1985 Mustang XF/BGC?
« on: November 20, 2011, 03:27:27 PM »
Is there any reason (other than safety stuff) that I can not run this 1985 Mustang with blown flathead as a XF/BGC, XF/BGALT and XF/BFALT? Starting to spend money and just want to make sure. Phil

No reason at all. I ran a Vega in X0/BGAlt. Guys run all kinds of cars. And you can use a Turbocharger if you want to. But not in XFV/GCoupe

I think we have a little more room under the hood with the Mustang. Probably because the car's a little larger. After looking at the previous pictures I'm going back outside and change the header exit to the side like the car pictured. Have to move the MSD box obviously.

Cool!

I'd sure like to hear some engine details.....

Nothing unusual, 3 5/15 x 4, blown. Only slightly different is the Ford pistons with Merc crank made possible with French 6 7/8 rods from So-Cal. Only went with this cause I had the pistons already. Phil

Ok. What are you doing for a blower, intake, etc.?

What's the plan for a bellhousing and tranny, if I can be nosy?

Holley 144 blower (B&M), I made the intake and drive. It's simply a two piece shell intake that makes a box type chamber feeding the intake ports. The bellhousing and trans are a Lakewood blowproof for a SBF that we use an adaptor from Speedway that would normally be used with a C4. I seperated the small adaptor coupling from the C4 flexplate and will adapt it to a billet neutral balance flywheel. Ford racing clutch, with T5 I purchased from Rick Byrnes that has had 5th gear removed and is modified to shift without a clutch. Hoping to set up car with a Winters quick change.

Sounds like you need to start a build thread! :-D

Sounds like a cool setup. Has the t-5 been modified to handle the extra torque- no concerns there?

I was told the trans was modified by Liberty and was used in Rick's turbo Mercury Mercur (sp). This was his drag race tranny with which he ran in the 10's.

Trans is a V8 T5 with 2.95:1 first gear.  Pro shifted, Liberty did rework and Daryl Hart, who used to work for Joe assembled the unit.  IF i remember correctly.  That was a lot of years ago.  (1988)
It was Ok at around 350 to 400 ft pounds.  The weak point of those boxes for me was 5th gear.  We did though wear the teeth razor thin.  Watch for time to rebuild.
I used the pro shifted box for drag racing testing but on the salt used a full syncro T5 with the same ratios.  I think it will be fine for the flat head project.

SO
who are you and where you at.....fill out your profile so everyone knows who you are.
Send me a PM
You have an interesting project and should have loads of fun.
I have always wanted to build a flat motor.........but not enough days in the week....
