Land Speed Shootout 2009

It’s on again.  September 20th to the 26th spectators are welcome.

It starts the day after USFRA event ends.

The fastest bikes and cars will run for FIA and FIM world records.

Lineup as it stands now:

Cars:

Terry/Mike Nish

Ron Main/George Poteet

Lynn Goodfellow

Buckeye Bullet

Maybe: Burkland or Danny Boy

If you have a car streamliner capable of setting a world record of 300+ mph and would like to attend contact Mike Cook at driver598@sbcglobal.net the FIA needs to be informed 40 days before the event.

Bikes:

Denis Manning Lucky 7

Top 1 ACK Attack

Sam Wheeler’s 1100cc Kawasaki, I think I can, I think can, maybe he could

Maybe: MAX

Long Shot: Jet Bike right after the event for time only.

There is room for a couple more Bikes if you have a motorcycle streamliner capable of setting a serious world record and are interested in attending contact Mike Akatiff at MikeA@ackavionics.com an FIM license is required.

There should be good media coverage again this year.  The Discovery program from last year is almost finished and will run on Discovery Asia first.  They are negotiating with the big three cable documentary channels for US broadcast rights. The producers plan to be back this year.

And also about media coverage -- landracing.com will have the usual two crack (not crackED) reporters on the scene, bringing you click-by-click reporting on the Internet, with photos included.  We got a kick out of it last year -- reading things like "My boss is asking you to stop this stuff so I can get some work done for him" or "I've worn out the 'refresh' button on the keyboard".

Stay tuned for lots of land speed racing stuff here (as if there isn't already).  Nancy and I are staying at Bonneville for all FIVE events out there this fall - so we can provide the most complete and minute-by-minute coverage available.  Thanks for helping make it all possible (with your continuing interest and your donations, too).

I had an email exchange with Ray very early this morning ... before he went to bed ... and I can tell you now he needs all the help he can get!  LOL!  He's spending entirely too much time playing around modifying photos.  If he can get shots like he did last year we'll all be happy, attendees included.

Hope some of the car entries come better prepared - they were an embarassment last year.

I'm with Slim on media coverage - beyond of course his and his bride's no doubt great coverage on this website - it should be an attractive TV view for motorheads. And let's hope the major car mags are there.

I'd like to think it more atractive than a recent overworked hydrogen-powered run.

I'd take an embarrassment of a new unlimited, wheel driven record any time.  Ack Attack at 360 isn't an embarrassment either as far as I'm concerned.  I really enjoyed the meet ... but I was actually there.

In response to the CRITICS of my partly critical post above.

NO WAY did yrs truly infer ANYTHING about the MOTORCYCLES from last year being an embarassment. All class acts.

As far as the CAR competitors - EVERYONE knows who the two groups are that to yrs truly were an embarrasment.

However, it's their money they seem to continually P**s away and that's their privilege.

Ks Bad Man - somebody told me you and TR were schoolmates.

Hope you make the event by the by. And haul a##.

PS, I love Vincents (Along with BSA Gold Stars and 350cc Velocettes) and remember Rollie Free's runs on the Salt stimulating my youthful Landspeed interest.

And then there was Clem Johnson, whose Vincent at one time held the ET record at Colton Drag Strip (10.35, I think) and  WALKED the bike all the way back to the pits down the return road after every run -in his LEATHERS - at least the bottoms!

im often very critical.....of myself and others......

the shootout...teams who fell short.....were NOTHING
resembling an embarrassment.........this imho......

they have PROVEN their cars performance NUMEROUS
times at various LSR meets.........

then in an opportunity to simply and courageously go BEYOND the stoutest
WORLD records........

they came to the shootout.........loaded for bear.....lay it
all on the salt.......smaller speeds and records were left behind
in this ultra event.......werent even considered.....

embarrassment would mean they let YOU down........

they werent there for you.........or me...Smiley

Max has it figured out......

Stirring up a little S**t keeps the adrenalin up - and my pal Stan says I  silence topics.

Obviously not this one.

I'm not trying to offend, but why with the opportunity to set an FIA Land Speed Record like John Cobb, Goldie Gardner, Bob Summers, Elwin Teague, et al, a broken ROCKER ARM ruins your effort when you're two hours from home.

There are literally THOUSANDS of Super Comp drag racers that would have a spare in the trailer.

I definitely understand the self-critic aspect and having fabricated racing stuff since my teens (more than two weeks) I assure you I've had lots of restless nights and worrisome days.

Just amended this note -I haven't heard ALL the coulda, woulda shoulda stories, but I've heard my share.

bystander........yup a little adrenaline to fuel the fire...Smiley......

to be embarrassed would mean they represented you.....

quite the contrary.......they represented themselves as the
gladiators they were.......on the salt laying it on the line......

and you and I represented ourselves.......as the spectators who
sat home.......

of course......we might have been preparing our dreams for efforts soon
to come........none the less......they were doing battle.......and we
were sitting on the sidelines....

it might be enlightening to hear what really happened to each of these
teams.........and what amazing stories there are behind their pursuit
of speed.........as there seemingly always is........

another thread perhaps.......beyond the glory.......

The intent is NOT to compete, or even try to get similar.  If I can work it so Ray can concentrate on what he does best a lot of folks will be happy.

Hope to see some friends out there!
