Is there any chance of this car running in August 2014?

The Volks guys tend to run in September during the World of Speed.

The car is not going to run on the salt to protect the uncoated alloy body. The builder plans to leave it in a bare form so the craftsmanship required to construct the car will be visible. When finished (hopefully this year), the car will be raced on the pavement at the Wilmington, Ohio, ECTA events. The car will be brought to Bonneville for a September WOS Bonneville event when complete but only for display. The best we can hope for is that once there, salt fever will overcome any reservations they might have so we can all enjoy seeing the Type 64 heading down the long block line.

Sorry folks. Rearranged my Photo Bucket pics and most my photos disappeared. Here is a redo of the latest one.....................................Burly

INTRODUCTION:

A crew of four North Carolina craftsmen have been building the body, chassis and engine for what is a recreation of the most beautiful Volkswagen ever crafted, the infamous 1939 Volkswagen KDF Type 64 (aka Type 60K10) Berlin to Rome racer.

This very special project began almost three years ago and is now 80% complete. The chassis is rolling and the front and rear windows were recently fitted.

The car will compete in the 36hp Challenge Unlimited 36 category and the teams goal is to capture the fifty one year old record of Dick Beiths Pepco supercharged belly tank racer (aka lakester). Minimum speed goal is 130 miles per hour against the 51 year old record of 129.68 miles per hour.

Wolfsburg Wests Okrasa style heads will be part of the potent big bore 36hp engine being developed to meet and then exceed their goals. Our "1" Club hats are off to Bruce, Dave, Whitey and Elbert.

UPDATE:

It has been a couple of months since we first introduced the Type 64 project being crafted in North Carolina for the 36hp Challenge. Below are some new photos showing the progress to date. The world is watching as this team continues to create a very special reproduction of the 1938 Volkswagen Type 64.

Stay tuned to these pages for more updates and photos as they become available. For more info about this Type 64 and the VW Challenge go to https://www.facebook.com/groups/36hpvw.challenge and "Friend" the 36hp VW Challenge.

Lookin' good fellas......................

G'day Challengers

After receiving the Fast 8 Bugs history the other day Steve Madoski wrote wondering what the Fast 8 Ghia's were. Good question and here is what I found in my research. This is the list of the eight fastest production bodied land speed racing Karmann Ghia's over the past five decades. Production bodied means no aerodynamic assists such as wings or spoilers to aid stability.

1987   Larry Monreal.................68 Ghia  1915cc Turbo......167.480 mph
                                                             Bob Godfrey Car Craft motor
                                                             5 Speed transaxle

1976   Ray Filteau/John Weston..64 Ghia 1900cc Turbo......152.372 mph

2012   Tom Simon/Britt Grannis..70 Ghia 2332cc Carb.......150.343 mph
                                                            Hart/Adragna Motor

2013   Zach/Talor Burns.............74 Ghia 2012cc Carb......146.909 mph

1979   Mike Manghelli/Brehm......56 Ghia 1980cc Carb......144.00 mph
Sorry, no photo's available in Production trim with bumpers!

2006   Rick McLean/Boelcke........68 Ghia 1967cc Carb......140.417 mph

1969   Al Nichols/Veldman..........56 Ghia 1900cc Carb......134.32 mph
Note: Front air scoops were allowed in SCTA Production in 1969

2013   Tom Bruch/Anderson.......69 Ghia  1378cc Turbo....128.939 mph

Get ready for World of Speed in September. Gonna be fun.........................

G'day Challengers

One of the most asked questions I get is what is the record for a stock bodied Volkswagen Beetle (Bug or Super)regardless of the type of VW engine powering it? Up until last week, the Hicks/Forlano Beetle was thought to be the fastest VW with a top speed of 132.100 miles per hour at El Mirage Dry Lake in California. Exciting new information came my way when I was able to talk with Mike Fischer who crewed for Dean Lowry on his last VW racer, a 1973 Super Beetle he too raced at El Mirage. On their first trip to the desert, the Lowry/Fischer VW (which would use a Herrod's Helper rear wing in all later runs!) went 133.062 miles per hour making it the new king of production bodied land speed racing Beetles. Mike by the way will soon be joining the VW Challenge with a beautiful new LSR Ghia! The photo below shows Deans Super Beetle at a event with a wing now attached that allowed him to reach over 141 miles per hour. Sadly, Dean passed away shortly after that final run without ever finding the true potential of the car.

Also below is a list of the "FAST 8" production bodied Beetles and surprisingly, Dean is also at the other end of that bracket with his 1966 Bonneville top speed in the EMPI Inch Pincher at 125.86 miles per hour.

Here is the list of the eight fastest production bodied land speed racing Beetles over the past five decades. Production bodied means no aerodynamic assists such as wings or spoilers to aid stability which becomes a huge problem when Beetles reach the 130 mile per hour range.

1997      Dean Lowry/Fischer.......73 Super Beetle    2332cc F.I........133.062 mph
                                                                            Revmaster Motor 5 speed

1991      Hicks/Forlano...............61 Bug                 2234cc Carb......132.100 mph

1995      Bob Stahl.....................65 Bug                1976cc Carb......131.582 mph
                                                                           Type 4

1992      Burlile/Hart..................74 Super Beetle    2378cc F.I........131.296 mph
                                                                           Manghelli Motor

1969      Pete Barker..................68 Bug                 1982cc Carb.....131.100 mph
note: Scoop under the front was a "legal" BNI Production rule in 1969!

2013      Nigel Wood(England)....73 Super Beetle     2666cc Carb.....131.000 mph
                                                                            Type 4   5 speed

2011      Bruch/Anderson...........66 Bug                  1378cc Turbo...126.23 mph
                                                                            36hp Bruchrasa S/P

1966      Dean Lowry/Empi.........56 Bug                  1941cc Carb....125.86 mph
             "Inch Pincher"                                           40hp Denzel D/P 5 speed

A second one is supposedly being built (and it's in Washington!) so maybe the lonely T3 will soon have company?

Actually there are two coming out of Washington this year.  I'll be trying to gain entry in the 130 club in my Square.  The owner of the other type3, a Fasty, is also going for the 130 club too.  Type3s will be fully represented this year! grin

ACTG, are you talking about Mike Sill? I did not know he was that far along as he has been very quiet as of late. If you will PM mwe with your email address and details of your Squareback, I will get you on the VW Challenge Enews list. Please also sign up for the VW Challenge FaceBook page and post progress reports of your build.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/36hpvw.challenge

Glad to have you coming to Bonneville this year in September. It is going to be a "good" one.....................................

Yes, Mike.  I've got a build thread here:  http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=495312  Though I have not yet disclosed on there or anywhere other than here that Bonneville is a destination. . . grin

I don't do Facebook. I'll just PM you my address.
