Kinda makes you wonder with the race car on display along with chat about the event of the crash decades ago ... if a unknown person will come up and remember being on the salt that day it happened and has never talked about it ?

I talked to Butch today and he says people have been coming out of the woodwork, with stories and stuff ! A guy showed up out of the blue and dropped off a hand carved model of the car in a enclosed glass case, said he had it made back in the day , said he was fascinated with the car at the time, also left a scrap book with every auto related mag, that had an article about Athol and the car, I mean copies of 1960 Hot Rod stapled to a page of the scrap book , every article from the papers, copies of MotorTrend, other mags I haven't even heard of , all vintage stuff, plus a VHS of a film done in the day from the salt (probably 8 mm) ! Told Butch he has no kids or anyone else to leave it to , Amazing !

Butch, with all due respect; commenting on your quote about your father failing. I don't think your father failed, he was reaching for a star that inspired and consumed him. His quest took his life and denied his young family access to him; that hurts and seems unfair;he failed as a father to a young son and daughter. The inspiration to others, to learn from him, his quest, and be inspired by his actions, leads others to reach for that impossible goal. To me, when your actions inspire others and leads them to dream and act, that is a certain amount of immortality, living on through the actions of others. Most of us could only wish for such positive influence of others. Thanks for you inspiration and dedication in restoring his car that inspired so many especially in SLC and the salt flat racing community. To you for restoring "City of Salt Lake" and him for dreaming, building and trying to reach that star !!! my hat's of to both of you.

From France, I big thank you for sharing the photos of the "City Of Salt Lake" restoration, and I'll take my hat off to Butch and his crew for the great job they did on this streamliner. Well done. It's really fantastic to see that. The next step is to restore and reinstall the Allison V12 in the beast. Good luck.

I think it ended up with a Merlin in it. He started with an Allison

Sparky , very well written comments , all I can add is , Amen !
The car started out with and ended with an Allison, Athol had collected several engines , with different rotations and had a few Merlins also, ( remember this was back when you could pick them up surplus for peanuts ! )he traded one of the Merlins to a hydroplane racer out of Washington to get the Allison he really wanted. Seems the engine he wanted to run had a larger supercharger and carb, I don"t know a whole lot about this part of the story but I assume, He wanted the Allison because it was 100 % American, remember he was trying to take the record away from the British , and he probably thought it wouldn't look right to run a Merlin, simply because you would think "British Engine" !
I may be out in left field with this , but who knows ?

I believe the turn out at the first show of the completed car does in fact indicate that Athol did receive quite a bit of attention on his efforts in those days when this all was happening.

Yep, back in the day he got a bunch of ink on his efforts, and support. ( This was one of the first cars, maybe THE first car, STP sponsored, ) " local hero makes good" Too bad it ended up like it did !
Be sure to look for it in the pits ! this year ! Yeah , it's gonna be really cool!

Butch - The work and obvious emotion you and others put into "The City of Salt Lake" was evident at Speed Week. I know the footage I gave you was very brief but the car has stuck in my memory for these past 46 years since I took the shots. What a great example of hard work on a limited budget - the Bonneville Spirit. Thank you for the really great T-shirt - I'll wear it proudly. Pat Kinne
