I'm going to Kenz ans Leslie's tomorrow to take Ron the oil sample from the the Lakester. That BG oil 0/30 and all of BG's additives are great products. Thanks for a great week at the salt!

We were there with the Danny Boy at the July tune-up meet. Rick built some new body pieces to put the guy on top. He also built a new tail section for the bicycle guy (I think it was John Howard) could set a record with a peddle bike. Great fun all.
The Dutch bike guy (I think his name was Romplemeyer or something like that) had a cable with a release on the handlebars of the bike. Rick towed him to speed and then the guy supposedly released the cable and pedaled to maintain the speed. He had a window in the box fairing so he could see ahead. Something went wrong, the guy went down. He ended up in the hospital and sued Vesco. A messy deal. It doesn't seem like it was the 444 car however but an Indy car that Don had sitting around his shop that they put the box faring on. They had a bike frame and rollers under the rear tire to practice in the pits and warm up before runs and I remember how hard that apparatus got used. I think Rick would be happy to forget that whole fiasco. |

I recently acquired some old postcards with Bonneville topics. This is an example of some of them. I wonder if anyone else has any of these? Sorry about the poor quality of the picture as I got a lot of glare when I tried to take the shot. A friend of mine is a postcard dealer and he locates these for me. A couple of the cards have small packets of salt attached to them. I thought they were interesting.

Wester, the guys name was Fred Rompellberg. But he came later. The Strasburgs modified a big block Chevrolet powered car for him. This was in the early 90's. The Vesco deal was quite a bit earlier I believe.

The run with the Vesco streamliner was with John Howard, here is a scan of the record in the Guiness Sports record book of 1987-88  I was not there, but was there with Freud when we saw the Lightning man display, really wild stuff. The guy theorized that he could use ball lightning to contain a fusion reaction, or that is what my memory tells me..... Matt Guzzetta |

Would the lightening guy have been Nicola Tesla? I believe I read in his biography that he did ball lightening experiments in the area.

Lightning man was trying to replicate the work of Tesla in the area of ball lightning. He said that the problem was getting the frequency high enough with the large amount of amperage need to make the ball lightning. I went there with Don Vesco and we tried to help him with the switching at high frequency. He was using the tips of a large circular saw blade to make the switching, but the blades would come apart at over 7,000 or so RPM. We couldn't help him, it might be possible to make some high amperage, high frequency today with some monster solid state device, who knows. We did see some wild stuff that night. Maybe this 1954 shot isn't too old. SCTA did the timing at Colton, CA. at that time on the drag strip.
The car, #58, was owned by Bert Leithold of Riverside and used a flathead Ford 6. Later it used a GMC and ran at Bonneville in 1955.
It held records for years at Colton, Pomona and Riverside.
Then it unfortunately fell under the ownership of Stan Beck and held a street roadster record at the mecca of speed, unless it is wet,
B'ville.
The foto is from a personnel file in the records division of the Riverside County Sheriff's Office.

You may even have been correct.
Was it legal for Al to race w/o a drivers license?
Looks like a single roll bar was acceptable.
