Folks,

In trying to contribute what I can at the present, a search of the forum threads doesn't appear to yield a thread dedicated to artistic pictures from salt flats around the world. One of my favourite threads on another forum I frequent, with a different subject matter, allows folks to post their artistic photos and it's pretty popular. I believe that great photographs of salt flats and land speed racing can and will inspire future generations of racers and might go some way to preserving endangered salt flats and land speed racing on them.

Rules, well there aren't any. However, I'd like to suggest some guidelines.

  • The pictures should be somewhat artistic (in the beholder's eye) and in good taste...
  • The pictures should have been taken at a salt flat venue round the world
  • The picture can have been taken at any time in the past or present
  • You should preferably own the copyright to the image. If not, please credit the source
  • Please include any information that can identify the venue, date and subject if known
  • If you are going to link the pictures in from a separate site as opposed to uploading them, please try to ensure that the picture will be available there for the foreseeable future. There's nothing more annoying than a great picture that disappears because the link or end storage location vanished.
  • If you wish, identify the camera and settings or editing program with which the picture was shot or created

I look forward to seeing the pictures and associated stories from folks.

Regards,

Jim

Taken by Jim Kelsall at the Bonneville Sat Flats, UT during Speed Week 2011. This once fine belly tanker was floating around Wendover, the Bend-in-the-road campsite and the salt. The vehicle had controls in the cockpit. Shot 15th August 2011 with a Canon PowerShot G10 in colour enhance mode (red).

Hot headwear modelled by a cool customer, starter (name unknown), at the Bonneville Salt Flats during Speed Week 2011. We were waiting for the wind to die down on the Rookie / Orientation course #4. Shot 13th August 2011 by Jim Kelsall with a Canon PowerShot G10.

One more to get the thread started. Thanks Dynoroom for the thread support. I'm looking forward to seeing more pics and hoping the thread becomes self sustaining...

Leslie Porterfield (if I am not wholly mistaken) taking off on Long Course #1 during Speed Week 2011 at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Shot early in the morning 18th August 2011 by Jim Kelsall on a Canon PowerShot G10.

If the SCTA site lists runs in chronological order, the data for this run would be:

Vehicle    Engine    Body     Entry Name            Quarter    Mile1     Mile2     Mile3     Exit
1976B    2000CC    MPS-BF     Sir Speedy Honda    210.810    211.933    214.149    220.492    221.998

Not going to let a little summer storm keep a good racer down.... Phill Freudiger gets pushed off at Bonneville in '90. The course was better after the start.

I stole this from Shane Freudigers facebook page....  wink

Shot in 2010 with a Pentax 15mm lens on 400 speed film. It was overexposed by 2 stops.

Accidental art.

The Aussie Healey team, World of Speed, 2009.  Not so much salt in this one, but the glow of the sun through the yellow tarp didn't even hit me until I loaded it up on the computer.

Sometimes, that's how art works.

Cheapo little Nikon CoolPix.

It may not be artistic, but it's one of my favorites -- my 28 Mercury Torpedo Salon.
