Two Piece Rear Sprockets

I am in the process of building a motorcycle powered streamliner that will mainly run at Maxton in 09 with hopes of running at Bonneville also. This is a four wheel version using a ZX10R engine. I will be running in the I/GS class. My question is, has anyone used a two piece rear sprocket. Since my rear axle is a solid straight axle with press on wheel hubs I don't want to have to press the hubs off each time I make a gear change or for replacing worn sprockets. Any info on this will be a great help. The car weight will be around 1000lb to 1200lb.   Thanks .... Jerry

Yes, we ran split sprockets for almost 10 years.  The major issue we had was ensuring alignment and spacing at the split.  We tried precision drilled holes, fixtured locating, but when you are working with a 26 tooth sprocket with a 1/16 saw split there were still a few issues now and then.  Fastest we went on splits was 221 with the one liter.  We redesigned the center carrier and the removable axles and changed to a regular sprocket.  Yes it is more work to change but we usually only do that when we change engines.  If you are going to WOS, drop by and look at it.

Check with Sprocket Specialists in Oreville.  (800) 782-8200.  I just got a pair of split sprockets custom made to order.  They have at least two types of splits.  Any size and any chain type. 

When I ran micro sprint dirt cars we used split sprockets and never had any problems.

Thanks guys for the info. Glad to see Stainless has had some luck running two piece sprockets. LitteLiner, I too have ran two piece sprockets on micro sprints with no issues but our speeds were only in the 100mph range. I hope to see my liner running in the 200mph range at Maxton.  Until I get a better handle on my gearing I think I will call Sprocket Specialist and see what they have in a two piece. After running the car for a while, and start building more HP I will probably go to a one piece sprocket. Also, did you guys run a steel or aluminum sprocket. Thanks again for the help!

Both for us, can't remember if one was better than the other, precision mounting and preventing movement is the key.  We always cut our own, looked into very fine cuts, but 20 years ago they were outside our budget....
