hey,salt fever hi9gh here,was wondering what goes on in between speedweek and BUB-can you stay at the bend in the road or does it all clear out,

we enjoyed racing last year and plan to return with a bigger,better collection of machinery next time,

seeing as we have to travel from england,we thought about taking in BUB  too-was just 'toe in the watering'

so what do you guys do ?

i noticed on older motor home at the bend that didn't have bikers
in it during bub. seemed to have been there a while.

The motorhome at the bend is the security people.

BBK, you can probably stay there all year if you wanted... in fact if you leave something there during a heavy rain it may be there for quite a while.  There is no activity at the salt between meets other than tear down and set up... other than your occasional TV commercial shooting.

Between those meets is a fine time for you to explore the scenic sites around Utah and the rest of the southwest of America.  A one-day drive will get you to Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks, and you can also drive on Scenic Byway 12 -- about the best and nicest-looking road there is in the US.  Take a day from Bonneville and go to the Hill AFB museum (north of Salt Late City) and see lots of static displays of airplanes - including an SR-71.  Go see the dinosaur fossils at Dinosaur Park in the northeast corner of Utah. 

Lots of things to occupy your time between those two (or any) events.

Or, get a miner's pan, take some water with you and go prospect for gold...there's gold in them thar hills!!  Truly, also, just south of Wendover is Topaz Mountain where you can search for topaz and geodes.   If you're of a mind.

Oh, add-on  there's also the Leman Caves in Ely  those are fantastic, even for a claustrophobic like me!

And in Ely Nevada you can ride the two ghost trains, fun ride. They have a rail road museum as well. Lots to do and see in Utah as well.

We took two of Nancy's boys to Great Basin Park (Lehman caves) a while back.  Camped at 9,000 feet, and the next day went through the caves.  Nancy and I had been there once before -- the boys were fascinated.  Good reminder of great stuff to do.  As for gold -- didn't you just tell us there's a gold mine being opened 30 miles south of Wendover?  Sounds to me like there oughta be gold in the neighborhood.

With all of us helping point out stuff to do -- those Limeys will have just barely enough time to go racing!

Those things really interest me, but are probably too far out of the way. What interesting things are there on the way home going north to Seattle? I always drive straight through without stopping and know I am missing out on some good sights and activities. Gem hunting, gold panning? What?

If you're planning on staying between events, everything that has been suggested is no more than 2 hrs away.  If you head back to Seattle by way of Wells or Winnemucca, everything except the caves and Topaz Mountain are on the way.  Also, you can sight see right from the bend in the road.  I would suggest that if you travel around the backside of the mountains you take extra water and food with you, and make sure you have a full tank of gas, oh and check your spare tire too.  Cell phone service is sketchy at best, so understand you'll be on your own while out there.  If there is someone who doesn't go, give them a time frame for your return and a good idea as to where you'll be going.   During the races, if I know that someone is headed out that way, I always ask them to come back to Land's End to let me know they've returned.  It's easy to get stuck out there and is safer if someone knows that you've gone and when you will return!     It's a safety thing!!!

Good points, Lynda.  A few years ago two of Nancy's boys were visiting us during one of the events and we had enough spare time one afternoon to take them on a tour around the mountain north/west of the Salt.  We drove counter-clockwise, and about at the farthest corner -- found a 100-yard-long patch of very soft and fluffy soil/sand in front of us.  I stopped, put the truck into four wheel drive, and drove through at a fairly fast pace.  Even then I could feel the tugging and pulling as the truck wallowed a bit.  And - there's no way to skirt around the edges of the soft patch -- and there was ZERO cell phone signal there, even with the outside antenna and receiver power booster I've got in the truck.  Would have been a nasty walk back to the world.

Stuff we see often in movies and documentaries here in Aussie takes on a whole new meaning when you have been there
After leaving Jims and the San Francisco area our circuit took in Hoover dam,Zion Canyon, Bryce Canyon ,Lake Powell ,Sumners guided tour of his local area  Grand canyon, Arches ,Moab ,

Not all in that order,    packing it all into just over a week
Arrived back at Bubs quite fit and much better acclimatised for the altitude

If time ( likely ) and money (unlikely ) permits,
I'd love to do something like that.
Toured the US of A a couple of times in my distant youth.
SO much to see, so many good folks to meet.

In my dreams I buy one of these wonderful wacky contraptions on the west-coast
( no-limit gas credit-card provided by generous sponsor with unlimited fonds )



...head up into the Californian mountains and on to Las Vegas
where I win the big prize and a free stay in a luxury suite, on the first night.
On to Speed Week taking in the sights and sound,
as participating member of one of the racing teams.
A couple of weeks touring Colorado and Wyoming,
then back picking up my Indian at Salt Lake City.
Go to BUB, setting a mindblowing record.
Fly back to Copenhagen where I live for ever after
spending my prize-money doing absolutely nothing besides
building bikes and going to the Salt every year,
repeating all of the above.

well thanks for all the suggestions-some really interesting things to do there-

my suggestion of spending the time drinking beer and eating three meals a day at the excellant salt flats cafe was dismissed-until i suggested we see who could put on the most weight between speedweek and BUB....

you know how competetive us english are!

and we cant get chicken fried steak here
