FIM Record Return Runs

FIM Record Turnaround Times should be amended to provide additional time in the case of a return record run being ready to go within the allotted time and through no fault of their own the course or timing traps are not ready. Sam Wheelers return record run was almost delayed by an entrant running on the course when not authorized. Several years ago I was helping Jim True with a FIA return record run when this happened. The FIA official ruled at that time that he could complete his record run even though he was over the allotted hour. Perhaps a drop-dead limit should be set say 30 or 45 minutes after the allotted time.

Mike,
This is a valid point and it has been brought up about several "Potential" problems for making a return run.
I would agree with that somthing should be done, like if you are going to make your return run that no vehicles be allowed to run within 30 minutes of your time limit. Or something along those lines

Here is another part of the equation.
Dennis had 3 courses lay out. we only used one due to circumstances. Next year there will be three courses. One run watcha brung, one short course, and one long course.
The amount of long course vehicles at the meet was only 7-8 people. So shutting down the long course for a FIM attempt should not cause any problems because the majority of the bikes there were short course 95% of them were. THey will still continue to run and will not effect your returns. This year we ALL had to use one course which wont be an issue for 2005.

You are mistakened about the availability of the courses and there is no guarantee that 2005 will be any different. The long course and the short course were on the same measured mile. Only the start point was different. With proper scheduling of the entrants no delay should occur. The run what you brung course was not available under any circumstance because it was covered with water. The time frame required by FIM and FIA would require all previous records be retired if you changed the operating circumstances. The FIA person that gave a time extention to an entrant would have been over ruled when the documentation was presented for approval.
