil filters.

A sweeping of the track after the 2011 Maine event turned up 2.  So, effective immediately, oil filters will need to be safety wired.

Joe Daly mentioned that K&N makes filters that have a threaded bung.
Also, a radiator hose clamp can be placed around the filter and then be wired off.

I'm just curious...do you mean that people left them at the track...or are you saying that they came off of the vehicles during operation? If they came off during operation they should have been accompanied by a lot of oil.  :-D

Spoke with Tim earlier and said Loring Developement Assoc (landlord) swept the course and return road and gave Tim a box of parts the came off the vehicles on the course or on the return road ..

Well, no matter what the case...there is definitely no reason for anyone to leave that stuff behind at the track. We all need to keep in mind that we are guests at the facility.

One of the filter was lost by a racer that told us and it happened on the track and or return road.   The other was not reported.  As for oil down, that was one of the reasons we kept stopping saturday, stuff kept breaking.

I remember the kid reported his missing.
to  have that second oil filter not reported is small time.-- I'm sure more than a few people knew that filter was missing.

good to read wire is going back on the filters.

I picked up a 10mm bolt in my left front tire on my dually tow rig (had to happen on return road)  brand new tire only 10,000 miles on it and had to spend $225 to get a new Tire in Bangor.  Stuff happens... we all are responsible for policing the track, pits and return road,, as well cleaning up our pit area before we leave.

See you all in September...

Here is the verbage for the rulebook.

3.Y    OIL SYSTEM:
Engine oil system must have filters, either mounted directly to the engine or remotely mounted, safety wired to ensure retention.  The filter end may be fixed in place by the use of a filter with an integral stud or bung, or by  wrapping the filter with a hose clamp. The attachment point may then be chosen as practicable to ensure that the filter is secure. Metal wire or strap is required.

you may want to consider different wording  as it applies to bikes.  The way the proposed  rule reads i would have to add a filter to a bike that never had one.  I have a bunch of older bikes and the one I am building for next year never had a filter. ( mid 30's harley) A lot of the mid sixties small displacement or 2 stroke bikes never had oil filters eg my 65 honda cb160.   Maybe the bike rule could preface by stating: Bikes with oil filters...... then on to the safety wire portion   food for thought.
