For my 53 Studebaker running in Classic Gas Altered...
Can I install Nascar carbon fiber roof flaps ?
If so.. should I....
One or two and should I install on a slight angle ?
I know a year or so this was discussed,, but I am not sure who did what with the info..
A2 are you here ?
Sum ?
Hooley ?
anyone else ever use roof flaps ?
any help would be greatly appreciated.... Them new carbon fiber deals are expensive... I have a good line on a pair and will use or sell them...

Charles, being where you are, why not talk to a couple of NASCAR guys and install them the same way NASCAR does. I believe it's two different angles. There's no such thing as being too safe and you have the advantage of having access to the technology in your own back yard.
Keep up the good work. Both projects are looking great.

I am calling A2 wind tunnel today,,, they may have more data,, the aero guy at RCR has got me a set of carbon fiber flaps set aside... just waiting for install angle etc...

From what I've seen of you and your fabricators' skills it looks like you could custom make them to fit the Stude for less than the 1/2 price and they'd be easier to finish along with the rest of the roof.

I started "doing the math" and I think you are correct.. Cutting the Flaps out of the existing roof and then making the boxes and hardware may be a "better fit"..

Seems like not having side windows would create a lot of additional drag on the car at high speeds. But I think roof flaps is a good idea. |

Stan - the flaps only come in carbon (small market, one supplier). Charles - I think Hooley has one (from a Craftsman truck) on his Stude; a PM to him might get answers. There is no doubt in my mind that a flap is better than no flap. In re: modifying them- there was a lot of $$ spent on making these things work (back in 93); if you need to, check with the boys across the street from your fabricator's shop on what you can do and still have them be effective. I'll be back in town tomorrow evening (with 2 records in tow...), call if you want to discuss. vic

Yes Hooley has on flap on his car.. It is from the Truck series and is bigger than the car flaps. His is mounted square to the rear window...
We laid the car flaps on my roof and think we can fit both of them back there in a chevron angled pattern,,, thereby allowing them to deploy if the car yaw's a bit to much to either side... No just if the arse changes places with the hood...
Who, knows,,, will be talking with A2 on Monday..

I wonder if it would be worthwhile to place one under the car at the rear where it tapers up. That way if it spun, there wouldn't be a huge air scoop to bring air under the car as it goes backwards.

I think we all talked about this a year or two ago. But it was mentioned that the NASCAR cars run with a window on one side and a net on the other (right?) which would surely effect the placement and angles of their components.
Of course you don't know which window you're gonna lose first at Bonneville (or Daytona). I've seen some windshields go away which drastically effects the aero.
I guess that's why us dummies run roadsters.
