Andy Green - 714.144 mph
« on: September 25, 2017, 07:59:45 AM »
It was twenty years ago today ... Andy Green set his first record on the Black Rock desert.

John Cobb held the outright land speed record for almost 24 years (1939-1963).  I wouldn't bet against Andy overtaking that.

For those into anniversaries, it's also 93 years since Captain Malcolm Campbell set his first outright record (146.163 mph on Pendine Sands in the UK).

So his next big anniversary as such will be next month.
Am I right in thinking Kitty O'Neil still holds the outright land speed record for a woman?

Yep.  We are approaching twenty years since the current record was set.

With the caveat that there is no officially-recognised "record for a woman", yes to that as well.  At least Kitty O'Neil's speed was independently timed and the average of two runs in opposite directions.

[1 km in 4.363 seconds = 512.706 mph]

Thank you TD
I had heard ( or read) that was the case for Kitty, but yes of course there is no differentiation between male and female for a record.

Cheers
John

Andy Green is my hero!
I can't find the tools to locate cheap insurance. I hope someone will help me any time soon. Many men try their way. But it all ends some day.

There should be an outright land speed record for 'motorcycles' (vehicles with less than four wheels) but this would be held by Craig Breedlove at 526 mph and change set in '64. It will depend upon whether either team submitted the paperwork to the AMA/FIM (with sufficient Francs in those days).

Most agree that both average speeds (Kitty & Craig) were correctly recorded over a surveyed distance.
