Newbie needs help
« on: August 16, 2010, 09:55:39 PM »
Im curious is there a place on the web where newbies can go to understand designations?

IE: BGS  "Blown Gas Coupe: and the other numbers i assume are engine size? On a bike what does /4 mean? So what do all those others mean? Im sure other newbies are wondering too...

/4    means 4 cycle engine in ECTA / LTA rules ... I suggest you buy rule books ... ECTA and SCTA

To specifically answer, no, I don't think there's a place on the web where you can get a set of the rules.  The sanctioning bodies sell the rule books as a major source of income - so they do not put the rules on line.  You're welcome to ask specific questions here, and you'll probably get answers.  Yes, it's confusing to someone that hasn't spent countless hours going through the rulebooks, especially considering the differences in the way car classes are printed and the way bikes are classed.  But once you get the basics it becomes very easy.

Basic:  Car class designations begin with a letter that designates engine size - with AA being the largest engine class and K (or maybe it's L) being the smallest.  Bikes start with 50 cc and end with "over 3001 cc".  Bikes engines in SCTA/USFRA rules are the same whether 4-stroke, 2-stroke, or rotary, while the ECTA has separate classes for each of those three.

And on and on.  Order up a rulebook and start learning, and once you've got a little of it down pat -- ask for more help from us, okay?

This link to the SCTA should answer your basic questions, it's where I started.  But as mentioned by SSS, buy a rule book to get the details.

Are you planning on running at Bonneville or El Mirage (or both?).

Drop me your email address and I'll email you the Rookie Orientation booklet. It might help explain some more of the process. miriammacmillan@me.com

(Before the rest of you say it - yes, I need to get it up on the web site. Thanks to everyone for the photos though!!)

Jon,

"And on and on.  Order up a rulebook and start learning, and once you've got a little of it down pat -- ask for more help from us, okay?"

Once you think you have "it down pat" the rules change.

Maybe it just seems like it.

Dallas, you were the one and only entrant in  the Speedweek top speed contest, so it'll cost landracing.com just one racing DVD.  That's fine, although I wish there had been more competition.  Heck, I didn't even check to see if you had guessed the speeds correctly - I'll reward you just for the entry.

We've got Bonneville Wide Open, most of the recent Mark Brazeau DVDs, the World's Fastest Motorcycle, and one more, I think (but can't remember just now).  Which would you like?  And would you accept hand delivery at WoS?

See you soon.

PS  I never did get around to fetching my yearly new red hat from Allison.  If you see her - would you do your best to make sure I can get one at World of Speed?  If she's not going to be there -- howsabout if you hand carry it to me?  Thanks.

Jon
