I'm no engineer, but, being around streamliners and engineers awhile, I would say that you would need around 2500-3000hp (reliable hp) to achieve these speeds in the 400-450 range.  Summers Bros. was around 2400hp.  Where's Pork Pie??  The 411s setup was, if I remember right, about 2350hp each at 7500rpm. So 4700hp not withstanding drivetrain power loss to the wheels, and if everything is working just right.  I think the idea on multiple engine cars is to have enough available hp to not over stress the engine package.

I'm no expert either but willing to be it's < 2500. Hoffman-Markley went 365 with less than 900 hp per Charlie. Double the speed cube the power. If my math holds out (not likely) 450mph in the Hoffman 'liner would have been around 1800 hp?

The Buckeye Bullet sittin.  The same problem that plagued 'em last year: motor windings burned out.  The motor is in SLC being repaired; should be back Wednesday.


I am surprised they don't have the motor out of the Fusion Fuel cell car as a spare.   The Ford was earlier stripped of important stuff and "donated" to Jack Roush Museum.  Since part of the technology exchange with Ford and OSU included the OSU proprioritory motor design, I would think Ford would have presented it to them.  If they had problems last year with motor, it sure would pay to have a spare, and only two exist in the world. (zakly like that one)
I do wish them the very best.  The car is capable of going really fast.

Okey-dokey.  We had a meeting and also learned some stuff about who's ready to run and who isn't. 

First of all, we had a drivers meeting.  Late -- not before runs, but eventually.  We got some rules about who can be moving during a run and what crews were allowed to move andf so on.  All's fine there -- and we'll be ready to keep thins running for the competitors as soon as they're ready to go.
Runs are to start about 8AM and go 'til the light is too low.  Sun goes behind the mountains about 7.15, and FIA needs a two-hour window, FIM a 1-hour.  Make your own schedules, the racers were told.

Next -- let's see.  Bullet won't run 'til Wednesday -- hurt motor.  Bub is ready to run right now if the wind is okay.  Missile will make a low-speed run to seat the rings and stuff -- probably later today.  Snowmobile is ready to run today -- will when they say they want to go.  Speed Demon V-8 is dead -- hurt a head. So will put in the 4-cylinder motor, but probably won't run 'til tomorrow.  The jet bike isn't here yet.

I'll retry posting more photos.

A little moisture problem in the Speed Demon's 299" v8 motor (hurt one of the cylinder heads; they're gonna go back to the 4-cylinder motor now.)

Wendover Will when I went for the fly killer stuff (partly successful.)

Flies dying in the flypaper roll.  Die, flies, die!!!

Drivers/crew/spectators meeting.  SSS should be posting about that.

Let's see if these'll load.  Photos from the snomo pit.  They ran a knurled drive for the main belt on the 210++ run at an airport last winter, but built a grovved-drive hub for the Salt.  The grooved one didn't work so they're changing back to the knurled unit. 
The engine drives a variable-pitch hub/clutch to the drive -- the hub/clutch broke, too.

They hope to be back togeting for first thing in the morning -- maybe yet tonight.  They're looking at the other teams and explaining, in their French-accented English, that they're here to learn from the other teams.

The Missile is still running -- just upped the idle to about 1000 rpm.

Here's a link for you.  The G-Force snomo team fellow, Richard Hotte, just came over to ask about putting his site's forum and this one on to each other.  I'm going to hope I got through his Quebec aceent okay.

Chris Carr is going to ride down the length of the track and check wind speeds right now, while I type.  Nice of me to let him goof off, hey?

Anyway, FIM Charlie was just here for a couple of minutes of chat.  Told me that FIM used to have a 1-hour turnaround window, but changed it to two hours quite a while back -- before he joined them (Don't know when that was), the change being a recognition of how advanced the bikes (read: streamliners) have become.  He kinda wondered out loud why FIA is still with the one-hour turn.  I suppose we could assume they don't want to change the record book to reflect the change -- but then, remember that assume can be interpeted in your own way.

Here's theword at 5PM Bonneville time:

Bub is heading out of the pit to the freeway end of the track to make a run.  Chris is walking the start line.

Other good news -- I see them packing the chute in the Missile.

Speaking of chutes -- have we ever had a good, thorough, and knowledgeable discussion of parachutes and the theory behind their use on land speed vehicles?  Sometime soon, hey?
