Turbo Yamaha R1
« on: October 26, 2017, 09:34:19 AM »
My wife hates this bike. She concerned that 251 mph is way too fast but agreed to let me build a slower bike. The new bike is going to cost about $20K so she wants this one sold.
I modified this 2001 Yamaha R1 (20 valve) to race on the Bonneville Salt Flats starting in 2014. I disassembled the bike completely and had the frame inspected for straightness and wheels magnafluxed. The front wheel had a blemish so I replaced it.
I raced this year on the salt (2017) and the bike passed tech inspection and ran Ok. The mid range throttle was off because I didn't have any richer needles with me (Utah is much higher and hotter than I expected). The idle and topend was good. The only known problem is the jetting. I have a complete set of jets and it's currently jetted for Eugene, Oregon.

The majority of parts and tech support came from Hurricane Performance (HP) in Prescott, Ontario. HP builds 700hp to 800hp snowmobiles based on the R1 engine. HP was recommended by CP Carillo and proved to be a real asset during this project.
The turbocharger is a Garrett with a TiAL stainless steel turbine case, TiAL BOV and wastegate. The pistons and h-beam conrods were made by CP Carillo. The cam timing was changed from 105 degrees (factory) to 114 degrees for the turbo. The pistons, head bolts, conrods and valves are setup for 35 lbs of boost.

The engine can be seen running at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mGSKtMo_EE
The exhaust wrap is drying in the video and I forgot to turn on the scavenge pump, so it's smoking a little bit in the video.
