I talked to Butch a few years ago at the salt and he told me he wanted to restore the car. He didn't have plans to run it but would like to see it in a museum somewhere. I hope his plans work out and he finds a home for it.

Please note, I was not a timer during that period of time. I did go to many of the events and saw many of the fast cars of that period. Just being there was rewarding. I was contacted by the paper and answered questions regarding racing on the salt and those pioneers.

Yeah, he's pretty good-- although I did notice one the recent Rocky R. article that during Glen's video interview he used the very common word to describe the action thoe trucks pulling the heavy sleds over the Salt to smooth and pack it -- he said the Salt "had been drug", not "had been dragged".  Gotcha, Glen - even though darn near everyone says it as "drug".

Let's see how he takes that from me, the whippersnapper. . .

Well Slim, drug, drugged, dragged or whatever. Back in the 50s the department of highways used a grader to prep the salt. So was it graded, or scrapped  and the Vesco's designed a wheel packer to compress the soft  surface and remove the moisture  by evaporation at the same time. That worked too. so call it what you want as long as it works. Besides I wasn't an English major.

I figured I'd get a response from you, Glen.  I know that Freddie and Jim, both of whom drive the trucks, describe the salt after they're done as having been drug.  So you're in their company (good or bad -- you be the judge of that).

I remember just a few years ago when the salt was not only bumpy - but hard.  So hard (I think it was at a WoS event) that a road grader was brought in to attempt to smooth things, and the grader didn't have sufficient downforce to top off the bumps -- without pushing right through the crust into the soft layers underneath, making things much worse than when they started.

I'm happy with the present situation, no matter how it's pronounced.

I'll get to it -- soon's I take care of "adress" instead of the correct version - "address" -- two "d"s, not just one.

Got you, too, Stain.

The road grader was for Speed Week.  The problem was that the operator was inexperienced, couldn't follow directions, and made a bigger mess than what was all ready there.  The owner finally had to come out and operate the equipment himself, but only after he was threatened with nonpayment.   It was a huge mess!!

The same guy didn't work for the Coddington-hired tow trucks, too, did he?
