Ray - close, but here's a later version of the SD story:

They're pulling the heads of the D motor and installing the C in the car.  They'll run the C motor from the 1 1/2 and through the lights, the idea being to get some numbers out of the bigger motor without running it the extra mile and a half under full power.  Ron says they're hoping for 425++ without hurting the motor.  They'll decide about the D once Duttweiler sees what's going on inside.

Hmmm...every time one of us talks to 'em, the info seems to change.

Here's some stuff I know to be accurate:

The 299 motor ended up with a hole in its head...well, one of 'em.  Ron Main told me that he thinks an injector failed and caused a hot spot, which burned thru the head and, in the following photo, the head gasket.

When the hole erupted in the head and gasket, the cylinder pressure ended up in the water tank.  It ballooned and broke several welds.  The ballooning isn't real visible in the photo, but bleeve me, it's there...especially where the caps bolt on.

And for Glen, there's a shot of the tire that had been laid out in preparation for the return run if needed.

Rice Vigeant is about to run, going from the mountain to the highway -- 2 mile to about the ten.  The Aussie bikes are heading to their chosen starting area.  R/V is ready, course is now clear.

Installing steering wheel, closing canopy.  (post)

Engine is running.  Car is moving on the truck.  Car is off the truck and under way.

Entry speed   181   kilo  182.426  mile  182.379

Car is on course and slowing, engine is off.

Ah, now I understand about the two records -- whoever ran the fastest gets to choose if he wants the kilo or the mile record.  Brothers -- how they sort these things out, hey?

Jamie Williams -- bike 969 - is on the course now.  By the four mile, accelerating.

Entry speed - 206.8   kilo speed   206.6   mile 206.5

That'll be good enough for a new record.  We'll get the numbers/eaverages for you in a little while.

Next is to run Jim Knapp.  He's ready - still in the trailer in the pits.  Cook is on the way here to get him primed and ready to run.

Knapp's car is out of the trailer and getting set up to run.  He'll start from the 1/2 mile.  He will not run 'til the three bikes (see below) have made their runs.  They won't get down to the half-mile where he is staging.

Kim will ride first on the 1379 bike, followed by Greg Watters #379,  and Al Lamb on B1979 will be ready to run./  They'll run in about ten minutes, running from the mountain towards the freeway.

Here's some Speed Demon stuff:

Terry and Mike Nish have called Chapman (don't know a first name) that used to run a race shop in SLC.  The hurt head for the D motor is on the way to Chapman who'll weld it up and re-machine the O-ring in it this weekend and get it back to the salt by Monday morning.  The SD crew will reassemble the engine and hope to have the car running again by noon Monday.

Thanks to the Nish crew for helping out - per Ron Main and the rest of the SD crew.

In other notes about the Speed Demon:  Betty just delivered Mexican food to all of the workers on the course - as well as the SD crew, of course.  I got three enchiladas, Nancy the posole.  Thanks, Betty Howard -- George's sister.

The bikes will run one - two - three, and then Jim Knapp will run from highway to the mountain.  Five to ten minutes 'til that series of runs starts.

Course is clear and locked down.  Kim Krebs is starting the bike - #B1379.  Heading this way.  Wind is about 5-8 tailwind for her right now.  Temps in the low 70s  - a fine day to be on the salt.  Of course, though when you think about it -- dang near any day is a good day if you're on the salt.  Sorry you're not all out here -- but Nancy and I will do what we can to let you know what we're seeing and hearing.

Kim is on course at the eight mile.  Post.

Kim is slowing - course watchers will move and look for parts on the course.  No speeds -- didn't get to the lights.

A quick sweep of the course.  Kim's bike will be moved to the side of the course and put on a side stand, and Kim will get in the truck - for safety, so she's not with the bike as Greg goes by.  He's standing by and waiting for the sweep to be completed.

Kim reports the motor "popped" and lost power.  Engine still runs, and no oil coming from it.  As I remember, her bike is the 750 turbo scooter.  Fire has checked over the bike, found no issues, and is returning to post near the tower to await the next run.

Waiting for the tower to okay Greg's run.  Course is clear.  Send the #379 bike.  He's on the bike, the engine is running.  He's under way.

Moving well at the nine mile, on course at the eight, approaching the timed stretch.  Post.

Entry 256   kilo  257.5   mile  257.2

Course watcher reports he saw something come off the bike - workers will do a real fast sweep so Al can run.  Greg still rolling - at the three.

Does it qualify?  He was running on a 232 record.  I guess that's a qualifier :-D

Bike is still moving - past the three mile down near us here in the pits.  Has cleared the course and stopped on the side so Al can run.

Al Lamb, bike 1979, is clear to make his run, starting the engine now.

Moving on his own, under way per Drew Gatewood.  On course through the nine.   On course at the eight.  Cook:  Keep an eye on him (potential issues?).

In sight of the timing stand.

Entry speed 236.5     kilo 241. 500     mile  241.734

Through the four mile and slowing, on track, per Dan Warner.  Looking good and slowing.

Jim Knapp's Barnyard Bearcat is waiting on the track - ready to launch as soon as the bikes pass by him and get to the pits.  His push truck is off the course.  Likely he'll run within five minutes - maybe ten, depending on those bikes going past him.  I didn't think to ask what engine he's got in the car -- it's marked at an F/GS.  Anybody know?

Conversation overheard on the FM:

"This is Rice/Vigeant pit.  We're done running for the day."

Cook:  "What?  We've got 4 or five hours left today!"

R/V:  "Yeah, but we've got four or five days left in the meet."

Cook:  "(mumble, grumble. . .)"

Lamb is back in the pit.  Greg Watters will do his turnaround service right where he is, about the two mile on the side of the track, and run his return run from there.

Thanks, Joe.  I do remember hearing something like that.
Bearcat is in position to run with push truck in place to get him moving.

Junior is out on the track doing a bit of track maintenance, and should be off the course in three minutes, he reports.

One of the course stewards did a sweep farther up the course and found what he reports to be a drain plug.  But -- it "appears" to have been out there fore a while.  Anybody lose oil pressure in a dramatic fashion during the previous meets?

Knapp is running on a 250 mph or so record.
