Well folks, here we are... I thought last year this would not become a trilogy, but here we are again, just like the movies...
For those that are new here, you can start here:

and then proceed to here:

Unfortunately Max broke the HyVo chain that connected the motors to the clutch.  While that seems like it is not too serious, it did a lot of damage.  Just like the rest of the bike, there is not a lot of extra room in the motor for extra parts.

Here's the damage report, the chain piled up into this part of the case, broke through the top and then ran between the motor to motor gears, knocking the rear gear pin out of the case and cracking cases along the way...

Welcome back to the forum, Max, bike, and helper Stainless (not that you've been absent, but I had to include you somehow. . .).  Please keep us up to date, as you have in the past, so we can watch the excitement as it (and the bike) builds.

Thanks Jon,
Continuing the damage report we see the fault line in the cases and the leftover chain bits..
Hard to tell what came first, the chicken or the egg, but it doesn't matter, Max is working on ideas to make this area stronger, contemplating drive gears or stronger chain.

I've been over to Max's multiple times since the races to cuss and discuss the issues as well as helping clean up the scooter and trailer.  For those that don't know what vehicle we are working on, here are a couple of pictures.. Max is the guy in the black shirt.

I finally took the camera over last Friday to take a few pics before we had the entire lump disassembled.  We already pulled the motors out, stacked the jugs, pistons and heads on the shelf.  They were in really good shape.  Max's oiling plan worked well, no perceptible difference in the jugs and pistons since installed, a little combustion evidence on the piston tops and heads, but really looked good.  The new valve seals kept most of the alcohol out of the oil.

As soon as we get it a little lighter, it will be on the bench to split the cases.

Tomorrow the cams and valve train will come out, we will strip as much out as possible and with any luck we will have it light enough to lift.

 grin cheers

The fix is in!!!!

Well.  It ain't in yet, but we have come up with a fix on last year's problem.  I'll remind everyone what gave up the ghost, and that was the 1" wide HYVO chain that connected the rear engine to the clutch jack shaft.

I looked into replacing the HYVO with some sort of transmission gears, but decided that would be too much of a hassle, so it was back to trying to find a chain of adequate strength that I could make work.  Consideration had to be given to the amount of space I had to work in.

The chain chosen to do the job is:

EK 630ShB-Z Top Fuel H-D chain.

The chain measures 1.650 width.  That is one heck of a width of chain for a single row 60 chain.  The reason for the width is that they've doubled the link plates; there are two on each side of the roller.

BTW Pingel sponsors both Sam Wheeler and Denis Manning.  Pingel is the source for the EK chain.  I tried to work some kind of a deal for sponsorship when I talked to the tech guy on the phone.  Maybe they'll give the Black Lightning Project some help.  Sure hope so.  Could use it.

Recently Mike Akatiff and Denis Manning have both given me a call asking what my intentions would be for this upcoming race year.  They had to know as they are working on the publicity for the two events, The Bub Meet and the Mike Cook Shootout.  I told both Mike and Denis that I'd be attending only the Mike Cook Shootout.

Great news, Max.  I don't know if this website can do anything to help your project -- but let me know and I'll try for you.  Best --

Well it has been a while, Max is developing a plan, and I finally dropped by to look at the MONSTER CHAIN... I really didn't cap those words, the chain is really that big.

Here are a couple of shots for comparison

The roll of chain in that last shot... about $800... ouch... I guess Max asked Pingle for a break since they sponsor Denis and Sam, but he didn't make their cut  angry
Max will contact EK, the chains manufacturer later, but he bought chain to get the ball rolling

He has some sprocket modifications to make, the outside sprockets need centers like the inside ones (and yes, that is one of Patti's dish towels  shocked)

And sprocket modification in progress

Hi all, was by to visit Max again and had the opportunity to see a video made by Gerry Jenkinson, one of Max's crew from England.  Gerry joined the fracas last year to experience the salt assault first hand, he compiled a little video trailer for all to see.  It is on his website, just select the video button.
http://www.gerryjenkinson.co.uk/

He has also assembled an 18 minute one, put it on DVD and is sending a copy to everyone that donates L15 or $25 or more to the Vincent Streamliner project.  As always, Max welcomes all donations, you can donate at Gerry's site, or Max's.
http://www.vincentstreamliner.com/index.html

The cash  will find its way to the old retired guy living on a fixed income... building the twin engined Vincent streamliner.  Currently Max is planning to run at the Mike Cook Shootout.

Pictures are coming as soon as Max starts working...  grin
