Great numbers with a "D" motor. You guys give a "D" motor guy some hope. Now if I can just talk Kennie into building me a "D" motor...

You think budget has anything to do with the ability to drive a race car, great weather conditions that have allowed the vehicle to race, proper planning and a great crew. Don Vesco & Tom Burkland probably would have just has many runs over 400. Would you call their attempts on a large budget? Don's unfortunate death in early 2000's stopped for more 400 mph attempts, Tom Burkland and his fabulous crew worked hard for their numbers and track conditions (those favorable for their likeing) prevented them from running more and Gene's death probably took a major toll on the family and crew. Those run that were accomplished didn't have anything to do with money. IF al Teague didn't retire from racing the car had plenty of 400 mph runs under its tires past and very possible future, so it's not the money because the last three didn't ahve any and most trips down the salt were 400+.

Did anyone hear what broke on the "C" motor?

BTW I saw the last seconds of a Goodyear commercial for a Speed Demon tire. I think Ron should sue.  evil

agree with JonAmo, and frustrated by everyone who has to follow up every good record with "all it takes is money" - I see plenty of guys pouring tons of money into a project going nowhere, and plenty of low buck guys setting records.

A friend of mine ran one of the lowest buck cars I know of...  His turbochargers came from the junkyard, literally.  He holds the AA/BGALT record.  This car is far more interesting and "cool" than a high dollar effort that hasn't achieved anything (although some here think they should be faxed the record before their car even moves under its own power, gimme a break)

I love the Poteet and Main efforts, those are some of the nicest down-to-earth guys you can meet.  I highly suggest visiting with them if you haven't met them already.  Lots of money doesn't automatically mean you'll nail down a record.  Successful projects require time, talent, and resources, and it's the different combination of the three that makes the successful cars at Bonneville so interesting to see.

I used GH's car as an example that you can do well with low bucks just as much as the big dollar teams do.  He holds the AA/BGALT record, one that I am sure you guys will likely take in the near future.

I'm guessing you think the #97 car was a Buy it and Drive it deal, but that couldn't be further from the truth.  You'd be surprised at the corners we cut just to make it to the show this year!  It was going to show up in primer but Randy, the crew chief and painter, worked around the clock to make it look half decent (notice the paint color mismatch on the fenders and nose? ha).  We couldn't have made the 2012 event if we'd have run the high dollar EFI and datalogging similar to what you guys run.  I made that EFI system from radioshack and DigiKey parts on the kitchen table with my own hands *because I can*, same for the datalogging (it's even FARTHER out there!  totally home made).  there's maybe 5K in our ignition, EFI, and logging which includes suspension travel, wheel speed, GPS speed, all fluids temps and pressure, etc.  Price that out, it's nearly $40K in electronics if you're doing it with commercially available systems...

We farmed out the motor work because none of us have the assembly skills you and Troy have (LOVE following your build, been reading it for years now).  But, saving $35K on the electronics balanced that choice out.    (And NO, I would NOT recommend for most people here to try and home-make their own electronics when there are plenty of vendors out there who have already sorted out the bugs and pitfalls for you!!)

At bonneville, you do what you can with what you have.   Money doesn't guarantee a record, and being low budget doesn't rule you out of taking one either.

Also, B-ville was my vacation.  I don't have any hours left otherwise you'd see me there in October!!  So I know where you are coming from.  Don't let shiny paint and good fab work fool you, we struggle just like everyone else.

  $30,000 DOLLARS grin  thats 3 times more than our cost including install and welding manifold ''unpaid crew''

 Gary took the AA record from us set with a big hole in piston from a dropped valve.
 Twilight took our record set spining through the 3 mile with the chute out.

Th speed demon is awesome. Crew and owner included. I have a great deal of respect for all. But having motor tires and trans to spare as well as a paid crew to change and maintain not to mention prep are te reasons for the quantities of runs over 400.  All of which come down to budget. You have to have a car capable which is talent and experience but the spares and crew and best of everything is mjnkey plain and simple. I don't intend to deminish any accomplishments because that isn't te case.  Look at all te times the car has broke parts or motors etc. it's not like the car performs flawlessly over and over. Anyone with my budget would be going home after the first motor blew.

Speed Demon is so fast because Ron thought outside the box . Downforce , waste gate traction control , a manageable amount of power . George came because it went fast . The money didn't make it fast . It allowed them to keep replacing and improving things .
