ran like never before in practice today - we are "on" tomorrow!

Jasmine going by the team;  I tried the "panned" speed look but at 24 mph it put car and background in focus!

Cars are on the way back - we flew back yesterday.   the final results are:

ShopGirls 4th place in the Diesel Prototype category with 520MPG (+10.6%)  1st-1290MPG; 2nd-703MPG; 3rd-683MPG.  Yet the Girls won again top honors int he safety award = $1000 check!

UrbanAutos 2nd place in the Diesel Urban Concept category with 231MPG (+24.2%)  1st-489MPG.

1st photo shows our urban car in front of the staging lane - diesel winner is the 3rd car, a small, half our weight little single-seater roadster from Louisiana Tech. I hope Shell is adding a mandatory 2-seat requirement for 2013, yet nonetheless this competition has shown we need more sophisticated cars and engines in order to stay competitive.  You see the girls lime green car on the track in the upper left.

2nd photo - Tim and Hunter changing sprockets; "Philippe the Firewall" our mascot grew a mustache while in Houston.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spring Break now - our next events

April 14 - PACCAR Technical Center Open House; we will be displaying both cars next to the ones from Western Washington University's Vehicle Research Institute and the University of Washington

April 22 - both cars for Earth Day at the Future of Flight Museum in Everett

Look at our website calendar for links  http://live.gfalls.wednet.edu/ecoteams/

Of course we will be at World of Speed in September - I think the girls want to bring their car too to see how fast "Iron Maiden" will go (they reached 41mph in the school parking lot before running out of parking lot   grin

Thank you again Landracing and LSR community for your interest and support.

Michael

Michael, please pass on a huge congratulations to the teams - well played, Granite Falls.

Those are some pretty impressive mileage improvements over last year.

Any chance of either team giving my Dodge Magnum a tune up on the salt in September?  I thought I was doing well getting 18 MPG towing a race car through the Cumberland Gap and over the Great Smokey Mountains.

Again, well done.

See you on the salt!

It's been a while since our "LSR Long Tail" car has gone anywhere - today we displayed at the Everett Paine Field Aviation Day and had the chance (one gets up real early) to take some pictures with the BIG HP old iron - B-25 and P51 Mustang!

Thank you Pete, it's these kind of aircraft and their restoration that brought me to the USA - I always enjoy going to an airshow; it was great for the kids - none of them had ever come this close to vintage warbirds and aviation history.

If you had a FOLLOW ME sign on the Urban Concept rig you could lead those prop jockeys to the runway.

I wish I had known of todays event. I could have slipped into my Pink Shirt and attended.

There were some very beautifully restored aircraft and all of them in flying condition.  Today's color was orange, not pink - got a good funny shot of the boys in line for the bouncy house.  "Philippe the Firewall" is all smiles in #301.

It's been a long time since our last posting because of our school year ending and then - real summer vacation for the "Shop Teacher" !  This last Saturday both teams showed their current cars and some future car ideas at the Vintage Aircraft Weekend; then it's back to school Wednesday, classroom only, no Bonneville trip this year as any fundraising is going towards making the cars more competitive looking seriously at improving the engine and drive train, since we still have stock engines and so-so drive trains. It will require testing, testing, testing and parallel applying the learned to designing and building new cars, which may take us until the 2014 Shell Eco-marathon race. Part of that testing though is planned for the 2013 World of Speed; I will be there this weekend for WoS. Look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.

In 3 months we are off to the annual Shell Eco-Marathon again; it’s our 4th time and we are using the same cars.  Improvement focus this season is the engine and drive train.  As part of the improved air intake we are making velocity stacks; this is the 1st off prototype made from schedule 40 PVC 1.25” diameter pipe, a male form turned on a Mini Jet lathe from a 2x4 glue-up and then while spinning it at 500 rpm heated gently with a heat gun.
The exact lengths and shape has been calculated by the students for a variety of altitudes and air temperatures, using formulas found on the internet.

A small engine dyno is going to be built to test and fine tune our 2 small diesels. I might have questions to that topic in a separate thread.

Chain drive is planned to be replaced by a belt drive.

Stay tuned….
