I believe the Corvair engine/transaxle is set up to rotate in the opposite direction of lmost, if not all, other engines.

I've owned two - I guess I didn't pay that close of attention.  I know that if you pulled the starter drive from a Vega starter and used the Vega starter motor with a Corvair nose and gears , it was a cheaper replacement than a rebuilt Corvair starter.

Vega? Corvair?  Yeah, it's been a lot of years. 

I guess I don't recall the orientation of the starter with respect to the flywheel.

Many of the Honda motors rotate backwards.
Their newer stuff doesn't.
