Rick, Have you looked at the Mercedes turbo diesel in Jacks van? That thing seems to run pretty good to me for it's size and the engine size.

They are really tall. I guess same height as 5.9

The stock 3.9 Cummins I4 makes 10 horses over the Mercedes 3.0 I5 and has a much wider aftermarket. In my experience, the Mercedes is nothing to brag about on acceleration, but runs niceley once up to speed. They're both just about bulletproof, but the Cummins will be easier to tune.

There is a Swedish guy who has gotten great power from the 1.9 VW motor. He has an extensive build diary you can see in the "TDI performance" section on   www.fredstdi.com   There is a strong aftermarket for this engine. Hope this helps, Rick in Ohio
