AJR192, you are clairvoyant. CORRECT ALSO.
You probably searched all the years to find out when there was a full moon during Speed Week.
Bill Eppridge shot it at the same time as I did and it was in SPorts Illustrated.

Tom was to be the last run of the day and he broke the drive train. So they just pushed off to the side and waited for the tow rig.

I remember that year very well. I always look at when full moon is going to be before leaving for B-ville. I suppose if I were smart enough I could figure when the next one will be.

This year full moon is August 6th, 8:45 PM Mountain Daylight time.
There would be rooms available for that night so go a few days early and enjoy the foto op.

Seems like I am following Sparky's foot steps growing out of the airplanes into race cars = at our house now it's: Honey, I got rid of them fly toys now I need to get me one of them salt speed racers From my experience - Flaps on the 140 and 170 were a "nice accessory" and most often useless, unless you wanted to take off on a snow covered runway, accelerating to speed , then use the manual lever to set flaps and "pop" it out of the snow. Looking forward to a lot more historic photos

Talk about POP, I have a lot of time in a 185 towing gliders--I loved those big ole Barn Doors---man those things could almost make you think you were superman , but then landing in a good crosswind removed all of those thoughs !!!!!

While we wait for the penalty strokes, it has been cold around here so I got a little scanning done myself. Who wants to see Competition Coupes? Everyone, that's good the last 2 are from 2 different years, 79 and 80 are my guesses

Here's a few more, the Bug Eye set the record in 79, sponsored by the Army Reserve, they came back in 80 with it looking better, and lost the record to Ben Jordan's Abarth Zagato by about 22 MPH. Several funny stories associated with that, but must be told in person. And a lakester with a wild set up, minor posting problem, I guess the lakester is first

Stainless, the two photos of the Sorenson-West cars are 80's vintage. After racing a variety of salt cars since 1951, that Firebird was the car that finally put Don West into the 2 Club in 1988 with a speed of 247.467. Don and his son Marty pulled the car out and freshened it up when the Classic category was instigated. Marty ran a record average 260.299 in 2002 and I believe his record still stands. Marty was the starter for several of the first World of Speed events.
The bottom photo is likely the Camaro that Don put upside down at over 240 mph in the early 80's.
