John N....good question regarding an alky fire.

Years ago on Herda's last run the only way that two fellows, on dirt bikes who were in the shutoff area,

had any idea the car was on fire was the heat waves above the car.

When they got to the car the fire had done its ultimate damage.

Yes correct Hcarte, Ack Attack sheared off the main shaft on the front motor. They are putting in another motor as we speak.. They also took the rear doors off the liner,, Mike and Rocky felt this was causing the bike to handle poorly. The doors were off on the last pass for Ack, so now just dealing with front motor.

The picture of Burklands car with salt spray going by verifies the reports that when he was going by the pits at speed the streamliner was rocking back and forth and stopped very close the they dyke.

JonAmo

The Vincent streamliner twisted both main shafts in 1997 and twisted the rear engine main shaft in 2002.  I increased the crank main shafts to 1 and 1/2 inches in 2004.  Coupling two engines together is a major challenge.

what I heard long ago was that Herda was breathing pure oxygen and that is what killed him.

Methanol doesn't burn very hot (too hot for the driver!) and takes a while to ignite other material that will send off smoke. The methanol fire itself is invisible in the sun and only gives off a low blue flame even in the dark.

Oh yeah, Burkland with the front wheels off the ground over a hundred. Whoo Hoo!

Is Leo Hess going to run again?

When the fire burned through the air line it destroyed his lungs.

I don't know if Leo will run again.  Ohio State says they've got the motor returning tomorrow afternoon and hope to run Friday.

Sam & RtR, if you guys keep up this style of instant reporting during World Finals, I either have to stay at home on the computer or buy a lap top so I can follow the action while being in the pits. Fantastic job!

Skid marks and a very hot brake rotor from the Burkland run.
