Things not to bring if you're superstitious:
« on: July 30, 2008, 04:08:02 PM »
Things not to bring if your superstitious:
Bananas
peanuts
leave tags on new tires
anything else?

Because I need an explanation on the above I've stripped it out of another thread to inquire....
So, help me out what is taboo about the above?
And just for fun, what are your racing superstitions and why?

You must wear white and anything green is unlucky.

BTW: everyone is invited to stop by my pit and have some peanuts next to my green car.

So is it the green and the peanuts or is it just you that's unlucky?

I have so much to learn about this salt racing stuff!

Well, my old college room mate years ago told me some of their superstitions in NYC:

Touching the third rail is unlucky

Hitting a cop is unlucky

Speaking Italian in an Irish neighborhood is unlucky

Willie's right.  Green on a bike is a guarantee you'll crash.  I know from experience.  I'm a life long Norton enthusiast.  Last year artin gave me a beautiful Norton T-shirt.  Unfortunately its green.  I've never worn it and never will.  Maybe its all BS but why take the chance?

When Roger Penske was asked why he had green trim on his Miller High Life sponsered Indy cars his answer was "...green is the color of money..."

I don't know what the peanuts are all about but last year right after my tire blow and spin someone came by our pit and brought up the peanut thing and sure enough I had a bag of peanuts in the truck. Bananas are a boat superstition, but why take the chance.
P.S We smudge the shop every 6-8 weeks and it works. will also smudge the car, truck and trailer friday before we leave.

So, if you are camping, does one need to bring salt?

ahhh, ok! Now I remember Todd telling me about the green thing in regards to bikes! Got it!

Shoot, I was planning to pack some green clothes. Does mint green & kahkie green count or is it just the basic green? I'd hate to get kicked out of someone's pit for wearing green!  :-o

So now, tell me about the peanuts and what is this act of smudging? I'm so lost! lol

I think a lot of the "green" and "peanuts" superstition came from an old movie about racing. I can't remember which movie it was but it was in black & white.

BTW, if Charles Schultz had walked into your pits would that be "unlucky"?

I had a young Indian guy (PC...Native American) working for me awhile back that started smudging the shop by burning white sage (not regular sage)to kindly ask that any unwanted spirits to leave. He would start at the front door with the sage (chanting) and work his way around the whole shop than he would smudge all of us. The first time he did it was when we were going through a slow period. Later that day and week after he smudged we got swamped with work. So now whenever we get slow, we smudge (less the chanting) and we always get busy immediately.

I guess that you have to add $50.00 dollar bills also. Peanuts  in the shell are bad ju ju in the pits. Hope fully the color green only applies to the cars. I wore pale green last year and nothing bad happened so perhaps it is a particular shade that is unlucky.
So if any of you have any unlucky $50.00 bills on you feel free to leave them at our pits, :-D
