Is there more pavement now than ever before?

Yes 6 of the 12 miles are now pavement, the plan is to have it all paved before next years event.

Here is a course map they have been paving the road in segments from the top and from the bottom. Right now only the middle 6 miles is still unpaved.

I wouldn't be too quick to compare past records with this present record run; the course has been steadily improved to the point that former Pike's Peak racers like Ak Miller probably wouldn't recognize the road as it is now. This is not to take anything away from the superb run that was just made, its just that comparing the run times are like comparaing apples & oranges.

I agree that the coarse has changed a lot over the years and the surface is not the same but every time someone came close to the 10 min. time there was always something keeping them from breaking it. Almost like a curse?? I was going to the race 25 years ago and they were almost as fast up the mountain then as they were the last few years.
A true test of man and machine for sure.
