how much ballast
« on: July 06, 2008, 04:12:09 PM »
for my ridged frame turbo KZ i want to add some ballast to the frame. But how much ballast is a lot of ballast. 20#s 200#s somewhere in between those numbers i am sure is a right one but I don't know which end it is more likely to be at. any suggestions

Jack Costella told me "Add weight until it slows down. then remove weight."

Greg,

I ran 220+ on the 259 run in 05, I am now only running the 88 pounds in the swing arm..

The faster bikes at Bonneville run less than 100 pounds however they have suspension and lots of experiance on the salt to be able to modulate the throttle before they encounter large amounts of wheel spin..YMMV

See you there..

Rich,
I thought Jack's mantra was "add gear till it slows down, then add power"

Jack has a lot of sayings and some might be to throw us off, but I pay attention to all of them.

Seems like the ballast thing might also take into account the riders weight and the front/rear weights.  How much do you guys weigh or how much weight is on the rear tire with you and the ballast on the bike and then how fast are you going in that configuration, how much HP are you making and are you happy??

c ya,

Sum

I'm 270# riding a 350# bike with an 8 ' wheel base. I was just trying to figure how i will be setting up ballast this year as last year i did a lot of wheel spinning. thing is a have to set it up different if i am looking at adjustable ballast between say 20-100 lbs as opposed to 75-180 lbs. i think john has gotten me in the ballpark of what I want to know though.
Thanks
Greg

Sum nailed it. Both of jacks sayings make sense to me.
