I saved the back half pic of Jack's car for my new screen background. I also saved your elegant verse about the lure of Bonneville. I will use that someday, some where with your permission.

Jack Lufkin's Sports Racing car killed the class. It's best record was 291.783 MPH (AA/SR) in 1973 with Jerry Spotts driving. On the return of the record run, Spotts hit a 50 gallon barrel when he lost the chute and couldn't get stopped. If I'm wrong about the circumstances I am certain someone will call me on it. I do know the car was destroyed and never ran again. As early as 1967 it held the record in E class at 215.569 and held other records at 233.926 in D, 237.154 in C, 237.411 in B and 262.297 in A.

In the bottom shot, u can read his name on the helmet.

I was a member of the crew that year of the return run but i can't remember if that was the same year that the chute ripped a panel or not.  i do remember being on the way down course & seeing it go up in the air and roll/slide.  that was one scary incident & the 1st i witnessed.

you're right the car never ran again. 

On another note.  A year or so later I was, with Jack Stratton, trying to run a Pinto Pangra from Huntington Ford out of Arcadia & Ak Millers Garage. It had a 2 litre 4 banger with a turbo and a bosch mechanical fuel injection system that was put together by Bill Edwards/ Jack / Jerry Fairchild.

Never did get to go too fast with that.  Anyone have any photos of it?

i'm not sure that i have ever seen a 50-gallon, 55-gallon or any barrel ever out near the course.

here's how it happened:

i just finished making a pass in the ranchero and were towing it back when we heard over the radio that car number 646 was on the starting line.

so, we stopped our tow back to the pits to watch spottsie drive by.

the car was straight when jerry hit the chute.

that' when it all went bad.

a panel ripped out and turned the car over.

i jumped out of the back of the push truck, unhitched the ranchero, and we drove straight out to the car.

jack and members of his crew were arriving at the very same second.

we flipped over the car and jerry popped out so fast i'm surprised he didn't get hurt doing that.

i sustained the only injuring in the crash: a badly cut palm from sheet metal that sure made it tough shifting the racecar for the rest of the week.

btw: jerry was fine and the car was far from destroyed as it was a really gentle rollover.

when i retrieve the rest of my things from pebble beach i will submit some pics that i took at the crash site, which reveal that the car is practically intact.  you can also see that, except for the damage to the tops of the fender pods from the rollover, there is no damage from hitting anything on the course.

i was never really sure why jack never rebuilt the car.  maybe the writing was on the wall for the longevity of the sports racing category.

i do know that it was the last time that jerry ever drove at speed.

he always scared me when he drove!  a real bag of worms who never should have been in the car: "if anything happens greg my wallet is in the glove compartment of the push truck.  my mother's phone number is tucked in with my drivers license.  call her and tell her what happened."

that fact that i didn't have to make that call to his mother on that day is due to the safety of that car!

hi steve: welcome to the party!

thanks for pointing that out: it was not on a record run.  it was, indeed, a qualifying attempt.

that was in the days when you qualified on one day and ran two-ways for the record on the following day.

i'd have to say that it the injectors and intake from jack lufkin's sports racer.

but then jack has run ak miller's garage for over 50-years.  so, it is an easy mistake.

The 131 streamliner was last owned by Muffler Tom and he put a straight Buick in it. Never ran well.

RockOlogy...thanks for yanking me back to reality. So I was way wrong about Jacks car. I'm happy u were there to assist in Jerry's rescue.

When I took another look at Nolans car I can see the number and Autopower in the side. You is the winner. Collect your prize at the next meeting.

But I do know for certain that bike 83 did not quite make 300 MPH.

you should have seen the case that jack made for carrying the injection pump when it wasn't in the car.

i can't remember what year it was, but jack went back home to gloucester, massholechusettes and took the pump with him.

even though it was in the days before terrorism being a daily occurrence here in the good-ol' usa, he said it created quite a stir when he carried it on board.

jack treated that pump like it was gold!

and it certainly was the "magic" in that car.

In spite of a crew of teenager misfits, Vesco was still able to establish records.

The man in white clothes was Earl Flanders, AMA referee.

This was the beginning of the return run on a record attempt.  September , 1974

Murray Hoffman, designated pusher. Mike Devlin in charge of strapping him in.
